Where is Karen Pirie series 2 filmed? ITV crime drama locations revealed
The new season finds Lauren Lyle's titular detective investigating the kidnapping of a billionaire heiress and her infant son four decades earlier, with Karen searching for answers across Scotland and beyond. This means that there are a number of locations that were used for filming in series 2.
For those who are curious to know where the ITV drama was filmed, here is everything you need to know.
Where is Karen Pirie series 2 filmed?
As is expected, much of Karen Pirie series 2 is filmed in Scotland though locations in Malta were also used for scenes in later episodes.
The narrative jumps between the 1980s and present day, and in the former we see oil tycoon heiress Catriona (Julia Brown) and her child meet with family friend Bonnie (Kat Ronney) for fish and chips. Catriona and her son are kidnapped after parting ways with Bonnie, never to be seen again.
Maintaining the location of Val McDermid's original novel, A Darker Domain, the series filmed the kidnapping scene in the coastal town of Kinghorn, Fife. Locations such as the train station and coastal viewers are seen during the scenes.
Luss Estate in Loch Lochmond is another location used for the series, it is where Catriona is kept after being kidnapped and is featured in both the 1980s and present day timeline in the show. The location has been used for filming before, and has featured in shows like Black Mirror.
Glasgow also features predominantly in the series, with music venue Barrowland Ballroom used as a location for a night out that Catriona and Bonnie enjoy before she is kidnapped. It is a historic venue in the city, and cemented its place in music history when it was used for the music video of Simple Minds' single Waterfront.
Another filming location in Glasgow is The Citizen bar and restaurant, which is depicted during a date night between Karen and boyfriend Phil (Zach Wyatt) when they need to blow off some steam from their arduous case.
Outside of Scotland, the series also films in Malta's capital, Valletta, where Karen goes in order to investigate a new suspect in the case. The location does not match McDermid's original novel, which sees Karen travel to Tuscany, Italy, for the final piece of the puzzle — but it is still a magnificent location.
Lyle and Karen Pirie creator Emer Kenny spoke to Yahoo UK about the beauty of Scotland and why it made it the perfect location for a series like the ITV crime drama.
"I find that Scotland, I really believe, being from there, that it just can't be replicated anywhere else," Lyle shared. "I've shot in New Zealand, various places that could be similar.
"There's something quite profound about being from a place that has such a dark, mad history — witches and wars and all these amazing things that have been around for thousands of years — and to shoot something in places that harbour all of that can be quite dark and spooky and exciting. And I think you sort of effortlessly receive it from the place without trying too hard."
Kenny added: "I'm not Scottish, but my family are Welsh and Irish and I think there's a similar sense of humour that I think is really special and I try and give it to the show as much as possible, but there's a kind of darkness to the humour and a wise-cracking, deadpan tone that I think we try and get into Karen and I think it adds something that's quite unique to those kinds of places."
Karen Pirie continues Sundays at 9pm on ITV1.

BBC's new show Destination X rips off The Traitors with brutal twist
Destination X borrowed one of the twists in The Traitors series three for its first episode What did you miss? BBC travel show Destination X has copied a big twist from the latest series of The Traitors. Three contestants were brutally sent home before they had the chance to play the game, just like in The Traitors where participants had to get off the train before it had even left for the Scottish castle. Interestingly in The Traitors, the three contestants were brought back in the game to stir up trouble. One of them, Alexander Dragonetti, ended up making the final. It's not known whether Destination X will repeat this part of the format that proved popular in The Traitors earlier this year. But for now, episode one has revealed the first twist of the game. What, how and why? Gamemaster Rob Brydon delivered the news to the contestants that not all of them would be boarding the Destination X coach. He told them: "There are 13 in front of me, but only 10 of you will be progressing beyond the doors." The contestants raced around the airport to find a suitcase that weighed 10kg to secure their place on the coach. Immediately, the six quickest participants who completed the challenge were safe. The remaining then had to find something with one of the four passenger names that were called out in the airport earlier on. Once complete, Brydon announced the three people going home were retired detective Claire, Ashvin and Chloe-Ann. He said: "We have our final 10. Claire, Ashvin, Chloe-Ann, I'm afraid it's goodbye. Please leave the airport." Away from the group, Brydon admitted it wasn't easy sending people packing. He said, "Oh, that doesn't feel nice." In the voiceover, the host teased that more twists and turns would be on the horizon for those playing the Destination X board game across Europe. He said: "Well, that should show my remaining players who pulls the strings around here as the magical mystery tour I'm sending them will have plenty of twists." Meanwhile, he told the group: "Congratulations guys, you are one step closer to £100,000... let's get you on your way to the first Destination X." There is £100,000 prize money at stake and there can only be one winner. Destination X contestant quits after 24 hours While some players were left with no choice but to leave Destination X, one contestant Madhi who had boarded the coach decided to quit after 24 hours. After just one night on the coach, contestant Mahdi decided to quit the reality series. "One player has come to a difficult decision," host Brydon told the viewers. Content creator Mahdi, 22, come to the end of the road on his Destination X journey. He explained why he had decided to quit saying: "This game is getting too much for me. As much as I've enjoyed it so far. I genuinely feel like it's time to go home." The content creator struggled with being cut off from his social network. He planned to: "Go see my mum, go see my family, go see family. And especially have a home cooked meal." Destination X is airing on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 9pm on Wednesday.

The president snapped at CNN's Kaitlan Collins at the White House twice.
President Donald Trump snapped at CNN senior White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins on Tuesday after she pressed him about a new claim he made on Air Force One. On the flight back from his Scotland sojourn, Trump claimed that Virginia Giuffre—one of Jeffrey Epstein's victims—was among the women the disgraced financier had 'stolen' from the spa at Mar‑a‑Lago. After landing in Washington, Collins asked the president whether the alleged theft 'raised alarm bells' for him at the time.
