From Textbooks To Banknotes, How Mujibur Rahman's Legacy Has Been Targeted Under Yunus Admin
Last Updated:
On Sunday, Bangladesh issued new banknotes that no longer feature the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Bangladesh has recently issued new banknotes that no longer feature the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the nation's founding president and father of the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had led Bangladesh to independence from Pakistan in 1971 and was assassinated along with most of his family in a 1975 coup. The new banknotes will now feature traditional landmarks of the country, marking a significant departure from the past designs.
This move is seen as another attempt to diminish Mujib's legacy under the regime of Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a pivotal figure in Bangladesh's independence movement, has faced both symbolic and institutional challenges, especially during periods of intense political tension involving Muhammad Yunus, the country's chief adviser.
Mujib's symbolic significance has faced several direct attacks. One of the most notable incidents occurred in December 2020 when a sculpture of Mujibur Rahman was vandalised in Kushtia. This act was widely condemned across the political spectrum and perceived as an insult to the nation's founding values.
Joy Bangla
The use of the 'Joy Bangla" slogan has also been a contentious issue. In March 2020, the High Court declared 'Joy Bangla" as the official national slogan, underscoring its deep connection to the Liberation War. However, some political and civil society figures, often linked to non-partisan or oppositional circles, have refrained from using it in official forums and public speeches. The government criticized this reluctance as an intentional effort to erase Mujib's legacy. Although Yunus did not speak against the slogan, his broader circle—often depicted as 'elitist" or 'detached from 1971 values"—was accused of enabling this cultural disengagement from the Liberation War's ideological core.
Legacy Wiped Off From Textbooks
Controversy has also surrounded textbook revisions, with critics alleging efforts to minimize or omit references to Mujib's role in Bangladesh's history. The interim government has revised textbooks on the 1971 Liberation War to state that Ziaur Rahman declared the country's independence, replacing the previous text that credited Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) of Bangladesh has made revisions to 441 textbooks used by primary, secondary, and higher secondary students. Over 40 crore textbooks are being produced for the 2025 academic year, as reported by The Daily Star. The new textbooks, with several changes, have been distributed among primary and secondary students since January 1.
Mujibur's House Vandalised
In early February 2025, Bangladesh witnessed a significant act of political unrest when protesters vandalized and set fire to the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This residence at 32 Dhanmondi in Dhaka is where Mujibur Rahman declared Bangladesh's independence in 1971 and where he was assassinated in
The house had been converted into a museum by his daughter, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. On February 5, 2025, thousands of protesters gathered outside the Dhanmondi residence in response to a social media campaign called the 'Bulldozer Procession." The protest coincided with a virtual address by Sheikh Hasina, who is in exile in India following her ousting in August 2024. As Hasina began her speech, demonstrators stormed the property, dismantled parts of the building, and set it ablaze. Heavy machinery, including cranes and excavators, was brought in to aid in the demolition.
Currency Revamped
On Sunday, Bangladesh issued new banknotes that no longer feature the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Instead, the new notes will showcase natural landscapes and traditional landmarks of the country. 'Under the new series and design, the notes will not feature any human portraits but will instead showcase natural landscapes and traditional landmarks," said Arif Hossain Khan, a spokesman for Bangladesh Bank, to AFP. The notes for three of the nine different denominations were released on Sunday. 'The new notes will be issued from the central bank's headquarters and later from its other offices across the country," Khan stated. Among the designs set to feature in Bangladesh's new banknotes are images of Hindu and Buddhist temples and historical palaces. They will also include artwork by the late painter Zainul Abedin, depicting the Bengal famine during British colonial rule. Another note will show the national martyrs' memorial to honor those who died in the independence war against Pakistan. The other denominations of the notes will be released in phases.
What Next
The conflict is likely to intensify as multiple legal cases against Yunus progress through the courts. Allegations include violations of labor laws, improper handling of employee benefits at Grameen Telecom, and ongoing investigations by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) into alleged financial misconduct. In 2023, a group of employees filed formal complaints against Yunus and his associates, accusing them of withholding mandatory worker benefits. The Labor Court took cognizance of the charges, and the case is moving forward. Separately, the ACC has launched inquiries into potential misuse of donor funds, increasing legal pressure on the Nobel Laureate. If the courts rule against Yunus, it may not only affect his personal reputation but also reinforce the government's narrative about protecting national ideology.
Meanwhile, with elections overdue, Bangladesh is facing political uncertainty. Sources have told CNN-News18 that Bangladesh Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman is determined to explore all options to remove Yunus from power. Sources say Zaman is considering various avenues, including exploiting constitutional ambiguities, to challenge Yunus's interim government. Intelligence sources highlight that the interim government's legal basis is fragile, as Bangladesh's constitution mandates elections within 90 days of a government's dissolution. Zaman plans to unite the parties of Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia to contest elections for the country, according to sources.

Vidyadas Baba takes charge as Anjanadri temple's chief priest
Gangavathi (Koppal): Vidyadas Baba has taken charge as the chief priest of the Sri Anjaneya Swamy Temple at Anjanadri Hill in Chikka Rampur village, a location considered sacred as Lord Hanuman's birthplace. Following his petition to the Supreme Court challenging his dismissal and the temple's acquisition, the court issued a notice to the state govt on May 27, instructing him to continue conducting the temple's puja and karmic activities. Upon his arrival at Anjanadri, Vidyadas addressed the gathered devotees, proclaiming that the truth was victorious. He said the temple premises will be kept clean, and religious activities, including Sanskrit Pathshala, Homa Havan and Hanuman Chalisa chanting, will be organised regularly. Additionally, a special puja for Anjaneya will occur every Saturday, with free food provided to the devotees. The dispute began in 2018 when the state govt attempted to place the Anjanadri Temple under the Muzrai department's control using the Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions and Endowments Act, 1997. This action faced strong opposition from Vidyadas, whose family maintained the temple's religious practices for over 120 years following the Ramanandi tradition. On May 27, the Supreme Court instructed the state govt to retain Vidyadas as chief priest, allowing him to continue his religious duties and reside in the Mandir room. This decision temporarily halted the govt's takeover plans and reinforced the High Court's 2023 interim order permitting his continued service. The Supreme Court stated that interference with the Pandit's removal or religious practices would face serious consequences. While acknowledging the Muzrai department's administrative role, it upheld Vidyadas and his family's right to conduct worship undisturbed, ensuring their accommodation and basic needs at the premises. Before 2018, the Kishkinda Trust and Pandit family managed the mandir independently without govt involvement. The Koppal deputy commissioner's 2018 order transferred administrative control to the govt under the Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions and Endowments Act, 1997. The writ petition lodged by Vidyadas is awaiting resolution in the Karnataka high court. The order from the Supreme Court functions as a provisional directive, compelling compliance with the earlier orders of the high court and advising the state govt against any breaches.

Kiren Rijiju starts speaking with political parties for impeachment motion against HC Judge Yashwant Varma
New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has started speaking with various political parties for an impeachment motion against High Court judge Yashwant Varma in the next Parliament Session, government sources said on Tuesday. The Supreme Court had constituted an inquiry committee following allegations of 'burnt cash' found at a storeroom of Justice Varma's residence when he was a Judge of the Delhi High Court. The in-house inquiry committee submitted its report on the issue last month, which has since been forwarded to the Prime Minister and the President of India. 'The Parliamentary Affairs Minister has started speaking to all parties for impeachment motion against HC judge Yashwant Varma,' a source said. On May 4, a panel of judges tasked with conducting an internal inquiry into allegations of cash being discovered at Justice Yashwant Varma's official residence submitted its report to the then Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna. According to an official communication from the Supreme Court, the three-member committee, comprising Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana, Justice GS Sandhawalia, Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh and Justice Anu Sivaraman, Judge of the High Court of Karnataka concluded its investigation and presented its findings in a report dated May 3. The Chief Justice of India constituted this committee on March 22 to examine the allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma, a sitting judge of the High Court of Delhi. On April 5, Justice Yashwant Varma was sworn in as a judge of the Allahabad High Court under unusual and contentious circumstances. CPI general secretary D Raja had said on Wednesday that credibility of judiciary needs to be restored and his party will support the action against Justice Varma. 'Let them bring the impeachment motion. The Judiciary should understand that it has to work within the framework of the Constitution... To restore the credibility of our judiciary, there must be some strong action. We will support the impeachment motion. But the point is, when will it be brought? We raised several critical questions about the money found in the judge's residence, but concrete action has been delayed... Our party will participate in the debate before the Parliament when this issue is discussed,' Raja told ANI. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar had last month referred to the cash-discovery row, saying there is no FIR to date. 'We're confronted with the jarring reality. A judge's residence in Lutyens Delhi had burnt notes. There is no FIR to in the country is now thinking whether this will be washed off or fade with time, and they are really concerned. How come the criminal justice system was not operationalised as it would have been done for every other individual?... This issue for which people are waiting with bated breath, the money trail, its source, its purpose,' Dhankhar said at an event in the national capital. 'Did it pollute the judicial system? Who are the bigger sharks? We need to find out. Already two months have gone by. An investigation is required to be conducted with expedition. So is the case with the registration of an FIR. I do hope and believe that the Supreme Court acted the very best so far because it had a legacy issue of judgments imparted in the nineties,' he added. He lauded some of the steps taken by the Supreme Court. 'But now is the time to take a call. Partly the confidence has been restored by Justice Khanna. When you put in public domain documentation which people thought will never be shown to them. That was a big step by him to project accountability and transparency. If democratic values have to prosper, I am sure this is a test case. There must be a swift investigation by those concerned with the investigation,' the Vice President said. (ANI)

Tamil Nadu govt files petition in SC against Madras High Court order on Vice Chancellor appointments
NEW DELHI: The Tamil Nadu government has filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court's vacation bench challenging the Madras High Court's May 21, 2025 order that stayed the operation of nine laws passed in 2020 related to the appointment of Vice Chancellors in state universities. The case has gained importance as the parties involved in the disputes did not approach the vacation bench for relief, but after the Tamil Nadu government moved the Supreme Court, there are chances the matter will be heard in a day or two. The Supreme Court is currently on summer vacation until July 13, with only limited hearings taking place, and the regular court will reopen on July 14. According to Supreme Court registry sources, the case will be heard soon. 'The matter is very sensitive in nature. So it will come up for hearing in a day or two,' a registry official told TNIE. The petition before the High Court challenged the state laws on how Vice Chancellors of state universities are appointed, saying they violate the University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations of 2018. In the SLP, prepared by senior advocate P Wilson, the Tamil Nadu government referred to a 2014 judgment, saying courts should be cautious in passing interim orders in constitutional matters and must respect the strong presumption of constitutionality. It is important to note that these laws were earlier declared valid by the Supreme Court using its special powers under Article 142 of the Constitution after it ruled that the Governor's decision to send the bills for the President's approval was illegal. The Tamil Nadu government said the High Court's interim order stayed the provisions that shift the power to appoint Vice Chancellors from the Chancellor (the Governor) to the state government. The government added that the order effectively gave final relief at the interim stage. The state government also pointed out that the petition was filed during court vacations without showing any urgency. The High Court's vacation bench heard the petition from a lawyer linked to a political party, which the Tamil Nadu government said went against the High Court's April 29, 2025, notification that only 'very urgent matters' should be listed during vacations. 'The division bench of the High Court did not give sufficient opportunity to the petitioner—State to file a counter affidavit or respond to the writ petition or even argue before staying nine statutes enacted by the State Legislature which received deemed assent from this court in a landmark judgement titled State of Tamil Nadu Vs Governor of Tamil Nadu,' the government said. The state also accused the High Court of showing 'undue haste' in hearing the interim applications and said the court gave 'extraneous reasons for its findings.' While it is not unusual for vacation courts to sit beyond normal hours for urgent cases, the Tamil Nadu government said there was no reason for the High Court bench to rush the hearing on May 21 without giving the state a proper chance to respond, especially when no action under the laws was expected before June. It also noted a strange incident during the May 21 hearing, when the court's microphone was muted and neither those inside the courtroom nor those attending virtually could hear the order being passed. 'The High Court has given extraneous reasons for its findings such that the Senior Counsel representing the Petitioner was part of the counsel who argued the batch of writ petitions challenging the farm laws,' the Tamil Nadu government said.
