Ramanathapuram SP hands over 100 mobile phones to owners

Ramanathapuram district Superintendent of Police G. Chandeesh handed over Rs.25 lakh worth mobile phones to the owners here on Wednesday. As about 582 mobile phones were handed over to the concerned owners in 2024, 300 mobile phones were handed over to the owners in 2025. In addition, 100 more were given to the complainants who had lost their mobile phones to thefts and other reasons. During the event, Mr. Chandeesh informed the public to be cautious about calls demanding personal details and other information about bank accounts. Also, only the customer care numbers authorized by the banks should be used to register complaints or for any other queries, he added. 'Also public should not fall prey to gaming applications and software promising monetary profits. People should also refrain from depositing money for online jobs in return,' he said. In the name of chit funds, there were crime syndicates operating to swindle the deposited money. 'Though several crimes have been registered regarding chit fund organisations siphoning off crores of rupees, people continue to believe and deposit money for bigger returns,' he noted. Such crimes could be prevented only if the public become aware of the techniques employed by fraudsters in cheating people, Mr. Chandeesh said.

How to claim your share of $4.5M GameStop data breach settlement. Details here

There are only a few days left to claim your share of a $4.5 million settlement with GameStop. This comes after a lawsuit said the company sold customers' personal data to Facebook without permission, according to WFFA. In June, GameStop emailed customers about the settlement. It denied wrongdoing but settled to avoid trial costs and risks.(REUTERS) The class action lawsuit said GameStop broke federal law, specifically the Video Privacy Protection Act, or VPPA. The company took customer data from purchases on its website and gave it to Facebook. GameStop did not admit to doing anything wrong as part of the settlement. The deadline to file a claim is Friday, August 15. Also Read: GameStop's wild ride has Indian retail traders joining in Who can get money from the GameStop settlement? Anyone who bought a video game from GameStop's website between August 18, 2020, and April 7, 2025, and had a public Facebook profile with their name at the time of purchase is eligible. In June, GameStop sent emails about the settlement to customers who bought games on their website. Although GameStop did not admit fault, it agreed to settle to avoid the costs and risks of continuing the lawsuit. If you got that email, you are likely part of the settlement group. How much money can you get? Eligible people can get either up to $5 in cash or a GameStop voucher worth up to $10. It is not clear how many people qualify for the settlement. How do you file a claim? First, check your email. The payments are linked to a unique ID number in the email from GameStop. This ID is a 10-character mix of letters and numbers. Anyone with this ID can file a claim before August 15 to get their payment. If you choose a voucher, the credit will be added to your GameStop account linked to your email. Meghalaya-Bangladesh border sealed in hunt for armed infiltrators

Shillong, Aug 13 (PTI) The BSF on Wednesday said it has sealed all escape routes along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya, as a joint operation is underway to track down armed infiltrators who robbed, assaulted and attempted to kidnap a villager in South West Khasi Hills district. The operation, launched in the Majersora-Hathinala forest belt, is being conducted jointly with the Meghalaya Police and members of Village Defence Parties, officials said. The K-9 dog squad has also been deployed, officials said. According to BSF officials, the infiltration took place on August 8 when at least eight armed men from Bangladesh crossed the border in the Bagli sector, stormed Rongdangai village, stabbed and injured a civilian, vandalised property, and tried to abduct a resident. From August 9 to 11, coordinated action by BSF troops and police led to the arrest of four suspects and the recovery of a Bangladesh Police identity card, wireless sets, wire cutters, Indian and Bangladeshi currency, a suspected explosive substance, and handcuffs. Two more were later caught, bringing the total arrests to six. One of them, identified as Akram, was apprehended by villagers but died during treatment from injuries sustained during his capture. On August 12, the joint teams recovered an intact suspected country-made explosive while continuing the search for the remaining intruders. Inspector General of BSF Meghalaya Frontier O P Upadhyay, who is personally supervising the operation, commended the courage and cooperation of the troops, police, and villagers, and reaffirmed BSF's commitment to safeguarding India's borders from cross-border threats. The combing operation is continuing, the BSF said in a statement.
