California official's insane spending spree with insurance execs at the state's fanciest restaurants while LA burned

Daily Mail02-05-2025

California 's insurance commissioner was wined and dined by an insurance boss at one of Los Angeles ' fanciest restaurants as the city burned beneath them.
Entire communities spent weeks on edge in January, evacuated from their homes and hunkering down in shelters or with loved ones, unsure if their homes had been razed during unrelenting wildfires which killed 30 and destroyed unimaginable swathes of land.
The perverse reality was that the 'lucky ones' were those wracked with fear about whether their insurers would ever pay out for any damage they faced.
Others were part of the unfortunate cluster whose insurance premiums had spiked to such extortionate levels that they'd had to cancel their policies, or had simply been told one day by their provider that they were no longer covered.
Meanwhile the man tasked with holding insurance firms to account, Ricardo Lara, was feasting on sea urchin, lobster salpicón, a rack of lamb and two bottles of Leirana Albariño with Raul Vargas, CEO of the Farmers Insurance Group.
On January 15, the pair had a table at San Laurel, the brainchild of famed chef José Andrés which boasts glittering and sprawling views of Los Angeles.
That same day, first responders were combing through the devastation of the Palisades fire searching for the charred remains of residents in the wreckage, while firefighters were still battling to get the Eaton fire under control.
An investigation by the San Francisco Standard accuses Lara of blowing $30,000 of money allocated to his campaign on fancy restaurants and wining and dining.
During the January 15 dinner, the total bill came to $697, including tip.
On that occasion, Lara paid $234 of the bill, charging it to a campaign committee balance created two years prior to fund a run for lieutenant governor which never materialized.
The rest of the tab was picked up by Vargas, whose company is California's second largest home insurer.
Throughout his term, Lara has been repeatedly accused of cozying up to the insurance industry which he is mandated to police.
As part of his elected role, Lara sets rates in California and is responsible for ensuring a healthy and competitive insurance market.
California is gripped by an insurance crisis as insurers increasingly turn their backs on areas they now deem high risk for wildfires and natural disasters.
From 2020 to 2022, insurance companies chose not to renew 2.8million policies f or homeowners across the state. This included 531,000 in Los Angeles County, which was decimated by the wildfires.
Just months after he took office in 2019, he was forced to issue an apology after it emerged he had taken tens of thousands of dollars in campaign donations from parties with interests in the insurance sphere.
He said he was 'deeply sorry' for his actions and vowed to no longer engage with the industry for support.
In addition to his latest dinner, last year Lara charged two meal bills at swanky Italian restaurant Piatti to his campaign fund.
One of the checks, from April 17 2024, was for more than $1,000. He described the dinner as a 'campaign strategy meeting' with eight diners.
Between them, they ordered seven cocktails, eight glasses of wine, a bottle of Honis sauvignon blanc and almost half the food items on the dinner menu, including steaks, meatballs, olives and various desserts.
And in 2023, he held four separate meetings at Baar Baar, a ritzy Indian restaurant in Los Angeles.
On one of these visits, he and unnamed guests dined over a bottle of Cobb riesling, two more glasses of wine, lamb keema hyderabadi, shrimp ghee roast, and beef short ribs.
Meanwhile on another, he and a guest ordered three Slumdog Millionaire cocktails, along with other drinks.
Consumer Watchdog advocacy group executive director Carmen Balber told the publication Lara's dinner with Vargas was 'disappointing' given his earlier apology.
'It sounds like he's mixing regulation and politics once more. Maybe ''shocker'' is the wrong word, but it's disappointing. And if this wasn't a campaign meeting, then what is this campaign committee? Nothing more than a slush fund.'
Beyond the fancy restaurants, Lara is also facing intense criticism for his travel schedule and for policies which are set to benefit insurers and drive up premiums by up to 50 percent.
The first Senate committee hearing on insurance in the wake of the fires was held on March 12, 2025. Lara did not attend, according to an investigation conducted by ABC.
Instead, he traveled to Bermuda to attend a conference where he delivered a 15-minute speech.
The Senate Insurance Committee holds between two and three crucial hearings a year, and the report determined that in his six year term so far, Lara has missed several to travel interstate or internationally.
A spokesperson for his office countered the criticism, insisting: 'Commissioner Lara's job is to ensure that California consumers have real choices - not just last resorts.
'This involves going over the heads of insurance companies and engaging directly with the global reinsurance groups that support them. Nearly 40% of the world's reinsurance companies are based in Bermuda, paying out trillions of dollars in claims - including those for wildfires.'
'He is working to retain insurance companies in the market and attract those that have left.'

Arsenal working on 6 new contracts for first-team stars after Gabriel agreement

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes signed a new long-term contract earlier this week but Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta does not intend to stop there Andrea Berta will now seek to iron out new long-term contracts for four key Arsenal stars after defender Gabriel Magalhaes committed his future to the club until 2029. While the Gunners are yet to make any significant early moves in the transfer market besides pushing ahead with a £5million swoop for Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, Italian chief Berta has made notable progress on a number of key contract extensions behind the scenes. Sources have told Mirror Football that since arriving at the club in March, Berta has been working extremely hard on a number of key agreements as Arsenal want to keep their house in order and retain the services of their most-prized assets. ‌ Both Bukayo Saka and William Saliba, who have two years left to run on their current deals, have held positive dialogue with Arsenal over fresh terms and want to stay at the club. ‌ Saliba has been courted by Real Madrid but Mikel Arteta's indispensable duo have already spoken publicly about their desire to remain in north London in a major boost for the Spaniard. Arsenal are relaxed about the process and while there's an understanding that while negotiations can take time, they maintain confidence that agreements will be struck in due course. Academy graduates Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly are also in line for new deals which would also include lucrative pay-rises. Their current contracts are due to expire in the summer of 2026 but there is optimism agreements for both players are now in sight following two stellar breakthrough seasons at the Emirates. Conversations with Lewis-Skelly began prior to Berta's arrival while one of the Italian's first acts as Arsenal sporting director was to approach the representatives of Nwaneri to propose formal contract discussions, which are advancing. Negotiations also remain ongoing with both Thomas Partey, who is currently set to become a free agent at the end of the month, and winger Leandro Trossard. Arsenal made Partey what they considered to be a competitive offer around 10 days ago but at this moment in time, there is still no agreement between the parties and the situation remains open. The Ghanaian midfielder, who turns 32 next Friday and has also attracted interest from Barcelona, wants to stay with the Gunners and is understood to be settled in north London. ‌ However, Partey is said to be cautious that his next contract could potentially represent his last big deal and his agents want to see his importance to the team reflected within the terms proposed. All parties want to find a quick resolution as Partey and his agent Jose Daniel Jimenez Pozanco, who has been handling talks with Arsenal, are currently scheduled to be in Ghana from June 10 to June 13 for the second edition of the 'Thomas Partey tournament' where scouts from Europe will cast an eye over young local talent. Additionally, Partey is due to appear at the All Star Festival in Accra, Ghana on June 18. Meanwhile, Trossard remains in line to extend his stay with Arsenal having joined the club from Brighton in January 2023. He was the subject of a verbal offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad last September and sources close to Trossard have confirmed there is still interest from the Middle East but to date, there have been no concrete offers this summer and the 30-year-old Belgian's priority is to continue with the Gunners. 'Murderer' gives chilling reason for decapitating woman found dead in suitcase

Denisa Maria Paun's decapitated body was found shoved into a suitcase by an abandoned farmhouse in Italy - the man accused of murdering her reportedly shared a reason for the killing The man accused of murdering a woman whose body was found beheaded and stuffed in a suitcase in a popular tourist region reportedly shared a chilling reason for the killing. Romanian national Denisa Maria Paun, 30, vanished from a hotel in Prato in Tuscany on May 15. Her remains were tragically found around 11am on June 4. Denisa, who worked as an escort, went missing days after she told her friend she feared for her life. Her body was later found hidden among brambles near an abandoned farmhouse in Montecatini Terme, around 20 miles west of Florence. Local security guard Vasile Frumuzache, 32, also a Romanian national, has reportedly admitted to killing the 30-year-old and cutting off her head. ‌ ‌ The married dad-of-two, who lived and worked in Rome, is facing charges of murder and suppression of a corpse. He is said to have used a knife to behead Denisa and set fire to her body - after she allegedly threatened to tell his wife if he did not pay for her services. Frumuzache told police his chilling reason for allegedly killing Denisa, saying: "She was blackmailing me, that's why I killed her. When I told her that I was a security guard and that I was married, she told me that she was able to reach my wife." He told cops the pair connected on a dating app before they met and had sex at a hotel, the same night she was savagely killed. Denisa reportedly demanded he pay more than £8,000 or she would go to his wife and expose the cheating. Frumuzache is believed to have suffocated Denisa before cutting off her head, shoving her body into a big black bag and then into a suitcase. A post-mortem is expected to confirm the exact cause of death. CCTV footage from outside the hotel showed the 32-year-old man holding a black bag at around 10.50pm. ‌ Footage then caught Frumuzache walking out of the hotel holding a white suitcase, which belonged to Denisa, and put it into his car. Italian prosecutors say the woman's remains were in that suitcase. Using GPS data from a tracker fitted to his car for insurance purposes, detectives traced his journey to the spot where the body was found. This comes after reports the 30-year-old called her mum just hours before her harrowing death and "seemed calm". Denisa said: "Hi Mum, I'm fine, see you at home on Saturday." Shortly after this call however, Denisa's phone switched off. Her mum then went to police in Rome and reported her as missing. A few days before her death, Denis reportedly told a friend: "I'm afraid I'm going to be killed."
