Former Silat Athlete Conferred State Medal In Conjunction With Selangor Sultan's Birthday
SHAH ALAM, May 14 (Bernama) -- The Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah today conferred the state medals on 155 recipients including former national silat athlete Muhammad Afifi Nordin.
Muhammad Afifi was conferred the Pingat Kecemerlangan Sukan Selangor (P.K.S.) in an investiture ceremony held in conjunction with the 79th birthday of the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
The ceremony, held at the Dewan Jubli Perak Sultan Abdul Aziz here today, involved recipients from the districts of Hulu Selangor, Kuala Selangor, Gombak, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat, Sabak Bernam and Sepang.

For the South Korean, the new-look Harimau Malaya outfit only adds to the mystery ahead of the crucial 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifier at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil tomorrow. 'Malaysia now have about eight to 10 newly naturalised (mixed heritage) players compared to their last tournament,' said Sang-sik to the media in Vietnam. 'It makes tactical analysis more challenging. We are continuing to monitor and prepare accordingly.' This wave of mixed heritage players, or addressed as the 'Malaysians Abroad' by coach Peter Cklamovski, are featuring in a competitive international for the first time. Thus, it has given Malaysia a more unpredictable look and Sang-sik knows better than to underestimate them. The new Malaysian heritage players that have joined this call-up are Argentine-born attackers Rodrigo Holgado and Imanol Machuca and centreback Facundo Garces, Brazilian-born striker Joao Figueiredo and Spanish-born centreback Jon Irazabal. While Malaysia are enjoying an extended preparation period under Cklamovski, the Golden Star Warriors are taking a more compressed route into the clash, with limited time and a depleted squad due to injuries. Sang-sik remains confident though. 'Compared to Malaysia, we've only had about 10 days to prepare. 'Some players from Hanoi Police and Binh Duong joined the training camp late, which slightly affected our preparations. But the team quickly adapted and have shown great training spirit.' One major setback came with the injury to star striker Nguyen Cong Phuong, who had just earned his first call-up under Sang-sik. 'It's a significant loss. His experience would have been valuable against Malaysia. Still, with the remaining 23 players, we are refining our gameplay and making the best possible preparations.' To bolster the side, Sang-sik is turning to Vietnamese-French defender Jason Pendant, whose versatility could prove key. 'He can play as a left-sided centreback, fullback, or even winger. His flexibility adds depth to our tactical options and we're working to see how best to utilise his strengths.' Despite the changes and setbacks, Vietnam enter the clash with a psychological advantage – they haven't lost to Malaysia in more than a decade. 'That's a remarkable record, especially given how competitive Malaysia and Thailand have been in the region. 'It reflects our meticulous preparation and the confidence we've built over the years.' On the challenge of playing away in a cauldron like Bukit Jalil, Sang-sik drew strength from past experience. 'We played in front of a packed Rajamangala Stadium in Thailand during the AFF Cup final. The pressure is intense but what matters is that our players trust themselves, their teammates, and the coaching staff.'

Ruthless Pearly-Thinaah in final

The pair have won a total of four BWF World Tour titles to date. PETALING JAYA: Women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah stormed into the Indonesian Open final after an impressive win over China's world No. 6 Li Yijing-Luo Xumin. Pearly-Thinaah displayed great fighting spirit and determination to come from behind to claim a 12-21, 21-17, 21-11 victory in 64 minutes at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta on Saturday (June 7). Advertisement It was a huge breakthrough for the world No. 4 pair as they have reached their maiden World Tour Super 1000 final. Pearly-Thinaah achieved the personal milestone after avenging their defeat to Yijing-Xuomin in the China Open last September. Standing in Pearly-Thinaah's way to their biggest title so far will either be another Chinese pair, world No. 1 Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning or South Korea's world No. 3 Baek Ha-na-Lee So-hee. 'We are very happy because we managed to change the rhythm of the game to our advantage. We supported each other and communicated well, which greatly helped our win today,' said Pearly. Meanwhile, the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained by national men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong may well see him struggle to regain his old form, said former world number one Roslin Hashim. The ex-national shuttler also admitted that even before the ACL injury, Tze Yong's performances of late had been quite shaky since returning to action in April following a back injury. 'When Tze Yong sustained the lower back injury previously, he had to undergo surgery… now he has got an ACL injury (knee). These two lower parts of the body are extremely crucial to a shuttler. 'When he came back to action (after his lower back injury), his performance wasn't that stable either. At an age where he should be reaching his peak powers but, unfortunately, he has suffered another serious injury and his recovery this time will take a long time. So, it will be difficult for Tze Yong to regain his old form,' he said. The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) confirmed in a statement that Tze Yong suffered an ACL injury, with the 25-year-old shuttler also admitting to finding it hard to accept this latest injury blow after all the efforts he had put in to get back to action. BAM singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen said Tze Yong, who may be sidelined for nine to 12 months, is currently undergoing prehabilitation (prehab) to strengthen the knee and the surrounding muscles ahead of the scheduled surgery for the ACL injury he sustained at the 2025 Malaysia Masters last month. Tze Yong has suffered various injuries, including a muscle tear in his back followed by a spinal injury since last year and underwent a long period of rest and rehabilitation before returning to action in the Badminton Asia Championship 2025 in Ningbo, China, in April. Despite his bleak assessment of Tze Yong's situation, Roslin, however, hopes the 2022 Commonwealth Games men's singles silver medallist possesses a burning desire and determination to fight back from adversity. 'I sympathise with Tze Yong, I hope he remains strong. If he intends to get back on the court, he will need every ounce of his inner strength and remain steadfast in facing this latest setback,' he said. Wei Chong-Kai Wun go down fighting in Indonesian Open semis

Wei Chong-Kai Wun had beaten world No. 8 Sabar-Moh in the last four last year but the latter avenged their defeat by coming out on top 18-21, 21-12, 21-18 at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta on Saturday (June 7). World No. 7 Wei Chong-Kai Wun did well to come back and win the second game after losing the first but could not maintain their form against the spirited duo in the decider and lost in the match lasting an hour. Sabar-Moh will take on either teammates Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto or South Korea's Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae for the title on Sunday (June 8).
