Scots couple stuck at Edinburgh Airport over Israel-Iran conflict

Their flight, originally scheduled to depart Edinburgh at 15.10 PM, has now been rescheduled for 8 AM on Thursday, which means the couple will not arrive home in Perth until late on Friday evening.
Qatari airspace was closed yesterday after Iran fired missiles at a US military base.
Stewart told The Herald: 'We went to the airport this morning, and there was no indication that anything was wrong. We found out it was cancelled when we went to the check-in desk.
'We had already left the house and hired a car. Now we aren't flying back to the 26th in the early morning, and we have a eight hour stopover in Doha. I'm going to have to tell my boss I won't be able to work this week.
'If the situation in Qatar is a war zone, why do we have a stopover there?'

Stewart, who was visiting family in Dunfermline, added: 'I'm not happy. I booked these seats months ago in good faith. Tickets from Australia this time of year are not cheap. I paid $2700 AUD for them, plus extra for legroom.
'They didn't even offer us a hotel. They're clearly using the crisis to get out of the situation. It's typical of airlines.'
A spokesperson for Qatar Airways said: "Our teams are working with focus and care to support passengers following the re-opening of airspace in the State of Qatar.
"We are in the process of restoring our global network of more than 170 destinations and are assisting all affected passengers with rebooking and support as quickly as possible.
"As we manage the resumption of operations, we continue to respond in real time to operational developments, with additional staff deployed at Doha Hamad International Airport and key locations across our network to provide on-the-ground assistance.
Qatar Airways flights have been disrupted. The spokesperson added: "We thank our passengers for their patience, understanding, and continued trust as we work to ensure you reach your destination with minimal further disruption, as well as our partners for their support.

I flew on the world's best airline – the 5-star flight had lie-flat seats, touch screens & all-day dining

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) EVERYONE loves a bit of 5-star luxury. But you may not know that 5-star luxury isn't restricted to the city or the beach – you'll also find 5-star luxury in the sky. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 Flight offers food that could come straight from a Michelin-starred restaurant 3 Qatar really covers all bases Credit: Alamy 3 Then there's the business class amenity kit - a Diptyque kit no less It's not easy to find though. There are only 10 5-star airlines in the world and it just so happens I was flying on one of them – Qatar Airways. Not only are they in the top 10 they're top – the World's Best Airline. Best of the best. What a treat. Qatar was the first airline I ever flew business on some 20 years ago and I was blown away by it. So I was really hoping standards would be just as high on my two-leg trip to Vietnam. My first leg was taking me from Edinburgh to Qatar's hub in Doha in business class on an Airbus A350. All of the seats are lie-flat and feature a touch screen to enjoy an endless list of movies, games and music…as well as a handheld device if you fancy multi-tasking. And if you're worried about having no wifi then worry no more. Another first for Qatar is their Starlink wifi service. They were one of the first airlines to roll out the fastest wifi in the sky. And, even better, it's free to ALL passengers in ALL cabins. Then there's the business class amenity kit - a Diptyque kit no less. And you're given quite a comfy set of White Company PJs to get changed into when you're ready to stretch out for a sleep. The plane on the second leg even featured a cool little sliding door which gave me privacy as I slept. But before sleep, food must be had. The dining options are well, whatever you fancy. It's an all-day dining concept which means you can eat what you want when you want. I'd chosen seared prawns with mango salad washed down with a glass of Whispering Angel. Utterly divine. I followed that up with roasted grouper and mustard sauce. So delicious. How they make food like that for a flight really is beyond me. But what else would you expect from the best airline in the world! I skipped the cheese and the dessert because, well, there's just not enough hours to eat, drink, watch movies and sleep. The lie-flat seats stretch out into an alcove created by the seat in front, giving maximum stretching space. Throw in some lovely pillows, a luxurious velvet duvet and a comfy mattress it's a very pleasant sleeping experience. And you don't even have to make the bed up. The flight attendants are on it the minute you get up to change into your PJs. GO: VIETNAM GETTING THERE: Flights with Qatar Airways from Edinburgh to Hanoi cost £648pp in economy and £3,356pp in business. See Landing at Doha was a real experience as I was greeted straight off the plane by a Qatar staff member who whisked me away in a cart to the Transit security area before being personally escorted to their new Al Mourjan lounge. VIP stuff. The lounge is so big that even when busy, it doesn't seem busy. And it has the perfect view of the jungle-like concourse below. Doha airport is, simply put, one of the most beautiful airports I've ever seen. Who knew airports could feel so idyllic. The second leg was much the same as the first. You know how it goes, lovely big comfy lie-flat seats, food that could come straight from a Michelin-starred restaurant, enough entertainment to keep you busy for a round-the-world flight and, above all else, impeccable service. Qatar really has covered all bases. And after such a joyful travelling experience you could say I was more than a little five-star struck!

Heathrow warns of slowdown in travel from America

Heathrow has warned that economic uncertainty unleashed by Donald Trump's trade war has sparked a slowdown in travel from the United States. In an update to investors, Europe's busiest airport said it is beginning to see indications of a drop in bookings on transatlantic routes most favoured by business travellers. Heathrow said that while demand among Britons for leisure flights to the US remains strong, it has 'observed some early signs of softness on business-heavy routes'. It added: 'The impact of the economic uncertainty across North America has made this market more challenging so we are maintaining a close watching brief on traffic trends.' Heathrow's comments suggest that demand in the world's biggest corporate and premium travel market is beginning to be undermined by Mr Trump's trade war and its impact on business confidence. They said that while transatlantic routes continue to represent a core strength of the network it serves, there is an 'overhanging uncertainty' about how well they will hold up going into the summer peak. Slight recovery However, US passenger volumes still increased from January through May compared with a year earlier, it said, while cargo volumes jumped amid increased trade activity ahead of the president's liberation day tariffs announcement in April. British Airways (BA) has previously reported softer ticket sales for its economy class cabins on flights from the US, though Luis Gallego, chief executive of parent company International Airlines Group, said this month that demand was recovering. Virgin Atlantic also said in March that it was seeing a lower level of bookings made in the US, with a few weeks where it had turned negative. Heathrow predicted that passenger numbers will increase 0.5pc this year to 84.2m, while warning of a 3pc drop in operating profits as it absorbs the impact of the Government's National Insurance tax raid. Thomas Woldbye, Heathrow's chief executive, said punctuality at the airport has improved to the best level among European hubs, while almost 97pc of passengers were now clearing security in less than five minutes. Mr Woldbye had faced criticism over service standards from Heathrow Reimagined, a lobby group that includes BA and Virgin and is demanding a reset of the charging mechanism for flying from the airport ahead of the construction of a third runway. It is seeking the establishment of a new body that will give airlines more say over infrastructure spending, and a move to competition between Heathrow's terminals. The Civil Aviation Authority will set out the scope of a review of the charging system as early as next week.
