Man United's Rashford eyes fresh start as Barcelona loan move nears completion

Malay Mail21-07-2025
LONDON, July 21 — Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is in Spain to finalise a season-long loan move to Barcelona.
The 27-year-old arrived in Catalonia on Sunday night after receiving permission from United to complete the transfer formalities, BBC reported
Images showing Rashford disembarking from a private jet in Barcelona quickly spread across social media platforms.
Negotiations between the Spanish club and United accelerated last week, culminating in a deal being agreed in principle over the weekend.
United have now formally approved Rashford's move, which will see him join Barcelona on a 12-month loan with an option to buy.
Rashford has been eyeing a move to Barcelona since December, when he signalled his desire for a new challenge after being dropped by head coach Ruben Amorim.
This will be Rashford's second loan spell in a year, following a six-month stint with Aston Villa in the second half of last season.
He is expected to undergo a medical in Spain early this week and may join Barcelona's pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea, where he could face former United team-mate Jesse Lingard, now at FC Seoul.

De Minaur digs deep to stun Davidovich Fokina, wins DC Open in comeback thriller

WASHINGTON, July 28 — Australia's Alex De Minaur saved three match points on his way to a battling 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (7/3) victory over Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to clinch the ATP Tour DC Open crown on Sunday. Seventh seed De Minaur looked to be heading for defeat against his 12th-seeded Spanish opponent after trailing 5-2 in the deciding set in Washington. But Davidovich Fokina — chasing the first ATP title of his career after losing in three previous final appearances — failed to capitalise on his hefty lead. The Spaniard appeared to tighten when serving for the match at 5-3 up to allow De Minaur to claw it back to 5-4. But Davidovich Fokina responded to that missed opportunity by then earning three match points on De Minaur's serve in the next game. Yet once again, the Spaniard was unable to take advantage and De Minaur survived to hold serve and level the match at 5-5. The next two games went on serve to set up the tie break and De Minaur was quickly in control, sealing victory on the first of three match points with an ace, to settle a 3hr 2mins slugfest. De Minaur said he had never doubted his ability to turn around the final. 'I just kind of knew I could do it,' De Minaur said in his on-court interview. 'I just backed myself to commit no matter what, and if I lost this match, it was going to be on my terms. 'I've had a couple of brutal ones not go go my way, so I'm glad this one went my way,' the 26-year-old from New South Wales said. The win was another agonizing setback for Davidovich Fokina, who had already reached — and lost — two other finals this season. The defeat echoed his loss in the final at Delray Beach in February, when he was unable to convert two match points before losing to Miomir Kecmanovic. 'Congratulations to Alex, he deserved the win,' Davidovich Fokina said. 'He was fighting for every ball. He always pushed me to my limits.' — AFP

Rashford debuts for Barcelona in 3-1 Japan win after match reinstated

KOBE, July 28 — Marcus Rashford made his first appearance for Barcelona in a 3-1 pre-season win over J. League side Vissel Kobe in Japan on Sunday, coming on as a substitute. The English forward joined the Spanish champions on loan from boyhood club Manchester United this week and was thrust into action against Kobe in the second half. Barcelona had initially cancelled the match on Wednesday, citing unspecified 'serious contractual breaches on behalf of the promoter'. But the friendly went ahead and Eric Garcia opened the scoring in the first half for the visitors before Taisei Miyashiro equalised for the J. League team that retired Barca star Andres Iniesta once played for. Barcelona coach Hansi Flick changed his line-up at half-time and new signing Roony Bardghji restored their lead in the 77th minute. Pedro Fernandez added a third in the 87th minute. Barcelona are paying around 75 per cent of Rashford's £325,000 (RM1.8 million)-a-week wage while he is at the club, with the player foregoing the rest, according to Spanish reports. The 27-year-old England international was out of favour under United coach Ruben Amorim and spent the final months of the 2024/25 season on loan at Aston Villa. — AFP

Late Odegaard penalty seals Arsenal's 3-2 win over Newcastle in Singapore pre-season clash

SINGAPORE, July 28 — Martin Odegaard scored the winner from the spot in the 84th minute as Arsenal beat Newcastle 3-2 in a pre-season friendly in Singapore on Sunday. Viktor Gyokeres, the Swedish international striker signed on Saturday from Sporting Lisbon, was introduced to the crowd of more than 38,700 before kickoff. He watched from the bench as his new club won an entertaining encounter in the Singapore heat. The 27-year-old could make his debut when Arsenal take on Tottenham in Hong Kong next Thursday in another friendly. 'We are increasing the quality of the squad all the time, so we're super happy to have Viktor with us,' said manager Mikel Arteta. 'It has been a long journey to get him here.' Newcastle, who were missing striker Alexander Isak as he considers his future, scored with their first attack in the sixth minute. New signing Anthony Elanga blasted the ball into the bottom corner after meeting a cross from Sandro Tonali. But Arsenal overcame a shaky start, regaining their rhythm and control of the game. Mikel Merino levelled in the 33rd minute from Kai Havertz's flick. Arsenal were ahead two minutes later when defender Alex Murphy fumbled the ball into his own net. The Magpies almost conceded a third after the restart but had keeper Nick Pope to thank after he stopped a bicycle kick by Bukayo Saka. Against the run of play, substitute Jacob Murphy levelled for Newcastle a minute later after his shot from outside the box sneaked past David Raya. With the match seemingly headed for a draw, it was 15-year-old Max Dowman's deep run into the box, where he was clipped by Joelinton, that proved to be the game-changer. Odegaard made no mistake from the spot to give Arsenal their second win in Singapore following a 1-0 victory over AC Milan. 'Playing against Newcastle today wasn't just a friendly. It was a real test,' said Arteta. 'It gave us the chance to raise our competitiveness and physical level. There are still things we need to work on, like how we compete, understand our positions and show the willingness to win.' — AFP
