Premium Bonds prize checker: When is May's draw and how can I check if I've won?

Independent30-04-2025

Every month, savers have the chance to win big prizes as the Premium Bonds winning numbers are announced. There are now 24 million people taking part in the government-backed savings scheme, with more than £127bn banked.
Premium bonds are an investment product from the National Savings and Investment (NS&I), which is owned by the government. Each month, millions of savers are entered into a prize draw to win cash prizes ranging from £25 to £1 million, with two millionaires made at every draw.
Every £1 entered has a 22,000-to-one chance of winning. The minimum investment is £25, while the maximum is £50,000.
These savings don't accrue interest as with regular bank accounts, but are put up against a random digital prize picker called 'Ernie' – the Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment.
The date of this month's draw is Thursday 1 May. The results of this draw will be released by NS&I the following day.
What are the chances of winning?
There are many premium bond winners every month, but the actual chance of winning remains fairly low. Most people will never win a prize, meaning their investment will stay the same. However, the scheme is also risk-free, meaning money won't be lost either.
Analysis by money expert Martin Lewis found that the 'interest rate' on premium bonds accounts is 4 per cent when all winnings are considered – but notes most people won't see anything like this. Many savings accounts in the UK also offer a higher interest rate than this, which will be far more consistent.
The distribution of prizes changes slightly every month. Here were the results in January 2025:
£1 million x 2
£100,000 x 82
£50,000 x 163
£25,000 x 328
£10,000 x 818
£5,000 x 1,636
£1,000 x 17,163
£500 x 51,489
£100 x 1,987,844
£50 x 1,987,844
£25 x 1,803,871

Martin Lewis says 800,000 parents are missing out on £2,000 a year

Money guru Martin Lewis has explained how parents can discover if they're missing out on childcare savings. On a recent episode of The Martin Lewis Money Show Live, Mr Lewis disclosed that 800,000 parents are eligible for tax-free childcare, many of whom are unaware they could be due some savings. The Government's scheme for working parents involves the state reimbursing parents 20% of childcare costs up to £500 per quarter. This means some parents could receive £2,000 annually. Eligible mothers and fathers must earn at least £850 monthly and no more than £100,000 each. The repayment scheme is applicable for children aged under 12, or under 16 if they have a disability, reports the Daily Star. He explained: "If you're sending your kids to a holiday club with the school that's Ofsted-registered, you can utilise this." Lewis also revealed he is "lobbying" to change the "hideously misnamed" scheme. He wants it changed to the Working families Childcare Top-Up, saying "it's framed much better" under the new name. He added that people on Universal Credit and working can claim childcare cost support as well. This rebate is worth up to 85% of the childcare cost working out as around £1000 for one child and almost £1,800 for two. This can be claimed through the parent's Universal Credit accounts. These financial tips come as a study has found parents will fork out thousands to save their children from boredom. A poll of 2,000 mums and dad with kids aged 17 and under found that parents will open their wallets to splash out on theme park and museum trips (£124/£127), as well as sports membership (£455). Additional expenses such as holiday camps (£136), cinema outings (£143), and toys and games (£152) also contribute to the substantial yearly total. On average, families embark on around four outings a month, amounting to high costs. However, 45% of parents admit they 'struggle' to keep their children entertained, with a staggering 62% feeling pressured to overspend. Nearly half (47%) of parents share the planning responsibilities with their children, while 39% largely leave the decision-making to their kids. A mere 10% of parents make the plans without any input from their offspring. The research was commissioned by electric vehicle manufacturer Leapmotor.

TSB said: "If you make 20 or more payments (of any value) per month using your debit card in the first six calendar months your Spend & Save account or Spend & Save Plus account is open (including the month your account is opened) and subject to meeting our cashback terms and conditions, we'll give you £15 cashback per month instead of £5. "This will appear as two payments on your transactions (£5 and £10) and may occur on different dates. We'll count your 20 payments based on the date the money is taken from your account.
