The Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to entertain a public interest litigation seeking direction to the Centre for the formation of a Gujjar regiment in the Indian Army . A bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela termed the PIL to be "absolutely divisive" and asked the counsel for the petitioner to do some research before taking up such petitions.Sensing the court's mood which warned of imposing costs on the litigant, the petitioner's counsel withdrew the plea."After arguing at some length, the counsel for the petitioner states that she has instructions from the petitioner who is present in the court to withdraw the petition. The same is dismissed as withdrawn," the bench said. The court was hearing a PIL by one Rohan Basoya, claiming that the Gujjar community has a well-documented history of bravery, having participated in various wars, including the 1857 revolt, Indo-Pak wars of 1947, 1965, 1971, Kargil war (1999) and counter insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir."Despite this rich martial legacy, they (Gujjars) have not been accorded a dedicated regiment, unlike other martial communities such as Sikhs, Jats, Rajputs, Gorkhas, and Dogras," the plea said.It added that the Indian Army has historically maintained ethnic-based regiments , recognising the contributions of specific communities to national defence. However, the exclusion of Gujjars from the system creates an imbalance in representation and violates their constitutional rights under Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution, the petition submitted. The plea submitted that establishment of a Gujjar regiment would provide equal opportunities, increase recruitment, and would strengthen national security "The demand for a Gujjar Regiment has been raised before, yet no concrete steps have been taken by the government. Given the community's presence in border regions like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh , Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Punjab, a Gujjar Regiment would also serve strategic military interests in counter-insurgency and border security operations ," it said. The plea sought to direct the government to conduct a study on the feasibility of forming a Gujjar regiment and to implement necessary measures for its establishment.During the hearing, the bench orally said, "Please understand that you are seeking a mandamus. What is the prerequisite for mandamus? There has to be a right vested in you either by any statute or any law or the Constitution. Which is the law which gives you a right to have such a regiment? Where is that right?"It asked the petitioner's counsel which provision of the Constitution or any other enactment or customary law gives the right to have a regiment of persons of a particular community.

Army ramps up trials of indigenous drones, loitering ammunition after Op Sindoor
After Operation Sindoor, the Army has intensified efforts to boost its air defence and battlefield readiness by testing a wide range of homegrown defence technologies. These include drones, loitering munitions, radar systems, and electronic warfare platforms -- all being put through rigorous trials at multiple field firing ranges across the Operation Sindoor, loitering munitions — unmanned aerial weapons that hover over an area before striking a target — were widely deployed, and hundreds of enemy drones from Pakistan were detected and neutralised by India's air defence the Army is building on those lessons by conducting field trials of indigenous systems at locations like Pokhran, Babina, and Joshimath, with dedicated air defence demonstrations underway in Agra and Gopalpur. These trials are designed to simulate real combat conditions, including the use of electronic warfare tools to assess how modern military systems perform under pressure. The platforms under evaluation include the unmanned aerial system, precision-guided munitions, drone systems that can fly without a runway, counter drone solutions, loitering munitions, drones with special vertical launch, precision multi-munition delivery systems, integrated drone detection and interdiction systems, light radars that work at low altitudes and electronic warfare to the Indian Army, all these state-of-the-art technologies are being tested keeping in mind the needs of the future battlefield. The aim is to rapidly adopt new technologies in accordance with the changing conditions of the field trials aim to evaluate new-age battlefield technologies under near-combat conditions, including integrated electronic warfare (EW) InTrending Reel

The Covid connection behind rising measles cases across the US
Post-Pandemic Drop in Vaccination Live Events Where Measles Is Spreading — and Why A Preventable Threat (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Measles cases are surging across the United States in 2025, and a new study from Johns Hopkins University pinpoints a clear reason: childhood vaccination rates have dropped significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic — especially in counties now facing active to the study published in JAMA this week, nearly 80% of more than 2,000 U.S. counties analyzed showed a decline in routine measles vaccination among children. These declines are particularly concerning because herd immunity against measles requires at least 95% vaccination coverage to prevent the highly contagious virus from spreading."In national-level data, the problem looks small. But when you zoom in, it becomes obvious that many communities are dangerously under-vaccinated," said Dr. Lauren Gardner, infectious disease modeler at Johns Hopkins and lead author of the study. Gardner also led the university's renowned COVID-19 data of early June, more than 1,000 measles cases have been reported nationwide — the highest total in decades — with three confirmed deaths. Experts warn that if the trend continues, 2025 could become the worst year for measles in over 30 Johns Hopkins study compared kindergarten vaccination rates from the 2017–2020 school years to those from 2022–2024, revealing sharp post-pandemic declines in many areas. In places where kindergarten data wasn't available, comparable statistics were measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, ongoing international and domestic travel, coupled with declining vaccination rates, has allowed the disease to schools generally require two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine before kindergarten. But non-medical exemptions have reached record highs in the 2023–2024 school year, weakening community is currently one of the hardest-hit states, with 742 cases since January, mostly in the western County, the state's epicenter, has 411 cases. Though its vaccination rate increased slightly after the pandemic, it still sits at 82.4%, well below the herd immunity County (60 cases) and Yoakum County (20 cases) both fell under 95% nearby Lubbock County (53 cases), the rate dropped from just below 95% to 91.8% after the El Paso County, with relatively high coverage at 96.5%, saw a 2.1-point is also facing outbreaks in counties where vaccination has County, with 25 cases, saw a dramatic fall from 94% to 71%.Haskell County dropped from 83% to 65%, while Stevens County declined slightly to 90.5%.In Colorado, a measles outbreak linked to an international flight has affected six County, home to two cases, saw vaccination decline to 88.4%.El Paso County, with three cases, dropped nearly four points to 80%.North Dakota data was only available from 2022 onward, but some counties have seen troubling County, where the outbreak began, rose to 87.7% in 2023 but dropped again to 83.5% in County remained steady at around 92.7%, while Grand Forks County fell from 95.4% to 93.4% — just under the herd immunity officials emphasize that measles is entirely preventable through vaccination. The MMR vaccine is safe, effective, and has been proven to protect against outbreaks for decades. Yet the post-pandemic decline in public trust and an increase in misinformation are reversing years of progress.(With AP Inputs)
