Euro 2025: England thumps Wales 6-1 to set up quarterfinal clash with Sweden
England had bounced back from
losing to France
in its opener by
routing the Netherlands 4-0
and it raced into a 4-0 halftime lead against Wales following goals from Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo.
Substitutes Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones added more in the second half either side of Hannah Cain's stylish consolation for Wales.
The result saw Sarina Wiegman's team advance as runner-up in Group D, ensuring England a potentially easier path to the final, after
France beat the Netherlands 5-2 to win the group
. Wales and the Netherlands are eliminated.
England will play Sweden in the quarterfinals and could then face either Norway or Italy.
Had they won the group, the Lionesses would have encountered Germany before a possible semifinal against World Cup winner and tournament favorite Spain, which plays host nation Switzerland in the last eight.
It was always going to be a tall order for Wales, on its tournament debut, to beat the reigning champion. It had lost nine of its 10 previous matches against England, only managing one draw against its neighbor and historic rival.
Penalty opener
And the challenge for Wales became even harder when England was awarded a penalty — by the video assistant referee — after Carrie Jones tripped Stanway just inside the area.
Stanway sent the penalty into the bottom left corner to give England a 13th-minute lead and a disaster in defense allowed the Lionesses to double that tally eight minutes later.
An attempted clearance came off Stanway and fell to Russo, who rounded the Wales goalkeeper before rolling it across for Toone. The Manchester United forward's first attempt was blocked by Wales defender Lily Woodham but she lashed the rebound into the top right corner.
Toone turned provider in the 30th, running onto a pass from Lauren James and crossing for Hemp to head in from a tight angle at the back post.
It was Hemp's first goal since returning from a five-month layoff after undergoing knee surgery in November.
Wales had been poor, while England had been brutally efficient and the Lionesses added another goal on the stroke of halftime. A sublime pass from James — between two Welsh players — released Toone, who rolled it across for Russo to tuck into the bottom left corner.
Halftime changes
With the result a foregone conclusion, Wiegman rang the changes at halftime, bringing on Jess Park and Mead for Toone and Hemp.
Park almost scored early in her tournament debut, but Olivia Clark turned her volley onto the post with a smart save.
Mead was the Euro 2022 player of the tournament and she got her first goal in this edition in the 72nd minute after a superb bit of skill saw her latch onto a good ball from Beever-Jones and carve out some space in the area before slotting past Clark.
Wales reduced the deficit in style as Jess Fishlock went on a storming run from inside her area before threading the ball through for Cain to lash into the back of the net.
Beever-Jones headed in Mead's cross in the 89th minute to wrap up the scoring.

Aston Villa optimistic midfielder Boubacar Kamara will sign new contract
There is growing optimism that Boubacar Kamara will sign a new contract at Aston Villa. The Athletic reported in April that Villa had made a contract offer to Kamara, 25, who has two years remaining on his existing terms. The France international had been waiting to see whether Villa qualified for the Champions League before committing to fresh terms. They missed out on the final day after finishing sixth. However, all parties are increasingly positive of finalising terms on an extension, which would prove a major boost ahead of the upcoming campaign. Advertisement Kamara joined Villa from Marseille on a free transfer in summer 2022 and has made 97 appearances for the West Midlands club in all competitions, scoring twice. The midfielder has been a regular in Unai Emery's side since returning from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) sustained against Manchester United in February 2024. He was out for more than eight months before making his return in a Champions League fixture against Bologna in October last year. From December, he started 27 of Villa's 34 matches in the Premier League and Champions League, missing three games with a hamstring issue. Analysis by Jacob Tanswell There is a widely held school of thought that Kamara is Villa's most important player, which is why they are so determined to keep him. The midfielder had been keeping his options open at the end of last season, following Villa narrowly missing out on Champions League football, with several high-calibre clubs interested, as well as admiration from Saudi Arabia. The France international is the glue in Villa's midfield and has struck up an excellent partnership with Villa's best player last season, Youri Tielemans. Provided Kamara can stay fit for the duration of the campaign, having been out with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) last summer, it should make a huge impact to how Villa's season unfolds.

Hundreds attend funeral of David 'Syd' Lawrence
Hundreds of people have attended the funeral of former England and Gloucestershire fast bowler David "Syd" Lawrence in Bristol. Lawrence, the first British-born black cricketer to represent England, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in 2024 and died last month at the age of 61. Family, friends, and former teammates from both Gloucestershire and England, along with members of the public, gathered to remember him at St Mary Redcliffe Church on Friday. An emotional Phil Tufnell, Lawrence's friend and former England teammate, said Lawrence was "someone who you wanted on your side". "[He was a] larger-than-life character and filled the room when he came in. We had some great laughs along the way," he said. "He had this great big deep voice. He'd always say hello to everyone. It's sad that he had to go." Lawrence's son, Buster, described his dad as "a loving man" with "so much love to give". "For me, for all the accolades - not that they don't mean anything to me - but he was my dad first and foremost," he said. "He did such a great job being a dad that if you took all that away he would still be the best dad to me and the best friend." He added that behind the "hard, big exterior" his dad would do anything for the people he cared about. Revd Rupert Martin led the funeral, with the hymns including the well-known 'The Lord is my Shepherd'. A eulogy was read by George Orchard, followed by family tributes from Shauna Mighty and Bev Powell, Alice Lawrence and Buster - Lawrence's son. The Bristol Reggae Windrush Choir, which performed outside the church before the service began, also sang during the service. Current Gloucestershire Head Coach and former teammate Mark Alleyne said afterwards: "The service was wonderful. "[I'm] really proud to have known him and so glad he's touched so many lives." The funeral was followed by a wake at the County Ground in north Bristol. Lawrence, affectionally known as "Syd", was given an MBE in the King's Birthday Honours weeks before he died for outstanding services to cricket. He played five Test matches for England and took 625 wickets in 280 matches during a 16-year career at Gloucestershire, where he grew up. After retirement he became a nightclub owner and amateur bodybuilder before being named Gloucestershire's club president in 2022, a role he remained in until his death. Former cricketer Andy Brassington said he was with Lawrence, who he was friends with for more than 44 years, just an hour before his death. Speaking outside the church, Mr Brassington added he "has lost a best mate". "It was a difficult situation for us all, and it was time for Syd to go. But right until the end was there he was positive." Additional reporting by Ali Durden, Ed Hadwin and James Diamond. Follow BBC Bristol on Facebook, X and Instagram.
