Body of missing Quebec hiker found off mountain trail, say U.S. authorities

The body of a Quebec hiker reported missing in northeastern New York state has been found, state authorities confirm.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) says in a statement the body of Leo Dufour, 22, was discovered over the weekend off Allen Mountain trail in Essex County.
Authorities say a hiking party reported the remains found on Saturday morning.
Forest rangers, a DEC investigator and New York State Police converged on the location and authorities confirmed Sunday the body is that of Dufour, who failed to return from one-day hike as planned on Nov. 30.
A multi-agency search for Dufour was announced last December and they looked for Dufour for several weeks before resuming this spring after snow receded across the Adirondack backcountry.
In December, authorities had explained Dufour's car was found covered in snow at a trailhead, but tracking him had been
difficult due to recent snowfall.
Dufour, of Vaudreuil, Que., just west of Montreal, had travelled to the U.S. to hike the Allen Mountain in the town of Newcomb on Nov. 29, 2024.
The DEC offered its condolences to Dufour's family and thanked forest rangers for their tireless efforts in the last few months.

RCMP investigators returned to Greenwood, N.S., this week to resume the search for the remains of Esther Jones, a 55-year-old woman who was killed last August. A man has been charged with first-degree murder. But Jones's body has not been located. On Wednesday, RCMP appealed to the public for help, asking anyone who spots anything unusual to come forward. Dale Allen Toole, 54, of Tremont, N.S., was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in September 2024 after attempting to flee to Mexico. He remains in custody and is awaiting trial. "The investigation doesn't stop there, " Marshall said on Thursday. "We don't have Esther's remains at this point." Investigators have conducted over 100 interviews, collected video surveillance from more than 50 locations, and searched multiple sites in and around Annapolis County, according to an RCMP news release on Wednesday. Jones's family is grateful for the renewed search although it is a reminder that the trauma of their loss is ongoing. "Victim's families get a life sentence," said niece Esther Uhlman. "We never get to move past this." Jones's sister, Margery Parker, who lives in Alberta, said the family is thankful the community has donated a burial plot in Tremont, where Jones could be laid to rest beside her parents — if she is found. Marshall urged anyone with information, especially those who had contact with Toole between Aug. 31 and Sept. 7, 2024, to come forward.

Remains found at lake northeast of Halifax confirmed to be missing boater
A body located last month at a lake northeast of Halifax has been confirmed to be a boater who went missing in April. RCMP received a report on April 10 about a capsized boat on Cousins Lake. Two men had been in the four-metre boat when it struck something in the water. A 53-year-old man swam to shore and called for help at 3:25 p.m., but a search failed to find the other boater, a 58-year-old man from Truro, RCMP say. RCMP say the man's loved ones went to the lake on May 4 and found human remains, which were later confirmed by the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service to be the missing boater. The man's death is not believed to be suspicious, police say.
