Kilmarnock boss backs defender to bring 'quality' once he's up to speed with new club
The former Motherwell man made hus debut as a late substitute against Livingston Kilmarnock boss Stuart Kettlewell has backed new boy Dominic Thompson to bring 'quality' to the squad once he's fully up and running. The 25-year-old's signing was announced just hours before their Premiership opener at home to Livingston, with the former Motherwell man making his debut as a late substitute. That didn't exactly go to plan, however, as he was beaten by Lewis Smith down Killie's left flank with the winger then teeing up Scott Pittman for the equaliser. The departure of Corrie Ndaba to Serie A side Lecce last week had left the Rugby Park side with no natural left-back in the squad although youngster Ben Brannan - predominantly a right-back - had played there regularly during the League Cup group stages and once again got the nod at the weekend. Kettlewell had previously signed Thompson during his time at Motherwell, although he left the Fir Park hotseat just two days after bringing the former Blackpool full-back on board. The new arrival has signed a one-year deal at Rugby Park, with Kettlewell saying: 'Dom's somebody that I know, that I've signed before. We spoke about trying to get a balance to our team on the left side. Ben Brannan was good again and he filled that slot for us. 'We need to get Dom up to speed but it's safe to say it's an area of the pitch where we do need that cover and balance.' He added: 'Knowing him as I did for a short space of time working with him, then I think he's somebody that brings good quality. He had a good six months with Motherwell and he wants to hit the ground running here. 'Getting him up to speed and getting him fully fit — I think he gives us that wee bit of strength down the left-hand side.'
