Tea dating app confirms photo leak amid surge in users

Canada News.Net6 days ago
NEW YORK CITY, New York: Tea, a controversial dating app that allows women to anonymously review and comment on their experiences with men, has confirmed a significant data breach affecting tens of thousands of user images.
The company disclosed that hackers gained unauthorized access to its systems, compromising approximately 72,000 images.
A spokesperson for Tea told Reuters over the weekend that the breach involved 13,000 photos submitted for identity verification — including selfies and official IDs — along with 59,000 images taken from user-generated posts, comments, and direct messages. The company emphasized that no phone numbers or email addresses were exposed and that the breach only affects users who joined the platform before February 2024.
"There is no evidence at this time that any additional user data was impacted," the company said in a statement. "Protecting Tea users' privacy and data is our highest priority."
Tea stated that users do not need to change their passwords or delete their accounts and added that "all data has been secured." The company said it has brought in third-party cybersecurity experts and is working "around the clock" to fortify its infrastructure.
The breach was first reported by tech news outlet 404 Media on July 25.
Tea, which launched with the mission that "women should never have to compromise their safety while dating," has grown rapidly in popularity. The app allows verified women to anonymously share Yelp-style reviews of men they've dated or interacted with. Some reviews include serious allegations, such as emotional abuse, coercion, or non-consensual behavior.
One user wrote in an Apple Store review that she discovered over 20 red flags about a man she had just started speaking to, including accusations of assault and secretly recording women. "I can't imagine how things could've gone had I not known," she wrote.
The app surged to the No. 1 spot on Apple's U.S. App Store as of July 24, driven by viral attention on social media. According to analytics firm Sensor Tower, downloads rose by 525 percent in the week of July 17 to 23. Tea claims it received over two million new user requests in recent days and now has a total of four million users.
However, the app has also drawn criticism for what some see as a form of digital vigilantism. A columnist for The Times of London described Tea as a "man-shaming site," writing that it relies entirely on anonymous users with no accountability. "With Tea on the scene, what man would ever dare date a woman again?" she asked.
Lawyers have also noted the legal risks for users. Attorney Aaron Minc said his firm has received hundreds of complaints related to Tea in recent weeks. "People are upset. They're getting named and shamed," he said. While U.S. law generally shields platforms from liability for user-generated content, individuals can still be sued for defamation or privacy violations.
Tea's rapid rise — and the backlash that followed — may have made it a target. "These sites create enemies. They put targets on themselves," Minc added. "It's not surprising to see them get attacked."

Trump will highlight Apple's plans to invest $100 billion more in US, raising total to $600 billion

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Wednesday is expected to celebrate at the White House a commitment by Apple to increase its U.S. investments by an additional $100 billion over the next four years. 'Today's announcement with Apple is another win for our manufacturing industry that will simultaneously help reshore the production of critical components to protect America's economic and national security,' White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said. Apple had previously said it intended to invest $500 billion domestically, a figure it will now increase to $600 billion. Trump in recent months has criticized the tech company and its CEO, Tim Cook, for efforts to shift iPhone production to India to avoid the tariffs his Republican administration had planned for China. While in Qatar earlier this year, Trump said there was 'a little problem' with Apple and recalled a conversation with Cook in which he said he told the CEO, 'I don't want you building in India.' India has incurred Trump's wrath, as the president signed an order Wednesday to put an additional 25% tariff on the world's most populous country for its use of Russian oil. The new import taxes to be imposed in 21 days could put the combined tariffs on Indian goods at 50%. As part of the Apple announcement, the investments will be about bringing more of its supply chain and advanced manufacturing to the U.S. Apple Inc., which is based in Cupertino, California, didn't immediately comment Wednesday. Bloomberg News first reported the announcement of Apple's additional investment commitment.

White House official: Apple to announce US$100 billion pledge

The Apple logo is illuminated in the entrance to a Apple store. WASHINGTON — Apple Inc will announce a domestic manufacturing pledge of US$100 billion on Wednesday that will focus on bringing more manufacturing to the United States, a White House official said. The pledge would be a new financial commitment on top of what Apple has already pledged, the official said on customary condition of anonymity. Apple said in February it would spend $500 billion in U.S. investments in the next four years that will include a giant factory in Texas for artificial intelligence servers while adding about 20,000 research and development jobs across the country. Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Earlier, White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said Apple Inc was likely to make an investment announcement on Wednesday, as he discussed the financial pledges made by companies and countries under President Donald Trump. 'They're moving here in droves. This is trillions and trillions of dollars of commitments for people to build new factories here. In fact, you're likely to see one today from Apple,' Hassett said in an interview with Fox Business Network. He did not elaborate. Key Points Amazon's median target price of $262 per share currently implies 24% upside, making it the best trillion-dollar stock to buy now, according to Wall Street. Amazon shares have dropped 10% since its second quarter earnings report because investors were concerned by management's guidance. Amazon remains ideally positioned to benefit from artificial intelligence, and the company has consistently exceeded Wall Street's forward earnings estimates. 10 stocks we like better than Amazon › Only eight companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges currently have a market value above $1 trillion. The median target price of $276 per share implies 15% upside from the current share price of $239. Most Wall Street analysts think Amazon is the best trillion-dollar stock to buy right now. Here's what investors should know. Amazon stock has declined 10% since the company reported second-quarter results Amazon reported second-quarter financial results that crushed estimates on the top and bottom lines. Sales increased 13% to $168 billion on particularly strong revenue growth in the advertising segment, coupled with solid momentum in the retail and cloud segments. Operating margin expanded 150 basis points, and GAAP earnings increased 34% to $1.68 per diluted share. Management provided the following third-quarter guidance: Revenue will increase 11% to $177 billion, and operating income will increase 3% to $18 billion. Investors were disappointed by the weak earnings forecast. That, coupled with somewhat underwhelming growth in cloud computing sales, has caused the stock to drop 10% since the company reported its second-quarter financial results. I think the market got this wrong. Amazon's cloud sales may have increased more slowly than Microsoft's and Alphabet's, but its sales growth is also measured on a much larger base. Amazon accounted for 30% of cloud infrastructure and platform services spending in the second quarter, while Microsoft and Alphabet accounted for 20% and 13%, respectively. Also, Amazon gave somewhat disappointing guidance for operating income, but caution is warranted given the tariff landscape. Moreover, the same thing happened last quarter and the company beat expectations. Not surprisingly, Wall Street remains broadly optimistic. More than a dozen analysts revised their target prices higher after the second-quarter report. Amazon is ideally positioned to benefit from artificial intelligence in retail and cloud computing The investment thesis for Amazon centers on its strong presence in three large industries. It runs the largest e-commerce marketplace worldwide by revenue, and the most popular by web traffic. It is the third largest ad tech company in the world by revenue, and the leader in the retail advertising segment. And Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the largest public cloud by infrastructure and platform services spending. Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak earlier this year called Amazon an underappreciated leader in generative artificial intelligence (AI) across its retail and cloud businesses. Details are provided below: Retail: Amazon has developed more than 1,000 generative AI applications to make its retail operations more efficient, including systems that optimize inventory placement, demand forecasting, and last-mile delivery. The company has also developed an AI model that lets robots navigate warehouses faster, and it's building an AI model that will let workers engage robots conversationally. Finally, Amazon is preparing to test humanoid robots for package delivery. Cloud: AWS has designed custom chips for AI training and inference that offer better price performance than the current generation of GPUs, according to management. It has also introduced a generative AI development platform called Bedrock, and more recently added tools that help clients build and scale AI agents. AWS is also the primary cloud provider for Anthropic, which could lead to an acceleration in cloud revenue in the coming quarters because the AI start-up is growing rapidly. Importantly, Amazon has an opportunity to monetize artificial intelligence beyond its core retail and cloud businesses. Its subsidiary Zoox is building robotaxis, and the company will launch its first autonomous ride-hailing service in Las Vegas this year, followed other cities shortly thereafter. Morgan Stanley estimates Zoox could have commercial robotaxi services in seven U.S. cities by 2028. Amazon has consistently exceeded Wall Street's expectations Wall Street estimates Amazon's earnings will increase at 10% annually through 2026. That makes the current valuation of 32 times earnings look somewhat expensive. But analysts have consistently underestimated the company. Amazon topped the consensus earnings estimate by an average of 22% in the last six quarters. Going forward, I think Amazon will continue to beat expectations as it leans on AI across its retail and cloud businesses, and branches into new markets like autonomous ride-hailing.
