From UAE cap to TNPL dreams: Karthik Meiyappan's return home
Playing international cricket is a distant dream for many. Featuring in a World Cup is even rarer. Taking a hat-trick in one? Almost unthinkable. But Karthik Meiyappan has lived it.
At 22, the UAE leg-spinner etched his name into cricketing history with a hat-trick against Sri Lanka during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Geelong — barely 100 kilometres from the birthplace of his idol, Shane Warne.

Two-and-a-half years later, the former UAE international is back in Tamil Nadu, turning out for the Siechem Madurai Panthers, which signed him for Rs 9.2 lakh ahead of the 2025 Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).
'Playing the World Cup itself was a great experience. It's extremely hard to dream about a hat-trick. You can dream about a four-wicket haul or a good spell, but a hat-trick just happens by itself. I planned the over really well — the hat-trick was a byproduct of that,' recalled Karthik in a conversation with *Sportstar*.
Now 24, Karthik has already played 31 ODIs and 15 T20Is for the UAE. His family moved to the Emirates when he was seven, and cricket soon replaced the chessboard in his new home.
'I made the move to Dubai and chess wasn't a big thing over there — that's how I picked up cricket. And, when I was about 12 or 13, that's when I took it up professionally,' he said.
'I started off as a fast bowler, but I didn't have the build. My father was a leggie so I switched,' he added.

After moving between Abu Dhabi and Dubai in his early years, he joined the Desert Cubs Academy and was mentored by coach Aruna Bandaranayake — his gateway into age-group cricket and eventually the national team.
'Cricket over there is great. The quality of the players who come through over there — they play first-class and they move out and then they try to make a living,' he explained.
Net bowler stints
Karthik's rise also included important behind-the-scenes roles. He was a net bowler for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2020, and for Chennai Super Kings in 2021 when the IPL was moved to the UAE. In 2024, he joined Sunrisers Hyderabad as a net bowler — a stint that sharpened his game further.
'It was good to come back here and then get an opportunity with SRH right away. And it was a great franchise. Spending time with quality batters and bowling against them, you always keep getting better. That's the best way to get better as a bowler. And that was a lovely experience,' he said.
His time with SRH was disrupted by injury.
'I spent about two months there but it was cut halfway with a split webbing. I was out for about three weeks. But I'm grateful that they called me back into the set-up again.'
What made the experience more valuable was the access to world-class spin minds.
'It was lovely to pick [Muttiah] Muralitharan and [Daniel] Vettori's brains — to understand how they went about their game and try to get in their inputs and apply that into my game. I think that was a lovely experience.'
Return to Tamil Nadu
His decision to return to Tamil Nadu wasn't impulsive. The TNPL had been on his radar for years.
'I was playing Under-19s for UAE when I was about to move back to Chennai for my higher studies and cricket, but then I made my men's debut and there was an U-19 World Cup so I stayed back,' said Karthik.
'I wouldn't say it's a gamble. It's more of the belief that I have in my game. I am grateful that I am getting to play this tournament and obviously we know what kind of a platform this is for players to go through from Tamil Nadu and play in the IPL — so that's the main goal for me coming back here.'
This isn't his first taste of franchise cricket either. He's been part of the Desert Vipers and Sharjah Warriors in the ILT20, and the Vancouver Knights in the Global T20 Canada, where he shared dressing rooms with some of the format's top names.
'In ILT20 I was with Wanindu Hasaranga. He's someone that I can relate to because I feel like my bowling is kind of similar to him. He's been kind enough to give his inputs. And, Imran Tahir — I've had chats with him as well,' said the Panthers bowler.
He knows that leg-spinners have little margin for error in the TNPL.
'Being a leg-spinner in TNPL or GT20 or a bowler in general in T20 is pretty challenging because the circumference of the ground is pretty small and the crosswinds are pretty strong. Even the half-hits go for a six. If you can pull off a great spell over here, you've done really well. The batters are also really good players of spin.'
Red-ball reboot
While white-ball cricket shaped him, Karthik is now investing in red-ball skills in Tamil Nadu. He played three games in the TNCA first division for Alwarpet CC last year and is still adjusting to its demands.
'In Dubai, we predominantly play white-ball. Coming here, red-ball was a big challenge for me. But that's the purest form of the game, right? I feel like there's a lot of things that I have to learn and adjust,' he said.
'A lot of the players say that if you bowl really well with red, then white becomes extremely easy for you. But, the fact that I grew up with white and come into red — it's a completely different dimension for me.'

'I grew up playing with the Kookaburra as well. SG is something new and it feels completely different. I've been having a chat with a lot of the players who play with SG over here just to get an insight into what they do.'
Having served as a net bowler for multiple IPL teams and with international experience already under his belt, Karthik is betting on the TNPL and red-ball cricket to open doors in the Indian domestic circuit.
'I can only put my best foot forward and hope for the best. I'm 100% sure if I do put up a good performance in the season, it'll probably open the doors for me. All the experience will come into play at some point, and I'm looking forward to it,' he said.

Sourav Ganguly fires shots at Agarkar, BCCI for dropping Shreyas Iyer from India squad: 'Not a player to be left out'
Sourav Ganguly was one of the biggest advocates of Ajit Agarkar when he was the captain of Team India and even the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. Agarkar has dished out memorable performances in Ganguly's captaincy but none more special than his six-wicket haul in Adelaide to help India register a famous win against Australia in 2003. So fond was Ganguly of Agarkar that he didn't consider his KKR team to be at full strength till Agarkar was injured. This was more than a year after Agarkar played his last international match. Cut to 2025, there is nothing to suggest a crack in the Ganguly-Agarkar relationship but the former India captain surely did not shy away from pointing fingers at the Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee for leaving out Shreyas Iyer from India's Test squad for the England tour. Iyer, who was a part of India's middle-order the last time they toured England, drifted away from the Test side due to his struggles against the short-pitched deliveries. The right-hander, however, made a strong statement by scoring heavily in ODIs, returning as one of India's top run-scorers in both the World Cup in 20243 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. Iyer maintained his upward surge with a productive domestic season in all formats for Mumbai. In between, Iyer won the IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024 and then led Punjab Kings to their first IPL final in 11 years. The 30-year-old scored 604 runs in 17 matches in the IPL this year. His strike rate of 175 was by far the most by any batter in the top 10 of the Orange Cap list this year. Agarkar and his selection committee, however, did not pick Iyer in India's Test squad. Reports suggested that there wasn't a lot of discussion about Iyer as the selectors and the team management thought Iyer had a lot to work on when it comes to red-ball cricket. Ganguly said Iyer should have been in England simply because of his current form in all formats. 'He has been playing at his best in the last one year, and should have been in this team. Last one year has been fantastic for him. He isn't the player who got left out. He is now scoring under pressure, taking responsibility, playing the short ball well. Although Test cricket's different, I would have had him in this series to see what he can do," Ganguly told RevSportz. The former BCCI secretary saw Iyer closely when he was the Director of Cricket at the Delhi Capitals. Iyer is currently leading theMumbai Falcons in the Mumbai League 2025, where the team has already reached the finals of the tournament. In Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's absence, the heavy lifting of the middle-order batting will have to be done by new captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Rishabh Pant. There is a possibility that both Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair might get a look in the XI unless India decide to play a seam-bowling all-rounder in Shardul Thakur or Nitish Kumar Reddy. When asked if he is giving India a chance going into the series, Ganguly said, 'Yes, sure. We just need two things, batting well and [Jasprit] Bumrah remaining fit. We won in Australia, in Melbourne (2020-21), with a young batting line-up, having no [Virat] Kohli, no Rohit Sharma. So, I do not see why we cannot win.' The five-match Test series starts on June 20 at Leeds.

Soccer-Spain's Hermoso left out of Women's Euro 2025 squad
June 11 - Jenni Hermoso has been left out of the Spain squad for the Women's European Championship, with coach Montse Tome saying there was too much competition for places in her position. The 35-year-old forward played a key role in Spain's World Cup victory in 2023 and is the country's leading goalscorer but has featured less frequently for the side in recent months. Hermoso was also at the centre of a scandal involving former Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales, who was found guilty of sexual assault for kissing the player without her consent after Spain's World Cup win in Sydney. Rubiales said the kiss was consensual. Hermoso, who plays club football for Mexico's Tigres, was last called up to the Spain squad for friendlies against Italy and Canada in October and was part of the squad for last year's Paris Olympics. "I spoke with Jenni already in the beginning of the year, we had a conversation," Tome told reporters on Tuesday. "We've done with her what we've done with everyone else. We've valued her season in Tigres, we've spoken with the manager in different times, and we did what we had to do, to assess what we need from the players." Tome said Patri Guijarro, Maite Zubieta, Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmati, Vicky Lopez, Mariona Caldentey and Claudia Pina were all capable of playing in Hermoso's position. "It's difficult to make it to the final list of 23 players," she added. Spain are in Group B of the tournament in Germany, alongside Portugal, Belgium and Italy. They play Japan in a warm-up game on June 27 before taking on Portugal in their campaign opener on July 3.
