PM Anwar defends KL flat redevelopment, says it's about dignity, not ‘a Chinese agenda'

Yahoo03-05-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, April 25 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reportedly said that redeveloping old housing areas in Kuala Lumpur is not an attempt to displace Malays, but a move to provide more dignified living conditions.
According to a report in Sinar Harian today, Anwar said that land status remains unchanged, including Malay Reserve Land and Malay Agricultural Settlement (MAS) land.
'I don't understand this kind of politics. Is the land Malay Reserve Land? It remains so. Is the land Malay Agricultural Settlement (MAS) land? Yes, it remains so,' he was quoted as saying during the launch of the Warisan Kuala Lumpur (KL) initiative at DBKL tower.
'But old flats like Sri Perlis, which are dilapidated, overcrowded, and lack facilities — we want to fix them, so why is this being politicised?
'We're not trying to take Malay land — we want to replace one-bedroom homes with three-bedroom ones. And even that becomes an issue, supposedly land seizure, a Chinese agenda. This is not about race, this is about the people's dignity,' he reportedly added.
Anwar reportedly said that it was disheartening that some families, including those with children, are still living in cramped one-room flats built over 40 years ago.
He reportedly called for immediate redevelopment with better housing near the same location, while ensuring that the people's needs come before developer interests.
He also reportedly cited examples of housing projects in Penang approved in under 50 days, proving that rapid and efficient development is possible.

PM pledges full truth in Zara Qairina death probe, says would demand answers too if it were his family

KOTA BHARU, Aug 9 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today assured Malaysians that the investigation into the death of Form One Sabah student Zara Qairina Mahathir will be carried out transparently and without compromise. He stressed that the case must not be taken lightly and urged the public to refrain from politicising it or spreading unfounded speculation. 'We are not taking this lightly and my directive is clear – there will be no compromise,' Anwar was quoted by Malay daily Berita Harian as saying at the Rancakkan Madani Kelantan programme at Universiti Sains Malaysia's Health Campus here. He acknowledged public chatter linking the 13-year-old's death to high-profile figures but dismissed the speculation, reiterating that no one will be shielded if found guilty. He said the case involves a loss of life and should be treated with seriousness regardless of a victim's background, warning against making defamatory remarks. 'This is a matter of death, whether the child of the poor or the rich, it is not a game. Even if it was my own family, I would want to know the cause,' he was quoted as saying. He said he has instructed the federal criminal investigation director Datuk M. Kumar to personally monitor the case to prevent any mishandling. Anwar also said he had no concerns about the outcome of the post-mortem process, even if it revealed uncomfortable truths. Yesterday, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) ordered police to exhume Zara Qairina's body for a more thorough post-mortem. She had reportedly fallen from a hostel building before her burial. The AGC said the move was part of several instructions issued to ensure a comprehensive investigation, allowing police to gather additional evidence after reviewing the initial probe report. The case has drawn nationwide attention, with rallies held in multiple Sabah towns to demand justice for the teen, underscoring public outrage and calls for accountability.

Bolivia marks bicentennial amid deepest political, economic crisis

Amid a a variety of national problems, Bolivian President Luis Arce arrives at the bicentennial commemorations of the country's independence in Sucre on Wednesday. Photo by Gabriel Marquez/EPA Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Bolivia marked 200 years as a republic this week, but the atmosphere was far from festive. A deep political crisis, collapsing international reserves, shortages of fuel and U.S. dollars, and a complete rupture within the ruling party overshadowed the bicentennial celebrations. With less than two weeks until the Aug. 17 general election, the ruling Movement for Socialism, or MAS, party -- dominant for the past 20 years -- lacks a unifying candidate. Meanwhile, the opposition, led by businessman Samuel Doria Medina, has capitalized on the crisis and now leads in the polls, though his support remains under 20%. During official celebrations on Wednesday, President Luis Arce avoided any mention of the institutional crisis facing the country and instead focused on defending his economic model. His speech sought to link Bolivia's bicentennial with the political project MAS has promoted since 2006, rooted in the popular movement. Arce reaffirmed the principles of a pluralistic economy, the 2006 nationalization of hydrocarbons, state control over strategic resources and the push for industrialization as essential to achieving economic independence in Bolivia. According to a recent report by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, of ECLAC, Bolivia maintains an expansionary fiscal policy, but it is built on unsustainable foundations. One of them is the subsidy on hydrocarbons, which has weakened the government's ability to respond to other social needs. GDP growth is projected at 1.4% in 2025, with a further slowdown to 1.1% expected in 2026. "An expansion insufficient to reduce poverty, create formal employment or sustain public finances," the report warned. ECLAC warned that the policy "has deteriorated public accounts" and that maintaining it "severely limits fiscal space." The problem is compounded by an economy heavily reliant on gas and minerals, with little progress in diversifying production. "Subsidies must be urgently reviewed," the organization said. In 2024, public spending remained high, while fiscal revenue declined due to lower natural gas output and an unfavorable international climate. Bolivia holds one of the world's largest lithium reserves, but production in 2024 reached only 2,000 tons -- far short of the 150,000-ton goal. The industry has struggled to grow amid institutional instability, lack of transparency in international contracts and limited investment. One of the most alarming indicators for analysts is the level of Bolivia's net international reserves. The country ended 2024 with just $1.976 billion -- only $50 million of it in liquid foreign currency. Adding to this is growing social unrest, as sectors including transportation, agribusiness and commerce report fuel shortages, import restrictions and an economy increasingly strained by soaring food prices. Widespread distrust in Bolivia's electoral, judicial and oversight institutions has deepened the perception of a country adrift. To complete the picture, former President Evo Morales -- barred from running again by the Constitutional Court and lacking official party backing -- called from his stronghold in the Tropic of Cochabamba for voters to cast null ballots in the Aug. 17 election. In a message released during the bicentennial, Morales described the null ballot as a "democratic rebellion" and a referendum against what he called a "delegitimized" election, designed to favor the ruling party and preserve an "old elite democracy" that excludes the people. His supporters, including loyal lawmakers, have opened campaign offices in regions such as Santa Cruz and claim null ballots will exceed 60%, warning: "Without Evo, there are no elections."

Trump credited by Cambodian official with brokering ceasefire with Thailand

[Source] Lim Menghour, director general of the Commission on Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Cambodia's National Assembly, credited former U.S. President Donald Trump with helping secure a ceasefire that took effect at midnight on July 28 after five days of deadly clashes on the Cambodia-Thailand border. Speaking to ABC News that same day, Lim said Prime Minister Hun Manet accepted Trump's offer to mediate 'immediately' during a phone call and described Trump's intervention as decisive in 'bringing about peace.' Ceasefire breakthrough Negotiations in Putrajaya, Malaysia, were led by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and included U.S. and Chinese diplomats. The talks produced an unconditional ceasefire that took effect the same night, ending fierce artillery exchanges and airstrikes in Oddar Meanchey and Surin provinces. At least 43 people were killed during the conflict, including civilians and soldiers and more than 300,000 were forced to flee their homes as schools, homes and public infrastructure suffered severe damage. Trending on NextShark: Trump warned both sides that U.S. trade talks would end and a 36% tariff would be imposed if hostilities continued. This threat led Thailand to drop its opposition to outside mediation and agree to international monitoring. Following the ceasefire, U.S. Commerce officials confirmed new trade deals with both Cambodia and Thailand were signed just before the August 1 deadline. Decades of conflict Tensions along the Cambodia-Thailand border have simmered for decades, rooted in competing claims over land and historic temple sites dating back to the colonial era. The most prominent disputes center around areas near Preah Vihear and Ta Moan Thom temples. The International Court of Justice awarded Preah Vihear temple to Cambodia in 1962, but surrounding land remains contested, fueling periodic confrontations. Trending on NextShark: The latest escalation follows years of unresolved border demarcation and a series of military standoffs in the past two decades. Skirmishes broke out in 2008, 2011 and subsequent years, often triggered by troop movements or nationalist rhetoric. The two countries have yet to finalize a mutually accepted boundary for several stretches of their 800-kilometer frontier. Both governments have used the issue to rally domestic support at times of political pressure, contributing to cycles of tension and violence. Next steps A General Border Committee meeting is scheduled for August 4 to monitor compliance and address ongoing disputes. Trending on NextShark: Thousands of displaced families remain in temporary shelters as schools and infrastructure in border areas await repairs. International relief organizations are delivering aid while foreign diplomats and journalists have visited the region to assess the aftermath and verify adherence to the ceasefire. Analysts caution that unresolved territorial disputes could threaten long-term stability if not addressed through ongoing regional diplomacy.
