‘ChatGPT saved my mom': Woman reveals how AI diagnosed her mother's mysterious illness after 1.5 year struggle

A post on X has sparked widespread conversation about the potential of AI in healthcare. An X user named Shreya recently shared a powerful account of how ChatGPT, OpenAI's artificial intelligence chatbot, played a crucial role in identifying the likely cause behind her mother's mysterious and long-standing illness, something multiple medical systems had failed to do.
In a tweet that has now garnered thousands of likes and shares, Shreya wrote: 'My mom had a nonstop cough for 1.5 years. We saw top doctors, visited big hospitals in & out of the city, tried homoeopathy, ayurveda, allopathy, nothing helped. It got worse: internal bleeding started. Doctors said, 'If this goes on for 6 more months, it could be fatal.''
Desperate for answers, Shreya turned to ChatGPT, describing her mother's symptoms in detail. The AI chatbot suggested a list of possible causes, and among them, a blood pressure (BP) medication side effect stood out. When Shreya confirmed her mother was indeed on BP meds, ChatGPT asked a pointed follow-up:
'Is she on BP medication with this ingredient?'
To her surprise, the answer was yes.
Armed with this new insight, Shreya consulted their doctor, who immediately confirmed the link and changed the medication.
'Now she's finally healing,' Shreya wrote. 'Not exaggerating, but ChatGPT saved her life.'
She also thanked OpenAI and co-founder Sam Altman for creating what she called a 'great thing.'
A user commented, 'I'm really glad your mom is feeling better. But honestly, this also shows a big problem in medical care. Doctors should've checked if the cough was from her BP medicine, it's a known side effect. What's shocking isn't that ChatGPT figured it out, but that so many doctors missed something that should've been basic.'
Another user wrote, 'ChatGPT is indeed the first aid sort of help. It does tell u the real possibilities, unlike Google.'
'Wow! That's how the right usage of AI comes into place,' the third user wrote.
'Good that your mom got lucky, but I guess it will still take a few years for AI to reach to level where it will replace experts,' the fourth user wrote.
'Glad your mom is healing. Yes, AI can be great,' the fifth user wrote.

AFP A new and exciting tournament is being held to find out which AI model is the best at playing chess. The event is being organised by Kaggle Game Arena in partnership with Google DeepMind. It is called the AI Chess Exhibition Tournament, and is being held from August 5 to August 7. This special tournament will feature eight popular Large Language Models (LLMs) from top companies like Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and more. These models are not made for chess, but for other things like coding, writing, and answering questions. However, they now face each other on the chessboard. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The competing AIs and format Gemini 2.5 Pro (Google) Gemini 2.5 Flash (Google) o3 (OpenAI) o4-mini (OpenAI) Claude 4 Opus (Anthropic) Grok 4 (xAI, Elon Musk's company) DeepSeek R1 Kimi k2 (Moonshot AI) The tournament will follow a knockout format, which means one loss and the model is out. Based on how they play, the AIs will be ranked, and the results will be shared on and on Kaggle. American Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura is also covering the event on his Twitch handle. AI Chess Exhibition Tournament Day 1 results Day 1 of the Kaggle AI Chess Tournament saw dominant performances, with four models, OpenAI o4 mini, OpenAI o3, Gemini 2.5 Pro, and Grok 4, cruising into the semifinals with identical 4-0 wins. OpenAI's models impressed early, as both o4 mini and o3 swept past DeepSeek-R1 and Kimi K2 Instruct respectively. On the other side of the bracket, Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro outplayed Anthropic's Claude Opus 4, while xAI's Grok 4 defeated Gemini 2.5 Flash in a surprise result. In the semifinals on August 6, o4 mini will face o3, and Gemini 2.5 Pro will lock horns against Grok 4. The gold-medal match and bronze-medal match will be held on August 7. In 2017, Google's famous AI model AlphaZero shocked the world when it learned chess in just 4 hours and beat Stockfish, which is considered the world's best chess engine. But unlike AlphaZero, the current models are not made for chess as they are general-purpose language models. However, it will still be an interesting tournament to watch, as it will provide an answer to which AI model is the best at chess.

AI ( Artificial Intelligence ) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by computer systems. In MarTech , AI is used for personalisation, predictive analytics , automation and more. AI captured public imagination in recent times, when ChatGPT developed by OpenAI was launched as a "research preview" on November 30, 2022. Within a week, the world was talking about the development. However, the origins of Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be traced back to the mid-20th century, with its roots in mathematics, philosophy and computer science. While the idea of creating intelligent machines has been contemplated for centuries, the modern field of AI as an academic discipline began in the 1950s. The formal beginning of AI as a field of research is widely considered to be the Dartmouth Workshop in 1956. This summer conference, organised by John McCarthy, brought together leading researchers to discuss the possibility of creating "thinking machines." It was at this workshop that McCarthy coined the term "artificial intelligence." Before this pivotal event, several key figures laid the groundwork for the future of AI. Alan Turing, often called the "father of computer science," explored the concept of machine intelligence in his 1950 paper, "Computing Machinery and Intelligence". He proposed the Turing Test, a method for determining if a machine could exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from that of a human. In 1943, Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts published a paper that provided a mathematical description of how neurons in the brain might work, which was a crucial step toward the development of artificial neural networks. Arthur Samuel, a computer scientist at IBM, created a checkers program in the early 1950s that could learn from its own experience and improve its gameplay, a foundational example of machine learning. Following the Dartmouth Workshop, the field of AI experienced periods of rapid growth and setbacks, often referred to as "AI winters". The early years saw a great deal of optimism and progress. Researchers like Marvin Minsky, Allen Newell, and Herbert A Simon developed some of the first AI programs, including the Logic Theorist, which could solve mathematical theorems. The decade of the 1970s marked the first "AI winter," as funding and interest waned due to the failure of AI to deliver on its ambitious promises. In the 1980s, a resurgence of interest occurred with the rise of "expert systems," which were designed to mimic the decision-making of human experts in specific domains. From the 1990s, the emergence of machine learning approaches and the first major AI victories in games, such as IBM's Deep Blue defeating world chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997 were highlights in the progress of AI. The current "AI boom" has been fueled by the availability of vast amounts of data, increased computational power, and the development of deep learning techniques , particularly with the introduction of the transformer architecture in 2017, which has been instrumental in the creation of large language models like GPT. The public release of ChatGPT in late 2022 was a landmark moment, as it brought the power of this technology to a wide audience and sparked a massive surge of interest and investment in Generative AI .
