Florida lawmakers fund another $1.7 billion in I-4 construction projects

Yahoo10-06-2025
Florida is taking additional steps to speed up congestion relief along the I-4 tourist corridor.
Last week lawmakers voted to expedite the construction of two express lanes on I-4's busiest stretch in Osceola and Polk Counties and a separate road project that will better connect I-4 to the rest of Osceola County's transportation network.
The joint legislative budget commission approved $1.7 billion for the three road projects.
'This week's LBC vote allows funds to move into the current Fiscal Year to ensure FDOT is able to move as swiftly as possible with their delivery,' said Molly Best, a spokesperson for the Governor's office, in an email.
The road projects include two express lanes in each direction on a 2.6-mile stretch from east of World Drive to east of U.S. 192 and a 3.1-mile stretch from east of County Road 532 to west of World Drive. The third project is construction of a new 3.5-mile road called the Poinciana Connector. That road will link State Road 429 to the southern portion of Osceola Polk Line Road and connect to I-4.
The Central Florida Expressway Authority is planning another road project to connect to the Poinciana Connector, eventually creating a southern highway loop that will ease access throughout Osceola County to I-4. That will involve extending Poinciana Parkway and connecting it to County Road 532.
Construction on improvements to surrounding county roads to facilitate this project are scheduled to begin in early 2026, said CFX spokesperson Brian Hutchings in an email.
'This effort aims to increase capacity and enhance connectivity between the future extension of Poinciana Parkway and I-4,' Hutchings said. 'Through close coordination with regional partners, we are delivering a comprehensive transportation solution designed to improve mobility, enhance regional connectivity, and provide lasting traffic relief for our growing community.'
Poinciana, an unincorporated part of Osceola County that borders Polk County, has ballooned in population in recent years, and so has traffic.
'We appreciate the continued support of the Florida Legislature and Governor Ron DeSantis in delivering landmark investments through the Florida Department of Transportation's Moving Florida Forward initiative, bringing real congestion relief to some of Osceola County's most vital transportation corridors,' Osceola County spokesperson Tyler Winik said in an email.
The Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative aims to bring congestion relief across the state through a series of projects. Roughly $2.5 billion of the initiative will overhaul I-4 and it's moving quickly.
Various improvements along a 14-mile stretch of I-4, including these three projects, were already slated to be completed in ten years —faster than the original estimate of 25 years — and with this $1.7 billion boost key portions should be delivered in less time.
The funding comes on the heels of April's announcement that two new lanes on a six-mile stretch of I-4 were added eight months ahead of schedule.
FDOT did not respond to request for comment on the latest development.

Si2 Announces Creation of the Si2 LLM Benchmarking Coalition

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Silicon Integration Initiative (Si2) announced today the creation of the LLM benchmarking coalition (LBC) to expedite the development of high-quality large language models (LLMs) for semiconductor design problems. Si2 also announced that NVIDIA is joining as a founding member of the new coalition and that the coalition will build on the company's open-source Comprehensive Verilog Design Problems (CVDP) benchmark that provides an LLM evaluation framework for LLMs used for Register-transfer level (RTL) design and verification problems. The Si2 Large Language Model Benchmarking Coalition is one of four Coalitions supported by Si2, a not-for-profit member organization whose members innovate on trusted standards and share solutions that lower development costs and increase design productivity. The Si2 LLM Benchmarking Coalition's corporate and academic members will build upon the RTL design and verification benchmarks provided in CVDP by extending problems to cover new categories and design domains, monitoring a leaderboard of results, refining benchmarking methods and metrics, and providing an interpretation of the results. Leigh Anne Clevenger, Si2 vice president of technology, said, 'The motivation for LBC came from the 2024 IEEE International Workshop on LLM-Aided Design (LAD'24) which highlighted a lack of benchmarks to evaluate the quality-of-results for Verilog for hardware design. Many current Si2 AI/ML in EDA SIG member companies and universities plan to participate, with experts already providing important input for enhancing and expanding the benchmarks in CVDP to make it an industry and academia-wide effort.' Robert Aslett, Si2 CEO, stated, 'We are excited about the very positive reaction received during initial discussions with representatives from several semiconductor companies and academic institutions. We are now in the process of signing up members of the coalition.' Learn more about Si2 and becoming a member of the LLM Benchmarking Coalition by visiting Si2 or Si2 contact.

Nigel Farage's Vision For A Reform UK Government Leaves Everyone Scratching Their Heads

Nigel Farage's vision for what a cabinet led by Reform UK has stunned the internet over the last 24 hours. The MP for Clacton, who was only successfully elected to parliament on his eighth attempt, has claimed it's 'ridiculous' to fill the government with elected officials. Speaking to LBC on Thursday, he suggested putting successful business leaders in charge of the country instead. 'The way we run our country is ridiculous,' he said. 'We put cabinet ministers in charge of departments over which they have absolutely zero knowledge. 'They'll often last in that job for 12-18 months – barely time to get their feet under the table and understand the brief.' He claimed the UK is stuck in the mindset that the cabinet must all be politicians in the House of Commons. Farage said: 'Why? Why? Look at America. Scott Bessent has come in as the US Treasury secretary. Never stood for election in his life, but a very, very successful businessman.' Farage refused to name anyone he might want in his own cabinet, but said senior ministers would not have to be an MP at all. 'I do think, I really mean this, that you've got to think a little bit more about running the public finances as if you're running a business,' he claimed. This suggestion went down like a lead balloon on social media. Many critics could not help but point out that it sounded like Farage wanted to install 'unelected bureaucrats' into positions of power. Others questioned how the public are meant to hold such figures accountable unless they can vote them out. It's a fairly fundamental democratic principle. — Kevin Schofield (@KevinASchofield) July 4, 2025 He's already saying that he wouldn't trust his own MPs to be ministers. He currently has 4. — Mark Jenkinson 🇬🇧 (@markjenk) July 3, 2025 — Colin the Dachshund (@DachshundColin) July 3, 2025 Because cabinet ministers are accountable to parliament, which approves (or not) the spending of our money. — Iain Martin (@iainmartin1) July 3, 2025 Man who campaigned against Bureucratic European technocracy for 3 decades now believes Britain should adopt the same system — Liberite🔶 🇪🇺 👩🏼💼 (@brownliberite) July 3, 2025 Reform UK is currently leading in the polls by a healthy margin, and is even on track to secure Downing Street in the next election according to YouGov's latest mega-survey. However, many of the party's policies have already been torn apart. Minister Sarah Jones told HuffPost UK that Farage's plan to ditch Net Zero was a 'con', while a tax expert said Reform's idea of offering a major tax break to the wealthy would cost the government £34 billion. ‘Well-known' figures want to join Reform UK cabinet, Farage claims

A Reform UK cabinet could include people from outside Parliament, Nigel Farage has said. During an LBC phone-in on Thursday, the Reform UK leader said it was 'nonsense' that ministers 'must all be politicians in the House of Commons' and suggested following the US example where cabinet members have often never stood for election. He said: 'I really mean this, I do think that you've got to think a little bit more about running the public finances as if you're running a business.' Asked if there were any names he was considering, he declined to say, but added: 'I'm amazed by the conversations we're having already.' He said: 'Some of them are very well-known people. 'This country is in economic, social and cultural decline, we are in big trouble, and a lot of people recognise that if this is not turned around within the next decade, the place will, frankly, not be worth living in.' In the wide-ranging phone-in, he also said he wanted to be prime minister because he did not 'see anybody else with the guts to take on the really tough issues this country faces and turn it round'. Asked whether he supported same-sex marriage, which he previously opposed, he would only say it was a 'settled issue', and he described a recent Commons vote to decriminalise women who have abortions after the 24-week limit as 'disturbing'. Mr Farage also ruled out banning non-stunned meat, such as kosher and halal products, saying he did not 'like it' but there were 'more important, more urgent priorities'. He also called for US President Donald Trump to be allowed to address Parliament when he comes to the UK later this year, after he was barred from doing so on his previous state visit.
