Saturday's briefing: Newcastle fear over Isak and Hampton shows bottle
Birmingham were denied a win in their Championship opener by late penalty drama, and England keeper Hannah Hampton revealed she used some of football's dark arts to help the Lionesses to Euros glory.
Howe do you solve a problem like Isak?
Eddie Howe admitted Newcastle are 'not in a position' to refuse to sell Alexander Isak as speculation continues linking the striker with Liverpool.
Isak was absent as his side drew 2-2 with Espanyol in a pre-season friendly and is likely to remain so beyond the Magpies' Premier League opener.
Head coach Howe said: 'I'd want Alex to be playing today, I'd want him training tomorrow. But I don't see that changing before Aston Villa, the current situation we're in.'
Asked if the club could simply dig in their heels and refuse to sell, Howe said: 'I don't think it's that straightforward, otherwise we'd have done that a long time ago. I don't think we're in a position to do that currently.'
Liverpool boss Arne Slot earlier refused to be drawn on speculation around Isak, saying: 'As you know, from me and I think every manager works like this, you never talk about players that are not yours.
'I can talk about Hugo (Ekitike), who we have signed and who has done really well. Darwin (Nunez) might leave, indeed, but things are not signed so we need to wait a few days until that is completely done.'
Glasner awaits Euro fate
Glasner admitted Crystal Palace's demotion to the Conference League 'feels like we are punished, but being innocent' ahead of Monday's legal verdict to seal their European fate.
As the Eagles boss was speaking in London, Palace chairman Steve Parish and the club's lawyers were in session at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland for their appeal hearing, presenting arguments they hope will restore the FA Cup winners' place in UEFA's second-tier competition.
Parish told reporters outside the court in Lausanne on Friday that he was confident the club's case was a strong one and hoped they would be given a fair hearing.
'If you get punished when you feel innocent it's tough,' said Glasner.
'And it feels like this. If we play Conference League it feels like we are punished, but being innocent. On the other side, if we had ended the season on position seven and go straight into the Conference League, we all would have celebrated. So these are the two feelings we have.'

England goalkeeper Hampton has revealed how she threw the water bottle of Spanish rival Cata Coll into the stands during the European Championship final.
Coll had information about England's penalty takers written on the bottle, but Chelsea keeper Hampton slung it away during the shoot-out which the Lionesses won 3-1.
'The Spanish keeper had it on her bottle,' Hampton told talkSPORT.
'So I thought when she was going in goal I'll just pick it up and throw it into the English fans so she can't have it.
'She was so confused and I was trying to not burst out laughing!'
Coll laughed off the claim, tweeting in Spanish: 'Okay, okay, calm down. If only it were true…'

Eddie Howe hints at Alexander Isak exit with pointed remark to leave Liverpool on red alert
Newcastle striker Alexander Isak remains banished from training alongside his Magpies colleagues amid interest from Liverpool and Eddie Howe has now offered a fresh update Eddie Howe claims he's in the dark over Newcastle telling star striker Alexander Isak he must STAY at the club. The Swedish forward is at the heart of a major row involving his future amid interest from Liverpool. The Reds have already had a bid of over £100m turned down by the Premier League rivals. That has led to Isak submitting a request to leave the club before the end of the window, while he has yet to be reunited with his teammates. Newcastle have reportedly taken a hard-line stance over Isak's future. Reports earlier this week claimed that they told the 25-year-old that he won't be going anywhere this summer, a decision that has left him 'fuming'. In the meantime they have also told him that he will not play for the club until he understands his future lies in the North East. Asked about those claims, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe claimed that the non-sale stance was not led by him. Speaking after his side's pre-season friendly clash with Atletico Madrid, Howe said: "No, that's not something I'm aware of. I'm not party to all discussions, but I have no knowledge of that." Howe's latest comments come shortly after his previous update, where he claimed that he could not involve Isak while the transfer furore was ongoing. He said: "We've had discussions and it's clear at the moment we can't have him involved with the group. I don't know how long that will be for. It's clear I can't involve him with the team at the moment. 'He is training later than the rest of the squad. There have been discussions since the tour. I don't think disciplinary action has happened. "He is here, so of course he has a future at Newcastle. From our perspective, we would love to have him back with the team, but the situation has to be right for that to happen." Newcastle begin their latest Premier League campaign against Aston Villa next weekend, a game that Isak looks set to miss - a fact that is not lost on Howe. Asked if the striker could potentially play, Howe replied: "I want Alex to be playing today. I want him training tomorrow. We would love the player to be with us, let me make that absolutely clear. "There is no part of me that does not want that outcome. But I don't see the current situation changing before Aston Villa." Ryan Mason praises West Brom's fighting spirit after opening win over Blackburn
Isaac Price's 15th-minute goal gave Albion a deserved victory in Mason's first game in charge, with Aune Heggebo and Price twice going close. Blackburn's only serious threat came from Yuki Ohashi's saved shot but the hosts had to withstand late pressure before and after Darnell Furlong's red card in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage-time. Former Tottenham assistant coach Mason, 34 – who replaced Tony Mowbray in June – said: 'The reality of this league is you have to suffer at times. 'When you're in those moments – like we probably were in those last 10-15 minutes – defending our box and putting bodies on the line, that was the pleasing thing for me today. 'Most importantly, the feeling I got from the group was the willingness to work and fight for each other. 'We're going to need that going forward. I watched the Championship game last night (a 1-1 draw between Birmingham and Ipswich) and the early kick-off match today (Southampton 2-1 Wrexham) and in this league, the game is not finished until the final whistle goes. 'You have to fight in every moment and we showed a real desire to protect each other. That's certainly a foundation we're going to need.' Albion had the more chances, with attacking midfielder Price's 25-yard curling free-kick scooped over the crossbar by goalkeeper Balazs Toth. The former Everton youngster swept home a loose ball after Rovers failed to deal with Furlong's long throw-in. Heggebo wrestled fellow debutant Ryan Alebiosu off the ball to carve out the chance. Toth also denied Heggebo and Price either side of half-time, while Mason had no complaints about Furlong's late dismissal for two bookable offences, the latter a clash of heads. 'The nature of how it looked, I've got no arguments and I respect the referee's decision,' he said. Despite their late onslaught, Blackburn's only real threat was Ohashi's tight-angled shot fumbled away by Josh Griffiths. Ohashi appealed for a penalty after falling, following a tussle with Torbjorn Heggem – an appeal backed by Rovers' former Albion head coach Valerien Ismael. 'Yes, 100 per cent,' he said. 'If you saw what the referee saw from the middle of the pitch, it's a penalty. 'If you blow for a penalty, no one would have complained. I spoke to him (referee) briefly after the game and he had his view, but we can't change anything.' Not surprisingly, Mason's view differed: 'I need to see the replay to have an honest opinion but the ref was close and I respect his decision. 'I didn't expect him to blow for a penalty but maybe if it was the other way round, I might feel differently.' Ismael felt his team needed to become more ruthless in front of goal. 'It's just taking the wrong decision,' he added. 'Maybe taking a shot instead of passing and we need to show more desire to score, which was missing today.' The Frenchman also suggested there would be at least one more signing before the transfer window closes. He said any more incomings would depend on others leaving, with midfielder Lewis Travis attracting interest. 'I think there will be one at least and after that will depend on players going out,' he said.
