Delhi commuters can now buy metro tickets on Uber app powered by ONDC
New Delhi [India], May 19 (ANI): Uber on Monday announced the rollout of metro ticketing on the Uber app, powered by the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). Delhi Metro will be the first launch city.
Starting today, Uber users in the national capital can now plan their metro journeys, purchase QR-based tickets, and access real-time transit information - all within the Uber app.
According to Uber, this marks the first integration with India's pioneering digital public infrastructure and a major step forward in making public transport more connected.
Uber, in a statement, said that three more cities across India are slated to go live in 2025.
This integration follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2024 during Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi's visit to India, where Uber committed to collaborating with ONDC to advance the reach and impact of India's digital public goods.
Today's launch is a tangible realisation of that commitment, reinforcing Uber's mission to make urban mobility more inclusive, sustainable, and seamlessly connected.
Speaking at the launch, Praveen Neppalli Naga, Chief Technology Officer, Uber, said ' India has taken an impressive leap in building population scale technology through its Digital Public Infrastructure like ONDC and we are thrilled to integrate with them to bring metro ticketing to the Uber app, bringing us one step closer to our vision of being a one-stop shop for mobility needs.'
'Working with ONDC has pushed us to reimagine how private innovation can plug into public platforms to deliver seamless, smart solutions and we are just getting started,' the CTO said.
Vibhor Jain, Acting CEO and COO at ONDC, said, 'Uber's joining of the ONDC Network marks a significant step in expanding access to trusted, interoperable digital infrastructure in India. As a global platform, Uber's initial enablement of metro ticketing and logistics unlocks new possibilities - from seamless multimodal journeys to unifying a fragmented logistics ecosystem.'
'This collaboration lays the foundation for future innovations from Uber on the Network, enhancing value for users, partners, and the broader mobility and services landscape,' Jain said.
Uber said it will soon launch B2B Logistics via the ONDC network, a solution that will allow businesses to request on-demand logistics from Uber's delivery network, without needing their own fleet.
Uber said the service will initially facilitate food deliveries, with its underlying technology designed to scale to sectors such as e-commerce, grocery, pharmacy, and healthcare logistics.
'By integrating with ONDC, Uber will be accessible to a wide ecosystem of sellers and platforms, empowering businesses of all sizes to reach more customers efficiently through a plug-and-play logistics layer,' Uber said. (ANI)

India poised to become 3rd largest manufacturing hub: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi
Dharwad (Karnataka) [India], June 8 (ANI): Union Minister for Consumer Affairs and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi on Sunday expressed strong confidence that India is on track to transform into a global manufacturing hub, citing the country's supportive environment, abundant resources, and dynamic youth. Speaking at the inauguration of the 3rd Greenfield Unit and Sri Rama Temple built by Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited in Belur Industrial Area in Dharwad, Joshi highlighted India's unprecedented growth in manufacturing under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and its emergence as a self-reliant nation across sectors and its potential to become the world's third-largest producer, surpassing challenges faced in 2014. 'India will transform into a global manufacturing hub in the future, as it has a supportive environment, resources and an empowered youth that is required for the manufacturing sector,' the Union Minister stated. 'Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is achieving unprecedented growth in the manufacturing sector today. India today is self-reliant in everything from industry, jobs, education, information technology, transport, and electricity. The import situation that existed in 2014 is no longer there. It is developing as the largest exporting country in the world. Until now, China and Vietnam were the only leading producing countries in the world. Now, India has also joined that list and will emerge as the 3rd largest producer,' he added. Joshi noted the global demand for Indian talent, particularly in Germany, as the country leverages its vibrant youth and resources. 'Today, there is a high demand for Indian youth all over the world, including Germany. Due to the shortage of loyal, educationally qualified employees and technicians, foreign countries are turning to India. India has amazing opportunities in every way, including its vibrant and dynamic youth, resources, and environment, and locals should also take advantage of this,' he stated. Abhijit Khanvilkar, Director of Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited, highlighted local opportunities, stating, 'Skilled human resources were available in Dharwad, but not enough job opportunities were available. We initially set up a unit in Dharwad, which has grown to three units, creating job opportunities for up to 500 persons.' Following the inauguration of the greenfield unit, Joshi also inaugurated the Lord Sri Rama Temple there. Earlier, NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam had said that India's manufacturing sector must grow 15 per cent annually to contribute at least 25 per cent to the country's GDP (or USD 7.5 trillion) through Viksit Bharat 2047. According to Joshi, the greenfield unit would help boost industrial growth in the region of North Karnataka and contribute to local employment generation and economic growth. In a post on X, Johsi added that Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited was committed to sustainability and has inaugurated a 155 kWp rooftop solar power plant at its Pune unit, aimed at reducing the company's carbon footprint. He noted that the Dharwad unit had also adopted eco-friendly measures. 'Moments from the inauguration of the Lord Sri Ram Temple and its third greenfield unit built by Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited at Belur Industrial Area, Dharwad, today. This greenfield unit in Dharwad will boost industrial growth in North Karnataka. It will contribute to local employment generation and economic growth. Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited is committed to sustainability and has inaugurated a 155 kWp rooftop solar power plant at its Pune unit. This will promote the use of renewable energy with the aim of reducing the company's carbon footprint. The Dharwad unit has also adopted such eco-friendly measures and has ISO 14001 Environmental Management Certification,' Joshi stated in a post on X. The Union Minister was accompanied by former MLA Amrut Desai, former MLC Nagaraj Chhabbi and Abhijeet Khanwilkar, Director of Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited, among others. (ANI)

Kathua (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 8 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated the Kathua Waterfront, a transformative urban rejuvenation project, on Sunday, dedicating it to the people of Kathua as a space for recreation, wellness, and community engagement. The 1,200-metre stretch along the Kathua Canal is designed to reshape the city's landscape, economy, and social fabric while promoting sustainability and women's empowerment. LG Sinha emphasised that the project aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for urban transformation, calling it a 'foundation for a strong future' that balances development with cultural identity. LG Manoj Sinha said, 'I thank all the contributors to this project, which has been completed under Corporate Social Responsibility. I believe we should not view such developments just like other key infrastructure projects-- a waterfront or riverfront, they enhance the quality of life for people. This project holds significance for Kathua's economic, social, and cultural development. The 1200-metre-long waterfront offers a multifunctional public space--featuring walking, skating, and cycling tracks, a yoga spot, and provision for 15 restaurants.' 'It has also generated direct and indirect employment opportunities for local residents,' he added. The project has already provided direct employment to 150 individuals, with a significant number being women. 'This initiative not only rejuvenates the city but also empowers our Nari Shakti,' Sinha said. He urged other cities to compete in improving citizens' quality of life, saying, 'Smart cities need smart and responsible citizens.' Sinha expressed satisfaction with Jammu's infrastructure growth but called for continued efforts to modernise towns and villages. 'Every city has a soul. It nurtures aspirations. We must ensure balanced development,' he said. The LG also launched the Integrated Command and Control Centre and flagged off a bicycle rally to mark the occasion. Earlier in the day, Manoj Sinha had launched a scathing attack on Pakistan, accusing the neighboring country of attempting to 'destabilise Jammu and Kashmir's economy, divide people on religious lines, and damage its tourism sector,' even as he laid the foundation stone of a Rs 1,240 crore industrial unit in Kathua. Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], June 8 (ANI): The MSC IRINA, recognised as the world's largest container ship by TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) capacity, will dock at the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on Monday morning and will be berthed until Tuesday. This monumental arrival marks a significant milestone for the seaport, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation on May 2. The MSC IRINA boasts an impressive capacity of 24,346 TEUs, making it a formidable player in global shipping. With a length of 399.9 metres and a width of 61.3 metres, the vessel is approximately four times longer than a standard FIFA-designated football field. Explicitly designed to facilitate the transportation of large volumes of containers between Asia and Europe, the MSC IRINA is pivotal in enhancing trade routes and logistics efficiency. This vessel will be visiting a South Asian port, highlighting Vizhinjam's capabilities in handling Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs). The port has recently welcomed other Icon-class vessels, including MSC Turkiye and MSC Michel Cappellini, further establishing its reputation as a key hub in maritime trade. The MSC IRINA was launched in March 2023 and embarked on its maiden voyage in April of the same year. It sails under the Liberian flag and is engineered to stack containers up to 26 tiers high, offering unparalleled capacity in container stacking. Notably, the MSC IRINA surpasses its predecessor, OOCL Spain, by a margin of 150 TEUs. In alignment with contemporary environmental standards, the vessel is equipped with energy-saving features that contribute to reducing carbon emissions by up to 4 per cent, significantly lowering its carbon footprint while maintaining operational efficiency. The docking of the MSC IRINA at Vizhinjam International Seaport not only underscores the port's strategic importance in global shipping but also represents a leap forward in sustainable maritime practices, setting a benchmark for future developments in the industry.
