Former Executive Says Ravens' Lamar Jackson Will Lead NFL in Passing

Former Executive Says Ravens' Lamar Jackson Will Lead NFL in Passing originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has long been one of the best quarterbacks in the sport. With one-of-one athleticism, an uncanny ability to find explosive plays out of structure, and tantalizing accuracy over the middle of the field, he is thoroughly among the pantheon of the NFL's elite. Advertisement That lends itself to hype and industry-wide respect from fans, analysts, players, and coaches. No serious person is doubting a two-time MVP at the peak of his powers. But it is important to tether expectations for his performance. Former Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson dropped his bold take about the Ravens' superstar on 'Good Morning Football,' suggesting that Jackson will lead the NFL in passing this season. "He's got Zay Flowers, he's got [DeAndre] Hopkins, he's got [Mark] Andrews, he's got [Isaiah] Likely, he's got [Offensive Coordinator] Todd Monken cooking up plays for him," Robinson said. "He's been an MVP in the past. They're knocking on the door of going to a Super Bowl." Robinson is right that Baltimore is well equipped to improve on offense and that a Super Bowl is very much within the range of outcomes. Leading the league in passing yards, though, feels like a bridge too far for Jackson – and that's probably for the best. Advertisement Since Jackson's meteoric rise in 2019, the following quarterbacks have been named the NFL's passing champion: 2019: Jameis Winston 2020: Deshaun Watson 2021: Tom Brady 2022: Patrick Mahomes 2023: Tua Tagovailoa 2024: Joe Burrow Winston's 30-touchdown, 30-interception season was as productive as it was chaotic, a statistical anomaly defined by unrelenting aggression. Watson led the league on a 4-12 team that needed to find explosive plays to feign competitiveness. Brady and Mahomes are inner-circle Hall-of-Fame-level pocket passers. Tagovailoa's offense supplanted the run game by funneling passers to the sport's most explosive receiving corps, and Burrow's defense demanded he perform like an MVP for much of the season. Jackson is never going to produce in the risk-laden ways that Winston did. The Ravens, and by extension, their defense, should be good enough to block the paths Watson and Burrow took to the top of the leaderboard. As far as Brady and Mahomes go, Jackson is similarly potent, but does so much more of his work on the ground. That's what makes Baltimore's offense special, and not an indictment of his talent. If Jackson had to stand in the pocket and deliver, maybe a 4,500-yard season would be in store. But with how important his legs are to creating explosive plays that's not going anywhere any time soon. Advertisement Further, Baltimore, by design, throws the ball infrequently. According to nfelo, the Ravens have posted a negative pass rate over expectation in every year since Jackson became the full-time starter. With about half the league boasting better odds at various sportsbooks, Jackson is a longshot to make good on Robinson's prediction. We won't put anything past the NFL's most electric player, but Jackson's success on the ground and the scoreboard make passing titles a race for other quarterbacks to run. NBA's talks about new league in Europe are continuing, though the process remains in early stages

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The NBA's talks with FIBA and other entities about the process of adding a new league in Europe are continuing, Commissioner Adam Silver said, though he noted that it may take at least a couple more years to turn the ideas into reality. Silver spoke at a league event to unveil a refurbished Boys & Girls Club in Oklahoma City on Friday — an off day for the NBA Finals — and said it's difficult to put a specific timeline on the Europe plans. 'I will say it's measured in years, not months,' Silver said. 'So, we're at least a couple years away from launching. It would be an enormous undertaking. And while we want to move forward at a deliberate pace, we also want to make sure that we're consulting with all the appropriate stakeholders, meaning the existing league, its teams, European players, media companies, marketing partners. There's a lot of work to be done.' Silver and FIBA secretary general Andreas Zagklis announced in March that the league and the game's governing body are finally taking long-awaited steps to form a new league, with an initial target of 16 teams. It had been talked about for years, and decades even on some levels. And since the NBA and FIBA went public with their idea to move forward, talks have gotten more constructive, Silver said. Silver said the NBA has been talking directly with the EuroLeague and with some member clubs about a partnership. It's his preference that the NBA work with the existing league on some level, though it's still too early to say exactly what that means. 'Either way, we continue to feel there are an enormous number of underserved basketball fans in Europe and that there's a strong opportunity to have another league styled after the NBA,' Silver said. About one in every six current NBA players hails from Europe, including Denver's Nikola Jokic (Serbia) and Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece) — who have combined for five of the last seven MVP awards — along with the Los Angeles Lakers' Luka Doncic (Slovenia) and San Antonio's Victor Wembanyama (France). The NBA's board of governors will talk more about next steps with the European plans in July at their scheduled meeting in Las Vegas, Silver said. It's possible that the European venture could be unveiled in some way — or possibly start — around the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, just given how much attention will be on international basketball at that time. 'That might be a good launching pad for an announcement around a new competition,' Silver said. Some of the cities that are expected to have interest in being part of the new venture include London, Manchester, Rome and Munich. There will be others, of course. 'We haven't had direct conversations yet,' Silver said. 'But there have been several organizations that have come forward and said they would be interested and potential owners in operating in those major markets in Europe.' ___ AP NBA:

Is Lionel Messi deserving of MVP?

Yahoo Sports contributors Christian Polanco and Alexis Guerreros discuss whether or not Lionel Messi is deserving of MLS MVP and highlight Tai Baribo as another strong candidate. Hear the full conversation on the 'The Cooligans' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript For the midseason, it feels a little weird to pick Messi because he hasn't really, he he didn't do what he did last season. Advertisement They've had really long stretches. uh, he, he has had really long stretches without like goal contributions. So it's odd because last season he missed a lot of games through injuries, still won MVP, but this season he is playing in those games and he's not getting all the stats. Yeah, but. We have to decide what do we mean by valuable. Valuable to the team, valuable to the league, valuable as in he's in the league and so the fans are watching, valuable in the sense that when he's on the pitch, defenders are drawn to him naturally, and he creates space for everyone else. To me it just doesn't make sense to say anyone other than Messi, and I don't care if people think like, oh, attack or whatever, he's just valuable in every shape or every time. Advertisement Camera hits him, I hear cha ching. So as far as I'm concerned, he's the most. Yeah, there's not much we can do to change your mind if that's gonna be your barometer. I understand the argument for someone else. Who do you have? Uh, I have Tyribo. 13 goals, 1 assist. Uh, yeah, the numbers are better for uh for Messi, but It it it's looking like just moving forward, uh, that he's just gonna be um an important part to almost every single goal that is scored by the Philadelphia Union, and I, I had seen him on pace to what, like scored 30 to like to break the record, right? He's got a goal per start. Sure, yeah, I think they were asking him like, well, like how many, how many goals do you have it like in mind every every season? Advertisement And he's like, I have a I have a there's a certain amount of goals I have in mind. And they're like, alright, well how many is it? He's like, I'm not telling you it's just it's just like a little just a little secret personal number, um, but, but he's been fantastic.
