West Yorkshire parents urged to help shape future of school buses
Parents and carers are being asked to share their views on the future of school bus services.At present, support for school buses varies across West Yorkshire's five local authorities.The West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) is running a public consultation until 11 June, with any changes set to come into force from September 2026.Mayor Tracy Brabin urged parents, schools and students to take part in a bid to develop a "new region-wide travel-to-school strategy that best serves West Yorkshire".
The WYCA has arrangements in place for about 328 buses which carry on average up to 20,000 pupils per day.This includes 28 services that carry about 1,000 children to primary schools, the majority of which were introduced under the government-backed Mybus scheme.These costs typically increase year on year, having risen from £15.96m in 2022/23 to £16.50m in 2023/24 and £18.99m in 2024/25.
In February, two school bus services which faced being scrapped as part of Bradford Council's efforts to cut costs were given funding to keep them running well into 2026.Bradford Council had proposed ending the routes to Bingley Grammar School and St Bede's and St Joseph's Catholic College in September in a bid to save about £500,000 a year.But following criticism from parents, the council and the WYCA confirmed they would continue to fund the services until "at least the summer of 2026".
School bus services in West Yorkshire were last reviewed by the WYCA Transport Committee in July 2019. Since then, the WYCA said there had been "significant change", including the impact of Covid-19 on the bus network and the decision taken in March 2024 by Brabin to implement bus franchising across the region.The programme for the implementation of bus franchising will see the first bus services through this new operating model start at the end of March 2027. This will include school bus services, and the contracts for delivery of the first phase of services will be issued for operators to bid against in October 2025.
'Better-connected region'
Transport Committee chair Susan Hinchcliffe said: "The region's school bus policy is currently a mix of various agreements with different council areas – the result has been that parts of our region have differing levels of support from the Combined Authority."That is why it is important to create a new school bus strategy for the whole of West Yorkshire, which will help us with our plans to create a better-connected region."Brabin said: "It is vital for us to make sure our children and young people have safe, secure and prompt routes to and from school."That is why I am urging as many parents, students and schools as possible to get in touch and take part in the consultation when it starts at the end of April – so we can create a new, region-wide travel to school strategy that best serves West Yorkshire."

EasyJet crew members to walk out across Spain on key summer dates
EasyJet workers will walk out en masse from airports across Spain this summer. On June 25, 26 and 27 hundreds of flight attendants will hit the picket line at airports including Barcelona, Alicante, Malaga and Palma. The strike is being called by USO Unión Sindical Obrera union and could see 657 cabin crew strike, in a move that will impact as many as 21 aircraft. The union has argued that Spanish easyJet flight attendants are paid too little, claiming that those at Spanish bases are receive between 30% and 200% less in wages than those at other European bases. It is therefore demanding 'decent, fair and equitable' working conditions, in line with other countries, Majorca Daily Bulletin reports. The airline intends to operate normally during the strike days, a spokesperson said, adding the company would do everything possible to minimise the impact. The industrial action is being called amid a deadlock in negotiations, which, according to the union, are in 'absolute disagreement'. EasyJet has been contacted for comment. The strikes were pencilled in in the weeks after the budget carrier announced it's set to make a comeback in Newcastle, reopening its base nearly half a decade after its closure during the peak of the Covid crisis. The airline is gearing up to launch operations from Newcastle International Airport come next spring, promising to create 130 new roles for pilots, cabin crew, and engineers. Back in September 2020, amidst the travel turmoil caused by the pandemic, easyJet shuttered its Newcastle site along with its London Stansted and London Southend bases, affecting roughly 670 staff members. Earlier in the same year, the airline had disclosed intentions to slash its workforce by up to 30% as it battled the fallout from Covid lockdowns and travel curbs. Kenton Jarvis, the CEO of easyJet, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion: "The UK is an important market for easyJet, and we are excited to be opening yet another UK base, in Newcastle, driven by the demand for our flights and package holidays." He added that this move not only reaffirms their status as the UK's leading leisure airline but also brings skilled job opportunities and essential connectivity to the area, contributing significantly to the UK's economic growth. Nick Jones, the chief executive at Newcastle Airport, welcomed the decision: "It is fantastic that easyJet has chosen to open a new base at Newcastle Airport in spring 2026 following such strong demand for flights and package holidays from our passengers." Recently, easyJet reported a seasonal headline pre-tax loss of £394 million for the six months up to the end of March. This represents a widening of losses compared to the £350 million reported the previous year. However, the company noted that when accounting for the later timing of Easter this year, the results showed a "slight improvement" of approximately £50 million. According to Mr Jarvis: "We continue to see strong demand for easyJet's flights and holidays, as we attract more customers through our great fares, friendly service and unrivalled network of destinations. We are executing well against our strategy, to drive efficiency and enhance our customer experience both in the sky and on the ground." EasyJet announces direct flights between Aberdeen Airport and Paris
The popular low-cost airline will introduce the route from Aberdeen International Airport to Charles de Gaulle at the end of October. Tickets are already available to book via the easyJet website, with the first flight to leave at 1.15pm on Monday, October 27. EasyJet will now offer north-east holidaymakers the opportunity to travel directly to Paris in just a few hours. From Charles de Gaulle, Paris's city centre is only half an hour away, while a high-speed train to Disneyland only takes 10 minutes. Ticket prices for the flights vary, with the cheapest one-way option starting at £30.99 and the most expensive being £85.99. The news comes after easyJet unveiled in April more than 8000 trips across its Scottish network, including 107 destinations in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, had gone on sale.
