
Workplace bullying hinders employees creative thinking, engagement in side projects: IIM study
In many organisations, employees work on secret, self-initiated ideas developed without management's knowledge and present them to the management once they are ready to deliver significant results leading to business success, it said.
According to officials, the researchers employed a mixed-method approach to gather the necessary data.
In the experimental scenario-based part of the research, the team gathered input from 112 participants. In the survey-based part of the research, input from 313 employees working in IT-enabled companies was gathered.
"Our study sheds light on how subtle forms of workplace mistreatment can silently erode employees' creative potential. Organisations must create an environment where support, respect, and open dialogue are the norm to unlock true innovation," Rishab Chauhan, PhD scholar, IIM Lucknow, told PTI.

Open communication between managers and employees can help preserve and revive creative thinking, it noted.
The study has bagged the "Best Paper in Proceedings Award" in the conflict management division at the prestigious 85th Academy of Management (AOM) Conference, held at Copenhagen, Denmark.
"It is an honour to have our work recognised at a global platform like AOM. We hope these findings encourage companies to not only curb workplace bullying but also actively nurture the creative spark in their employees," Payal Mehra, Professor, Communications, IIM Lucknow.
The study highlights the critical need for organisations to actively identify and address negative workplace behaviour. It also highlights the need for strong communication and anti- bullying policies to encourage employee-driven innovation.
"Organisations should establish a proper punitive system for detrimental workplace bullying at workplace. Firms can include employee behaviour as a significant metric for their performance assessment to mitigate workplace abuse. They should also offer secure avenues for employees to lodge appeals and enact proactive measures against workplace bullying," the study said.

There are concerns among experts that increased tariffs announced by President Donald Trump on Indian imports into the United States, will have a negative impact on jobs in the affected sectors, PTI reported. According RP Yadav, founder and CMD of workforce solutions and HR services provider Genius HRTech, the hiked US tariffs are expected to significantly impact India's employment landscape in industries heavily dependent on the US market for growth and continuity. Sectors such as agriculture, auto components, gems and jewellery, and textiles are likely to be among the worst impacted, as per Yadav. He added that even within these sectors, it is the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) who will bear the brunt. Yadav estimates that between 2,00,000 to 3,00,000 jobs are at immediate risk. Further, the labour-intensive textiles industry alone could potentially lose 1,00,000 jobs, if the tariff regime continues beyond the next six months, he added. He added that in the gem and jewellery sector, including units in Surat and SEEPZ in Mumbai, 'thousands of jobs are at risk due to reduced demand and cost escalation in the US market', he added. However, not all agree. Balasubramanian Anantha Narayanan, Senior VP at TeamLease Services, feels that unlike China, India is largely a domestic consumption driven economy. Thus, any impact from the US tariffs would not impact jobs. 'At this point in time, we aren't seeing any signs of a slowdown or loss of jobs. This also by extension means that our jobs are largely in service of domestic demand too, with the exception of some sectors like ITeS among others,' Narayanan said. He added, 'Our exports to the USA are $87 billion, which is roughly about 2.2 per cent of our overall GDP. Largely pharma, electronics etc. won't be affected for now, which will further limit the export exposure to industries such as textiles, gems and jewellery among others.' Further, Narayanan noted that the full 50 per cent tariff hike comes into effect later this month on August 27, and it is possible that some negotiations could happen before that. He added that positives from the recently announced free trade agreement (FTA) with the UK and other countries, could possibly make way for the redirection of Indian goods, rather than a complete shut down of the exports. 'Even if these US tariffs do come about, we'll definitely figure out a way of redirecting or diversifying our trade to other markets. Therefore, at this point in time, we aren't seeing any signs of a slowdown or loss of jobs. It's an evolving situation and we'll get to know more in due course of time,' he feels. Aditya Mishra, MD and CEO of CIEL HR also feels that while the US tariff scenario is unsettling for Indian exporters, especially those in the auto components, electronics, engineering goods, footwear, gems and jewellery, leather, shrimp, and textiles, widespread layoffs appear unlikely at this stage. 'Companies are already in cost-containment mode, reducing discretionary spending, streamlining production, and freezing hiring. The immediate pressure will be on temporary and contract roles, particularly shop-floor workers, artisans, sales and logistics staff, and some mid-level managers in export-led units. This will have a cascading effect on thousands of MSMEs in the supply chain, which collectively account for a large share of employment,' Mishra felt.

Air India cancels Milan-Delhi flight due to maintenance issue
Agency: Mumbai, Aug 17 (PTI) Tata Group-owned private carrier Air India on Sunday said it cancelled its Milan-Delhi flight of August 16 after detecting a maintenance issue at the last minute. Alternative arrangements are being made to fly the passengers to their destination at the earliest, Air India said in a statement. 'Flight AI138 operating from Milan to Delhi on August 16 was cancelled due to a maintenance task identified during pushback," the statement said. 'Our ground team in Milan extended immediate assistance to all the affected passengers, providing hotel accommodation and offering full refunds on cancellation or complimentary rescheduling as opted by the passengers," it said. According to Air India, along with the maintenance issue, the operating crew of the flight come under the mandatory flight duty-time limitation norms. Air India generally operates its Boeing 787-8/9 aircraft fleet to cater to European destinations. The airline, which came under private hands in January 2022, has, of late, been delaying, cancelling some flights at the last minute due to technical and maintenance issues. This is despite airline CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson repeatedly claiming that Air India has carried out comprehensive checks on its Boeing 787 aircraft fleet. A Delhi-bound Air India flight from Bhubaneswar was cancelled just prior to its departure on August 3 due to high cabin temperature. On July 31, an Air India Boeing 787-9 aircraft flying to London had to abort take-off at Delhi airport and return to the bay due to a technical issue. In a message to the customers recently, while listing out the various steps taken after the fatal crash of an AI-171 flight to London soon after take-off from the Ahmedabad airport, Wilson said detailed inspections of its Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft were done and 'no issues were found during inspection". Govt implements Rs 3,000 FASTag pass for private vehicles
'Till 4:30 PM on the first day of the implementation, around 1.2 lakh users purchased and activated the annual pass and about 1.24 lakh transactions were recorded on toll plazas,' it added. New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) State-owned NHAI has implemented the FASTag annual pass across the country from Friday to encourage the use of technology to enhance 'ease of living' for the citizens, according to an official statement. The statement said that providing a seamless and economical travel option to national highway users, the FASTag Annual Pass eliminates the need to frequently recharge FASTag through a one-time fee payment of Rs 3,000 for one year's validity or 200 toll plaza crossings on National Highways and Expressways across the country. The annual pass is applicable to all non-commercial vehicles with a valid FASTag and gets activated within two hours of the one-time fee payment through the Rajmargyatra App or NHAI website. With a penetration rate of around 98 per cent and over 8 crore users, FASTag has revolutionised the Electronic Toll Collection system in the country, the statement said. The introduction of the annual pass facility will not only enhance the FASTag user experience but also make journeys on the National Highways and Expressways more economical and seamless, it added.
