Real places, real stories: The truth behind Bollywood's most iconic shooting locations

Have you ever watched a Bollywood movie and wondered, 'Where was this breathtaking scene filmed?' Chances are, you've seen more of India (and the world) through cinema than you realize. From dreamy valleys to haunted forts, Bollywood has used the magic of real locations to heighten its storytelling. But here's the twist: not everything you see on screen is what it seems. Some filmmakers cheat the locations using smart set design or CGI. Others insist on shooting at actual spots—some beautiful, some terrifying, and some outright legendary. Let's take you behind the scenes of some of Bollywood's most iconic filming locations—complete with stories from the stars and directors who brought them to life. The Icelandic Wreck That Became Bollywood's Star Remember the Gerua song from Dilwale where Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol dance amidst waterfalls and a broken plane? That half-wrecked aircraft wasn't a prop. SRK revealed in a Times of India interview that the plane 'was already there' on a real Icelandic crash site. 'Legend has it that the pilot crash-landed it there and saved everyone.'Yes, that surreal backdrop? 100% real. Shah Rukh Khan recalls filming Gerua in extreme cold: 'Our clothes were flying away, and I was slipping on the ice.' Kajol admitted they had no idea they'd find a wrecked plane in the middle of nowhere—it just became part of the story! Real locations aren't just for the audience—they deeply impact actors' performances. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo A chilling fort, a snowy cliff, or even a bustling Indian market can bring out raw emotion. Goa: More Than Just Beaches & Booze Bollywood has an enduring love affair with Goa. Whether it's friendship, crime, or heartbreak—this coastal haven plays every role with flair. Dum Maaro Dum didn't fake the chaos of Arpora's Saturday Night Market—they shot scenes live, amidst real tourists and vendors! Rohit Shetty's Dilwale used actual Goan workshops and cafes, giving scenes an authentic desi vibe. Dear Zindagi? Alia Bhatt cycled through real alleys in South Goa. Drishyam was shot at some scenic locations in Goa Ajay Devgn saw a different side of Goa during 'Drishyam' Shooting at Heritage Sites = Instant Grandeur Bollywood's obsession with heritage locations is no secret. Think forts, palaces, ghats—they don't just look majestic, they add authenticity. Filmmakers told Times of India that 'shooting at heritage sites adds a certain richness' and visual poetry to the frame. From Jodhaa Akbar's regal sets in Rajasthan to Ram-Leela's palace sequences, grandeur comes alive when it's real. Haunted & Spooky: Films That Got Too Real Yes, even horror films crave real fear. Enter: Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan—officially deemed 'haunted' and off-limits after sunset. According to Times of India, Bhangarh has hosted several Bollywood horror shoots. And trust us—no need for sound effects here. The silence and shadows are chilling enough. Films like Karan Arjun, Kapat, Trip To Bhangarh, etc were shot at the location and had their eerie experiences to share. Other popular haunted spots used in horror films include the deserted Kuldhara village and the eerie alleys of Shimla. Global Glamour: From Prague to Portugal Bollywood's camera also loves Europe. As per a blog on Hayot Films, here are some mind-blowing international shoots: Ae Dil Hai Mushkil – Vienna's museums and old-world charm Raabta – Budapest's Liberty Bridge Rockstar – Prague's romantic streets War – A car chase in Arctic Finland! These weren't recreated in studios. They were the real deal, with local crews and freezing temperatures to match. Closer Home: India's Scenic Stunners Kashmir: The valley has returned to Bollywood, with movies like Haider, Raazi, and Fitoor shot against its majestic backdrop. Gujarat: From Lagaan to Ram-Leela, its arid terrain and vibrant culture are cinematic gold. Kerala: Those lush backwaters and houseboats aren't CGI—films like Guru and Life of Pi used real locations in Alleppey and Munnar. Next time, if you're swept away by a romantic Bollywood song, or feel chills down your spine in a haunted scene—remember, you might just be watching a real place with a real story.

DTC revises rates to hire its electric buses

Schools, private agencies, the Delhi Police, Tourism Department, and others looking to hire buses for film-shooting purposes will have to pay the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) a higher fee to hire its buses, according to a proposal passed by the DTC Board. The DTC will now have to submit the proposal to the Transport Department to seek approval from the Delhi government. The new hire rates for DTC's electric buses have been proposed at Rs 110 per km, with a minimum daily charge of Rs 7,700 per bus for up to 70 km. A cost analysis for 2024–25 revealed that the per-kilometre cost of e-buses stands at Rs 90.38. The new rates would ensure cost efficiency and alignment with operational expenses, according to a statement from the Transport Minister's Office. The existing hire rates for CNG buses are Rs 60 per km (non-AC) and Rs 75 per km (AC), with minimum daily charges of Rs 3,000 and Rs 4,500, respectively. The existing hire rates for Delhi Police, Tourism Department, and private agencies were fixed in 2009 and for film shooting purposes in 2011. The majority of DTC's CNG fleet is going to be scrapped by the end of 2025, and 'therefore it is essential to fix hire charges for e-buses,' according to the resolution approved by the DTC Board. 'This decision marks a strategic step toward making DTC financially self-sustaining. Our goal is clear — to transform DTC into a revenue-surplus and profitable entity within a year,' said Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh at the DTC Board meeting. 'With these revised rates, we not only ensure fair recovery for electric buses but also open avenues for DTC's participation in creative sectors like film shooting, contributing to both revenue and public engagement,' Singh added. At present, there are 3,266 buses under the DTC. Of these, 1,895 are electric buses and 1,371 are CNG buses. With the addition of 200 buses, which were flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week, the electric fleet increased to 2,095 buses. 2,080 more electric buses are set to be added to the fleet by the end of the year.

Croatia visa delays wreck IIM-Calcutta batchmates' trip planned since 1979; each loses Rs 4 lakh

A long-awaited reunion of ten IIM Calcutta alumni from the 1979 batch was disrupted after visa delays from the Croatian embassy prevented half the group from travelling. Of the 18 members, including spouses, only nine could fly to Croatia as planned. The rest were forced to cancel or reroute their trips at significant personal cost, as per a report by the Times of India. The group had applied for Croatian Schengen visas well in advance, between February 14 and March 12; expecting the stated processing time of around two months. Their itinerary included a birthday celebration on Croatia's scenic Adriatic coast on May 20. However, visa delays meant that only the seven foreign nationals-four from the US, two from France, and one from Australia, received clearance. The remaining 11 Indian citizens did not get their visas in time. Ramkrishnan Rajaram, 75, a retired president of a textile company, said he had to abandon the Croatia leg entirely. 'My wife and I finally got our passports back from the Croatian embassy in Delhi and are now leaving for the UK and US. Rescheduling our tickets has cost me Rs 4 lakh,' he told TOI. 'We kept writing to the embassy, but there was no response.' Rajaram said the group had successfully held reunions across the world before, but never faced such an issue. 'Two of our friends stayed a day longer in Switzerland and got their Schengen visa from the Swiss embassy in just 3-4 days. The rest of us had applied through the Croatian embassy, but never received any visa or update.' (Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates) Pune-based Nandu Kulkarni, another member of the group, and his wife also failed to secure visas. They submitted their passports on March 6, but got no communication from the embassy even after the 60-day window. 'We even reached Mumbai airport hoping the passports would arrive, but had to return home,' he said to TOI. 'We have travelled extensively but have never had such an experience with any country.' This is how long you have to wait for your Schengen visa appointment Travel agents say delays and appointment shortages at the Croatian embassy are common. One agent, speaking anonymously, said, 'We often advise clients to get a Schengen visa from another country if they are visiting Croatia. This group should have been guided similarly.' Croatia's popularity as a destination has surged in recent years, particularly after the HBO series Game of Thrones was filmed in Dubrovnik. Bollywood productions have also recently turned to the country for filming. Despite repeated follow-ups, the Croatian embassy did not respond to the travellers or to media queries about the visa delays. A senior executive from a foreign airline called the situation surprising. 'Post-COVID, most countries are welcoming Indian travellers. Croatia is beautiful and Indians want to visit, but they've made it hard to enter,' the CEO said to TOI. The missed reunion has left many in the group disappointed, especially as they acknowledge the uncertainty of organizing another such gathering at their age.
