Hiedeman's heroics keep Lynx unbeaten in desert thriller

Hiedeman's heroics keep Lynx unbeaten in desert thriller originally appeared on Bring Me The News.
How good are the Minnesota Lynx? Good enough to go on the road and win without MVP candidate Napheesa Collier, who missed Friday night's game in Phoenix with knee soreness.
Without their star player, the Lynx found a way to stay in the game before striking like a snake in the desert with two big three-pointers in the final minute.
The first came from Courtney Williams to tie the game 71-71 with 53 seconds to go, and the kill shot came when Natisha Hiedeman buried a three with 5.1 seconds remaining.
'I passed Courtney the ball and then Courtney passed it to me and I'm wide open in the corner," Hiedeman said. "So I'm sitting there in my head, 'I'm like (exhale). This is for game right here, I got to knock this down.' that's what I did."
At 6-0, Minnesota is off to its best start since the 2017 team began the season 9-0.
Hiedeman finished with nine points and five rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench.
The Lynx were led by Kayla McBride's 20 points, while Alanna Smith scored 19 and Williams finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
It's unclear if Collier will miss any additional time, but head coach Cheryl Reeve said Collier didn't play due to soreness in her knee and she was held out as a precaution.
Up next: Lynx at Golden State, Sunday at 7:30 p.m. CT.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been NBA MVP-worthy, but his goals aren't complete

It's been a near-perfect season for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The 26-year-old led the NBA in scoring (32.7 points per game) for the league's best team in the regular season, earned All-Star and All-NBA First Team honors and was named MVP of the regular season and the Western Conference finals. The only milestones that remain are winning the Larry O'Brien Trophy and, potentially, the NBA Finals MVP. If he pulls it off, Gilgeous-Alexander would join Michael Jordan and Shaquille O'Neal as the only players in NBA history to win a championship, a scoring title, regular-season MVP and finals MVP in the same season. Advertisement On the latest episode of 'The Athletic NBA Daily,' Dave DuFour and Es Baraheni explored where Gilgeous-Alexander's season would rank among the greatest individual seasons in league history if the Oklahoma City Thunder finish the job and he takes home the finals MVP. They also discussed how his season might be viewed if the Thunder fall short in the finals, which players have had comparable seasons to the reigning MVP in the past and why Gilgeous-Alexander still has room to grow into even more of a dominant player. Later in the episode, DuFour and Baraheni were joined by The Athletic's Mike Vorkunov to explain why the Thunder-Indiana Pacers finals matchup could actually be a good thing for the league, despite being small-market teams. Vorkunov outlined how the NBA's long-term media rights deal has helped secure its financial health and why the rise of a new generation of stars is key for ratings. Additionally, the trio previewed the most intriguing elements of the finals matchup: which player could emerge as an X-factor in the series, whether Indiana's bench can hold up against Oklahoma City and the best way for the Pacers to attack the Thunder. Eagles Have One Question After Saquon Barkley Named Madden Cover Player

Eagles Have One Question After Saquon Barkley Named Madden Cover Player originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Throughout the 2024 regular season, the Philadelphia Eagles had one of the most explosive offenses, finishing the year ranked seventh in points per game (27.2) and eighth in total yards per game (367.2). Advertisement Of course, football is a team sport, but there's no doubt that much of their success was because of running back Saquon Barkley, who was eventually named the Offensive Player of the Year and finished third in MVP voting. After helping his team win the Super Bowl, his performance on the field was impossible to ignore and on Monday, EA Sports revealed that Barkley was named the cover athlete for Madden NFL 26, set to release on Aug. 14. The big announcement eventually drew a reaction from the Eagles, who asked, "Who else but @saquon?" via a social media post. It's a valid question, and after finishing the regular season with 2,005 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns and 33 receptions for two touchdowns, it would be hard to find a good answer. Advertisement Of course, those impressive numbers also led him to earn a two-year, $41.2 million extension with the Eagles, which makes him the highest-paid running back in NFL history in yearly salary ($20.6 million), per Spotrac. Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Hartline-Imagn Images This is also the second straight year that a running back has been featured as the video game's cover athlete, as San Francisco 49ers' Christian McCaffrey earned the honors for Madden NFL 25. Now, it will remain to be seen if Barkley and the Eagles can continue being dominant and live up to the hype in 2025, as ESPN BET ties them as the Kansas City Chiefs for the best odds (+600) to win the Super Bowl.
