Women's Nations League volleyball: Japan recover from 2 sets down to beat Thailand 3-2
Japan continued their dominance of the FIVB Volleyball Women's Nations League on Wednesday, coming back from two sets down to beat Thailand 3-2 at Hong Kong's Kai Tak Arena and move to the top of the tournament rankings.
Before their Hong Kong campaign got under way, world No 5 Japan had a flawless week in Ottawa, Canada, at the beginning of June, winning all four of their games without dropping a set.
But they were made to work for their victory this time around, as world No 14 Thailand came close to pulling off an upset against Asia's highest-ranked side.
'Congratulations to the Japanese team, they showed high spirit and high performance at a world-class level,' said Thailand head coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai.
'We learned a lot from them, especially in defence and attack.'

Thailand capitalised on a series of errors by their Asian counterparts to win the first two sets 25-18, 25-23. In the past four meetings between the two countries, Thailand had failed to win a single set.

Matthew Poon gets chance on Packing Hermod: ‘Everybody thought Manfred's horse was going to run'
Jockey Matthew Poon Ming-fai will get his chance aboard the in-form Packing Hermod in Sunday's Group Three Premier Cup (1,400m) – something trainer Francis Lui Kin-wai has put down to the absence of the Manfred Man Ka-leung-trained Lucky Sweynesse. While Packing Hermod will carry 126lb in the Premier Cup, the presence of the 127-rated Lucky Sweynesse would have seen the four-year-old assigned the minimum weight of 115lb. 'Everybody thought Manfred Man's horse was going to run, so everybody thought the other horses would be carrying a light weight. We picked the jockey early and I think that's why Zac [Purton] didn't pick this horse,' said Lui. It was Purton in the saddle for Packing Hermod's last-start course-and-distance victory in Class Two, while Joao Moreira did the steering when the son of Rubick saluted in similar style two starts ago. That pair of successes has driven Packing Hermod to a rating of 107 and improved his record to six wins from 10 starts, with Lui confident now is the time to throw his charge into Group company for the first time. 'This horse keeps improving and I think next season he will be even better again,' said Lui of Packing Hermod, who Poon will partner out of barrier seven. Fresh after a few days holidaying on the mainland, Lui is preparing for a busy Sunday at Sha Tin and the veteran handler boasts a third of the Premier Cup field. Copartner Prance and Patch Of Theta complete the trainer's hand in the season's penultimate Group contest, with Patch Of Theta looking to repeat his success in January's Group Three Chinese Club Challenge Cup (1,400m). Rated 98 when carrying 115lb from outside the handicap in that triumph, Patch Of Theta now finds himself lugging 128lb off a mark of 109. 'I think the 1,400m is good for him and I just hope the pace is fast enough for him to travel. A lot will depend on the race situation,' said Lui. Smart win, Patch Of Theta! 🫡 Francis Lui's Hong Kong International Sale graduate could be Stewards' Cup bound after his smashing G3 Chinese Club Challenge Cup victory on New Year's Day at Sha Tin... @KarisTeetan #LuckyStart | #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) January 2, 2025 Andrea Atzeni rides Patch Of Theta and Copartner Prance will be partnered by Keagan de Melo, while Purton reunites with Group One victor Beauty Eternal after the John Size-trained galloper's improved showing in last month's Group Three Lion Rock Trophy (1,600m). Rounding out the Premier Cup field are Victor The Winner, Invincible Sage, Happy Together, reigning champion Mugen and Taj Dragon. Lui is also well represented in Sunday's other Group Three, the Premier Plate (1,800m), but neither Hong Kong Derby hero Cap Ferrat or Chancheng Glory had much luck with the barrier gods. Dropping significantly in distance after running third behind Voyage Bubble in last month's Group One Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m), Cap Ferrat and rider Hugh Bowman must contend with gate nine and Lui is approaching the race with uncertainty. 'It's hard to say how he will go but I'm a little bit worried about the draw,' said the trainer. A half-length second behind Pray For Mir in the recent Lion Rock Trophy, Chancheng Glory jumps from gate 12 under Luke Ferraris.

How South Korea's music festival scene is getting bigger, louder and more diverse
It was an early summer day and, without a cloud in the sky, the temperature in Seoul Olympic Park hit 28 degrees Celsius (82 degrees Fahrenheit). But the rising heat did not deter Elena Joo from attending this year's Seoul Jazz Festival, with international headliners such as Thundercat, Jacob Collier and Lany, as well as chart-topping home favourites like Crush, Epik High and Jannabi. 'This is my first time going to the Seoul Jazz Festival after putting it off for the past few years,' said the 35-year-old Seoul native, clinging on to a picnic mat and other outdoor necessities like water bottles and a packed lunchbox. 'I knew that the festival happened every year in my neighbourhood. But it was when everyone started to talk about it like this big, one-of-a-kind annual event that I actually wanted to go.' There have been quite a number of large-scale music events in South Korea this year. EDC (Electric Daisy Carnival) Korea unofficially kicked off the festival season at the end of April with South Korean DJ Peggy Gou making a much-anticipated headliner appearance at Incheon's newly built Inspire Entertainment Resort. The audience braves the summer heat to watch the Yussef Dayes Experience on the main stage at the 2025 Seoul Jazz Festival. Photo: Seoul Jazz Festival The 17th edition of the Seoul Jazz Festival, held between May 30 and June 1, brought in a total of 46,000 attendees who shuttled between the main stage in 88 Lawn Field – the number in reference to the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games – the KSPO Dome and SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium, which are some of the biggest indoor concert venues in the country.

Jockey Club receives government approval to significantly increase simulcast programme
Royal Ascot is one of the biggest simulcast weeks of the year for the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Photos: Reuters The Jockey Club has received government approval to significantly up its simulcast programme, with the number of overseas meetings offered for betting to Hong Kong punters increasing from 37 to 70 in the next two years. The number of meetings the Jockey Club can simulcast will jump from 37 to 53 in the 2025-26 season and climb to 70 in 2026-27, while the number of simulcast races – races from overseas shown on Hong Kong race days – will increase from 25 to 40 from 2025-26 and rocket to 55 from the 2026-27 season. This week's Royal Ascot festival is one of the biggest simulcast events of the season, with punters wagering HK$364.3 million on Wednesday's card, HK$31 million of which the Jockey Club paid to the government as betting duty. The latest rise continues a steady increase in the Jockey Club's simulcast product, while betting on basketball will also soon be available to Hongkongers. 'The Hong Kong Jockey Club welcomes the approval granted by the HKSAR government [HKSARG] to progressively increase simulcast quotas over two racing seasons starting from 2025-26,' said the Jockey Club in a statement. Crimson Advocate wins at Royal Ascot on Wednesday. 'The club believes this arrangement will help tackle illegal betting by channelling betting demand to its legal channel. 'As a long-standing partner of the HKSARG, the club has long supported its efforts to combat illegal betting. This includes providing legal and regulated gambling channels to prevent the public from betting illegally. 'With this increase in simulcast quotas, the club's fixtures will cover most of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities World's Top 100 Group One Races. 'This will strengthen the club's position and efforts to combat illegal betting on non-local horse racing. 'As a world-class racing and sports organisation, which always calls Hong Kong home, the proposal will support the club's efforts to promote the internationalisation of Hong Kong racing, thereby supporting HKSARG initiatives to tell good stories about Hong Kong and promote racing tourism. 'It will also foster global and local racing business development and enhance Hong Kong's status as a leading jurisdiction in the global racing arena, as well as providing more tax revenue and contributions to support social betterment.'
