Dapsy chief slams abandoned MYKiosk stalls in Miri as ‘policy failure'
MIRI (June 9): Sarawak Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) chief Peter Hee has condemned the prolonged abandonment of the MYKiosk programme in Miri as a serious failure of public policy and a betrayal of the government's pledge to support low-income communities.
He criticised the Miri City Council for allowing the initiative to fall into neglect, with most of the kiosks left unused and deteriorating for over two years.
Launched in 2022 as a joint federal-local government initiative, the programme saw the construction of 10 kiosks across Miri, including locations in Luak Bay and Canada Hill.
However, many now stand rusted and overgrown with weeds, having never been activated or allocated for use.
'This is a textbook case of poor execution and resource mismanagement. It's a waste of taxpayers' money, and a serious blow to public trust in the government's promise to alleviate poverty,' he said in a statement yesterday.
Hee blamed the programme's failure on a lack of planning and implementation by local authorities, highlighting several key issues: kiosks built in remote or low-traffic areas; the absence of basic infrastructure such as electricity and running water; and no clear operational framework to support hawkers.
'Even those willing to use the kiosks are unable to operate under these conditions,' he added.
He also raised concerns over the lack of transparency surrounding the application and allocation process.
He said hawkers have repeatedly tried to apply for the kiosks but were met with vague or dismissive responses from city officials, including statements such as 'no decision has been made'.
'There's no access to forms, no guidelines, no timelines. Many traders feel ignored and excluded,' he said, noting that several night market hawkers who approached Dapsy had attempted to express interest but were given the runaround.
As a result, many of these traders have continued operating without permits, risking enforcement action while the government-built kiosks sit idle.
Calling the situation unacceptable, Hee urged the council to issue an immediate status update on the MYKiosk project, demanding full disclosure of each kiosk's condition, location, and readiness for use, as well as a concrete implementation timeline and the launch of an open, transparent application process.
He also proposed that priority be given to long-standing or licensed hawkers and that quarterly updates are made public to ensure accountability.
'To many struggling families, one functioning kiosk could mean food on the table. If our city council can't even get that right, they have no moral ground to talk about development.'
He said Dapsy Sarawak would continue to monitor the issue and would not hesitate to raise the matter in the Sarawak State Assembly or Parliament if no meaningful progress is made. DAPSY lead Miri City Council MyKiosk Peter Hee

Editor's Note: This is the reaction by DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) in response to UMNO Youth chief Datuk Muhamad Akmal Saleh over the latest flag blunder incident in Taman Bertam Perdana in Kepala Batas, Penang. Following the latest incident of yet another Jalur Gemilang being flown upside down after an earlier one involving SJKC Chung Hua in Port Dickson, the outspoken defender of race and religion has rallied his movement to 'march down' to mainland Penang to school the 'two Ah Peks (elderly uncles) on how to fly the Malaysian flag'. THE national level DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) strongly condemn the statement of UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh who urged the public to 'visit' a business premise located in Kepala Batas, Penang 'to right' the issue of the Jalur Gemilang being hung upside down. This action not only gives the impression that Dr Akmal wants to act like an authority but such an approach itself does not uphold the rule of law. National DAPSY therefore slams the hypocritical and double-standard attitude shown by Dr Akmal on the Jalur Gemilang issue. Has the Melaka state EXCO ever mobilised the public to 'visit' the Education Ministry (MOE) and the Terengganu PAS headquarters which have also committed mistakes of a similar nature? The answer is negative which clearly shows how hypocritical the current UMNO Youth chief is. Malaysia is a constitutional country based on the rule of law. Any action that violates the law or regulations – including blunders in the flying of the Jalur Gemilang – should be dealt with according to existing procedures and regulations, not through actions that involve intimidation or 'mob justice'. 'Political gimmick' Patriotic awareness cannot be fostered through threats but through consistent education. DAPSY insists that action should be taken against lawbreakers in a manner consistent with the law. However, the act of magnifying the issue and mobilising the public to 'teach the perpetrators a lesson' is just a political gimmick that does not benefit national unity. A representative of the people should play a role in uniting the people, not causing tension. DAPSY believes that errors in flying the national flag constitutes an action that must be punished according to the law. However, what is dangerous to the society today is the attitude of some politicians like Dr Akmal who chooses to politicise such issues for personal gain. Our country does not need 'moral police'; instead, Malaysia needs leaders who prioritise peace, harmony and the integrity of the law. On this note, National DAPSY calls on all parties, especially Dr Akmal who has repeatedly divided the multi-racial community, to stop the culture of confrontational politics which only creates hatred and division. Lee: MCC told to have clear evaluation system for contractors based on track record

MIRI (Aug 6): Contractors who complete their projects within the stipulated time frame or ahead of schedule deserve to be considered for future tenders, said Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. The Transport Minister stressed that the same consideration should not be extended to contractors whose performance is poor with delayed projects or quality that falls short of expectations. 'There have been cases where projects faced serious delays and cost overruns due to the failure of contractors. In such situations, we have had to appoint 'rescue contractors' to complete the works, which leads to further expenses,' he told reporters after visiting several project sites under Senadin constituency here today. Lee said it is important for Miri City Council (MCC) to have a clear evaluation system, whereby contractors with proven track records are prioritised for future tenders, while those with poor performance must improve their standards to remain competitive. He cited the example of the Sungai Dalam Road upgrading project, which was completed ahead of schedule. 'The RM300,000 project began on June 9, 2025 and was completed on July 28, compared to its scheduled completion date of Aug 8, this year. The original four-metre-wide road in this suburban area has now been widened, and two other roads in the vicinity have also been upgraded and completed early. 'During my visit, residents expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done by the contractor,' he said. 394 out of 426 MyKiosk units in Negri Sembilan taken up
SEREMBAN: A total of 394 out of 426 MyKiosk units in Negri Sembilan have been taken up, with each costing between RM15,000 and RM25,000 depending on the specifications, facilities and equipment, the State Legislative Assembly was told today. According to State Local Government Development, Housing and Transport Committee chairman J. Arul Kumar, Seremban had the highest number of units with 130, followed by Kuala Pilah (68), Tampin (58), Jempol (50), Rembau (47), Jelebu (38) and Port Dickson (35). "The remaining MyKiosk units have not been taken up due to unsuitable locations. That is why I have asked the relevant local authorities to relocate them to more appropriate areas so that traders can use them. "However, of the 394 units taken up, there are still some (traders) who have yet to start their businesses. So, we are asking the local authorities to take back those units and give them to those who want to run a business," he said. He said this in response to a question from Mohamad Hanifah Abu Baker (PN-Labu) regarding the number of MyKiosk units available in Negri Sembilan and the cost per unit. Responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Saiful Yazan Sulaiman (BN–Johol), who asked whether the state government intended to redesign the MyKiosk units to reflect state or local identity, Arul Kumar said the current design followed national standards. "We may consider the proposal in the future, possibly by incorporating elements of the local identity or making slight changes to reflect our own," he said.
