Local actor Ryan Lian revealed his grandmother, who raised him, died recently.
In an Instagram post on June 10, the 37-year-old wrote: "Recently, I had time on my hands and went wandering. For the past four months, I wandered the streets and experienced the warmth and coldness of the world.
"When I was at my hungriest, I ate huat kueh left out for prayer rituals. When I was caught in the rain, I wore the clothes given to me by passers-by. My grandmother also left the world during this time. I told her ice-cold body then that I will get treated for my illness and make a name for myself. When I succeed one day, I will do charity in her name."
He also thanked those who had helped him during this period, adding that because he knows how tough life could be, he strives to help the elderly and children in need when he is capable in the future.
Ryan ended his post with: "Singapore is rich, but in certain corners there are still many underprivileged families who worry about their meals every day." View this post on Instagram

Last September, Ryan was apprehended by the police under Section 7 of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act after he successfully opened the electronic lock of someone's flat at Telok Blangah Street 31. The resident had observed through her CCTV camera that he was shirtless and lingering at her door. He fiddled with the gate and successfully opened the electronic lock but left before opening the one on her main door.
He stayed in the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for five days after the incident and made a return in October, poking fun of himself in a cafe commercial uploaded on his social media accounts.
Netizens and celebrities including Ya Hui, Kenneth Chung and former actor Kang Chengxi wrote words of support and encouragement in the comments section of his latest post.
Ryan, who had appeared in local movies including Long Long Time Ago (2016), Ah Boys to Men 4 (2017) and King of Hawkers (2024), revealed in a podcast with singer-actor Kenji Ng last August that one of the "biggest causes" for his depression was his guilt towards his 90-year-old grandmother who had raised him for most of his life.
He revealed that the elderly woman had a stroke after Ryan threw his temper at her one night, but he only realised her condition the next morning when he found her crawling on the floor. The incident resulted in his severe depression in 2019 and he was unable to visit her after that.
Ryan also shared in the podcast that he had to place her in an elderly care home as she had dementia and he was unable to care for her. After living in a one-room flat with her for most of his life, he couldn't enjoy living with her when he was able to purchase his own flat, which left him feeling "unfilial" and "horrible".
In November, Ryan was slashed thrice on his face by an unknown man outside Nex Shopping Mall, causing him to suffer multiple lacerations and abrasions.
The 21-year-old assailant was charged in court the following day on one count of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to cause voluntary harm.
Ryan revealed to Shin Min Daily News then that his doctor had told him to be "mentally prepared" for scars on his face even when he recovers. He added that if his scars prevent him from acting, he will work behind the scenes instead.

HSA raids nightclub at Coleman Street for sale and use of illegal e-vaporisers, Singapore News

Tobacco enforcement officers from the the Health Sciences Authority's (HSA) raided Club Slim, a nightclub in Excelsior Shopping Centre at Coleman Street, on May 15 and uncovered an active trade in illegal e-vaporisers and related accessories. This comes as the authority steps up enforcement and continues to combat the unauthorised sale and use of e-vaporisers at nightlife establishments, it said in a statement on Friday (June 13). The club's manager admitted to selling e-vaporisers to staff members and HSA linked him to an illegal distribution network after they searched his vehicle and residence. The 45-year-old man is currently assisting the authority in investigations. Three men and two women aged between 22 and 40, who were patrons of the nightclub, were also found to have e-vaporisers and components in their possession. They were issued fines by the HSA on the spot. Under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act, the possession, use or purchase of e-vaporisers carries a maximum fine of $2,000. It is also an offence to import, distribute, sell or offer for sale prohibited tobacco products, such as e-vaporisers and their components under the Act. If convicted, first-time offenders may be fined up to $10,000, or jailed for up to six months, or both. The second or subsequent offences carry a fine of up to $20,000, or imprisonment of up to 12 month, or both. The HSA encouraged smokers who need help with quitting to call the Health Promotion Board's toll-free Quitline at 1800-438-2000. The authority has also urged members of the public who have information on the illegal import, distribution or sale of e-vaporisers to contact the Tobacco Regulation Branch at 6684 2036 or 6684 2037 during office hours. Over 17,900 people were caught for possession and use of e-vaporisers between January 2024 and March 2025. More than $41 million worth of e-vaporisers and components were seized and 50 successful operations were conducted against large-scale e-vaporiser syndicates by HSA during this period. Dua Lipa and Callum Turner are engaged, Entertainment News

Dua Lipa and Callum Turner are engaged. The Levitating singer's fans spotted she was wearing a diamond ring on her wedding finger in an Instagram post on Christmas Eve, and she's now confirmed the 35-year-old actor popped the question with a custom piece of jewellery he had made with the advice of her sister Rina and her best friends. Dua told the new issue of Britain's Vogue magazine: "Yeah, we're engaged. It's very exciting." Of her ring, she added: "I'm obsessed with it. It's so me. It's nice to know the person that you're going to spend the rest of your life with knows you very well." However, the couple — who began dating in January 2024 — have yet to set a wedding date because of their busy work schedules. Dua, 29, said: "I want to finish my tour, Callum's shooting, so we're just enjoying this period. "I've never been someone who's really thought about a wedding or dreamt about what kind of bride I would be. "All of a sudden, I'm like: 'Oh, what would I wear?'" Although Dua has seen people get engaged in the past, she had "never really understood the weight of it" but now she thinks committing to another person is "special". She said: "This decision to grow old together, to see a life and just, I don't know, be best friends forever — it's a really special feeling." The Dance the Night Away hitmaker is keen to have a family of her own but admitted she doesn't know when would be a "good time" because of the demands of her pop career. She said: "I'd love to have kids one day. But it's like the constant question of when would there ever be a good time — how it would fit in with my job and how it would work if I went on tour, and how much time out I'd have to take. "I think it's just one of those things that's going to happen when it happens. I love kids, but I think there's so much more to raising a child than just loving children." Dua and Callum had "many Sliding Doors moments", where they were in the same place at the same time without realising, before being introduced to one another at the River Cafe in London. A year later, she was having dinner in Los Angeles with her friend Mustafa the Poet when "all of a sudden" Callum appeared. She thought: "Oh, it's that really hot guy from The River Cafe." During their conversation, the pair realised they both "just happened to be reading" Hernan Diaz's novel Trust. Asked if she feels they were destined to be together, she replied: "One thousand per cent." [[nid:718976]]
