The Sun02-05-2025

LIDL shoppers can snap up a tech-savvy lawn upgrade this week – as the Middle of Lidl is packed with garden bargains, including a robot lawn mower.
The Parkside 20V Robot Lawnmower is the standout deal, normally £249 but down to just £199 with the Lidl Plus app from now until May 7.
It's fully automatic, comes with a charging station and can handle up to 500m² of lawn – perfect if you're fed up with dragging the mower around every weekend.
The 20V battery gives you 45 minutes of mowing time, there's a big stop button for safety shut-off.
The bargain retailer will also be flogging the Livarno Home Hanging Garden Chair for £129.99 with the Lidl Plus app from Saturday, May 4.
This is a reduction from its regular £149.99 price.
The Livarno Home chair features a comfy padded cushion and a stable, wide-set frame made with powder-coated steel.
But not everything will cost you hundreds of pounds – Lidl's got budget-friendly buys from as little as £2.
Top of the low-cost list is the Standing Geranium, just £1.99.
These bright summer favourites are ideal for patios, balconies, or flower beds and can even be grown indoors.

The stainless steel lights switch on automatically at dusk and shine with a warm white glow for up to eight hours when fully charged.
All these items are in stores now as part of the Middle of Lidl range – but they won't hang about for long. As always with Lidl's special buys, once they're gone, they're gone.
Remember to compare prices
It is important to remember to always shop around when buying something like this as you might find a cheaper alternative.
Websites like Trolley and Price Spy let you compare thousands of products across different retailers to find the best price.
Price Spy even lets you see how much an item has cost over time, so you can see if the current price is a good deal.
A quick scan on the Google Shopping/Product tab will also bring up how much retailers are selling a certain item for.

Landing the Lidl deal showed our fish firm wasn't small fry

Things are going swimmingly for Colman Keohane, managing director of Keohane Seafoods. The family fish business, run by Keohane and his brother Brian, recently signed a €30 million deal with the retailer Lidl. The company was set up in 2010 by the brothers' father, Michael, who had previously run an aquaculture venture, specialising in mussels, that he subsequently sold. Keohane, the eldest of five, grew up helping his father out, 'roped in from the age of 12', he says. 'Before that I'd have been sent to my mother's family, who were farmers in Blarney, to pick stones.' It developed a work ethic that has stood him in good stead. After studying accountancy in college — light relief by comparison — he returned to Blarney in the early Noughties to open a fish shop. Pretty soon he had a thriving wholesale business, supplying hotels and restaurants too. 'We were one of the first swanky fish shops, with wines and artisanal products,' he says. Things got boomier through the Celtic tiger, but in the crash that followed he entered choppy waters as restaurants struggled. 'There was a lot of bad debt,' Keohane recalls. • Ireland's 100 best restaurants for 2025 His father's idea to set up a new family business in the depths of a recession was only the latest in a list of entrepreneurial activities. 'Dad had done every species of fish in his time, from prawns to white fish, to crab and mussels, always buying, processing and selling it on. That was his strength — finding opportunities, spotting the trend and producing the quality. At the time, quality pre-packed products were only coming into the market here and have since grown and grown.' His father has a number of patents under his belt, including one for vacuum-packed mussels. He was innovative in other ways too; for example, he was the first processor to market here with 'skin film' packaging. 'It's where the film drapes over, say, your salmon darne. It was a trend that was happening at the time in Europe and presents the products really well,' he says. When they set up Keohane Seafood in 2010, with a view to selling pre-packed fish for the retail market, the family already had strong connections with the fishermen at Union Hall and Castletownbere in west Cork. 'We were in a location where all the fresh fish was being landed and we already had good relationships. But the idea for the business was to go where there was more population, so we started out in a 3,000 sq ft unit in Cork city,' he says. They landed SuperValu as their first customer, quickly followed by Dunnes and Lidl. In 2015 they opened a second factory in Bantry. Pretty soon the bulk of the company's revenues came from providing white-label solutions to retailers, with added-value inputs such as marinades and seasonings. 'At the time retailers were shifting away from loose fish counters and we were offering a microwavable product that was completely new,' he says. 'Right now it's all about meal solutions, with ready-to-cook being the big trend,' Keohane adds. To sate demand the company has just invested in a third factory, also in Bantry, specially kitted out to produce ready-to-eat meals. In total the business employs 285 people and is growing. The key to its success is simple, he reckons. 'We produce to a very high quality, all the time, and we have a strong innovation culture. Last year alone we delivered 70 new products to market.' Thanks to customers such as Lidl, it has also been able to grow exports too. It sells into the UK, Germany, France and Italy. Determined to develop the food service offering once more, it's all hands on deck for the family and their growing team, Keohane says. 'People are excited by the growth.'

Iceland confirms exact date another supermarket store will shut for good

The Shotton Iceland branch - which is located on Chester Road - is pulling down the shutters for good when the store closes at 4pm on Monday, June 23 Iceland has confirmed the closure of another one of its supermarket stores this month. The frozen food chain confirmed on social media last month that its branch in Shotton would be closing in June. The Shotton Iceland branch - which is located on Chester Road - is pulling down the shutters for good when the store closes at 4pm on Monday, June 23. ‌ However, shoppers shouldn't be too worried, as the retailer is opening up a brand new site the very next day. The chain will be opening a new Food Warehouse store in Connah's Quay at 8am the morning after on Tuesday, June 24. ‌ The new site is based at Deeside Retail Park, the former Queensferry Lidl site. Lidl recently relocated to a new purpose-built store in the area. Before the move, Lidl had served the area for nearly 30 years. The Food Warehouse - launched by the frozen food retailer back in 2014 - is a larger store format compared to Iceland and offers shoppers an extended range of frozen, chilled and grocery products. Alongside this, it offers larger bulk buy options. Food Warehouse stores typically span 10,000 to 15,000 square feet and are commonly located in retail parks. In its social media post, Iceland said: 'A brand new The Food Warehouse store will open at Deeside Retail Parc at 8am on Tuesday 24th June! Don't worry you can still shop with us at any of our neighbouring Iceland or The Food Warehouse stores. This is not goodbye, but see you again soon!' Iceland already has a presence at Deeside Retail Park through a concession inside The Range store, located next to the soon-to-open Food Warehouse. Iceland has closed a handful of stores over the last few months, which included its Welling branch in London., as well as its stores on Shenley Road, Borehamwood and Alphington Road Retail Park in Exeter. ‌ However, this comes alongside a few new openings too with a new store in Derby and at Victoria Chambers on London Road. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to open 20 Iceland and Food Warehouse stores by the end of April. At the time, the group's bosses claimed that its new 500,000 square foot £100million distribution centre in Warrington would be "game-changing" for the business. The Omega Park Site in Warrington - which opened in partnership with GXO in February - supplies around 350 Iceland stores across the north west of England, the Scottish borders and Wales.
