Liberty badly missing injured Jonquel Jones' presence on defense

The importance of Jonquel Jones has never been more evident than over the two-plus weeks when she's been sidelined by an ankle sprain.
Jones is the glue of the Liberty on both ends of the floor. Without her, their play looks out of sorts.
Offensively, the Liberty have managed to make do without Jones, for the most part. They're getting plenty of good looks and still lead the league in points per game, though possessions, at times, can lag.
Defensively, though, is where the Liberty missed Jones most.
She is, in a lot of ways, the air traffic controller of the paint and the team's best rim protector.
The Liberty's defensive rating when Jones is on the court is 83.7, but when she's on the sidelines, it balloons to 102.6, per WNBA advanced stats.
The Liberty have struggled without Jonquel Jones (No. 35) on defense.

Jones said this week she was upset that her ankle injury derailed her All-Star campaign. But there's no doubt in Sandy Brondello's mind that Jones, when healthy, has been one of the league's best players.
'Look JJ, I think you see when you look at someone, [do] they also have an impact on their team? And you see that she has a very big impact on our team,' Brondello said. 'She was playing great. She's just this comfort blanket. For me, she's an All-Star.'
It's still unclear when Jones might be cleared to play. The Liberty said June 21 that she'd be out for 4-6 weeks.
Breanna Stewart wasn't happy with the way she started the season, especially when it came to her rebounding efforts.
Stewart had three or fewer rebounds in four of the team's first eight games. To put it bluntly, Stewart said her rebounding 'wasn't up to my standard.'
But as of late, especially with the Liberty missing Jones, Stewart has been far more aggressive in that area.

Stewart notched her third double-double this season Thursday, recording 17 points and a season-high 14 rebounds.
Over the last five games, Stewart is averaging 9.4 boards per game.
'I want to clean up everything for my teammates and really getting back to that standard of just being aggressive on the boards, even on the offensive end,' Stewart said. 'It's hard. It's hard when you have to box out the other teams on defense and I want them to feel that same pressure.'

Stewart didn't rule out the possibility that a backroom, handshake deal has already been made with Collier.
'I know things that you don't,' she quipped. 'So that's all I got to say.'

SEATTLE — On the spot, Cal Raleigh compiled a laundry list of players he would consider for a Mount Rushmore of Seattle Mariners following their 6-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Friday. When identifying who is the face of the Mariners, though, Raleigh immediately landed on Ken Griffey Jr., who he tied for the franchise record for home runs before the All-Star break with 35 with a pair of blasts. 'Trying to do the right thing and trying to keep it rolling. If I can try to be like that guy, it's a good guy to look up to.' From Raleigh's perspective, Griffey would have 'smashed' the major league home run record rather than come up 132 short of Barry Bonds if not for injuries. Thankfully for Raleigh's sake, that admiration hasn't been reserved for the public eye. Whenever Griffey finds himself back in Seattle, which was the case when FIFA Club World Cup games were taking place at Lumen Field, Raleigh has enjoyed his chats with 'The Kid.' Advertisement 'It's always fun to have him around the clubhouse to just talk to him a little bit and figure out how he went about his business,' Raleigh said. 'So, I've talked to him on the phone once or twice as well. So, he's a good one. He's one of the best of all-time. It's hard to beat talking to somebody like that.' It's also hard to find many comparable runs to what Raleigh — who will participate in the Home Run Derby — is in the midst of, and what Griffey accomplished ahead of the 1998 All-Star break. Manager Dan Wilson, who was a teammate of Griffey's in 1998, is among the few folks who can truly put Raleigh's fast start to 2025 in perspective. 'It's remarkable. It feels like he hits a home run every game, that's what it feels like,' Wilson said. 'And I can remember feeling it as a player, that (Griffey) just felt like he hit a home run every day. Again, that's the consistency that (Raleigh) has shown. It hasn't been a streak where he has hit a bunch of home runs in a short amount of time. It's been kind of 10 per month.' Griffey's figures were a tad more mercurial, but just barely (10 in April, eight in May, 14 in June). Raleigh chalked those developments up to his maturing a little over halfway into his fourth full major league season. 'I have the ability to drive the ball out of the ballpark,' Raleigh said. 'I mean, it's part of my game and I'm a strong guy. Getty Images Such an approach is all well and good, but the results have been starkly different. Raleigh has racked up just 36 singles, or one more than his home run total. 'Want to make sure I'm doing everything I can every single day to earn that paycheck and earn what they gave me,' Raleigh said. 'But it's a lot more than just that. It's clear that Emma Raducanu was not happy about Wimbledon's electronic line calling on Friday. During her tightly contested defeat to top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the third round, the 22-year-old called out to the chair umpire over a line call, asking, 'You saw it out as well, right?' 'That call was, like, for sure out,' Raducanu said in her press conference after the match. 'It's kind of disappointing, the tournament here, that the calls can be so wrong, but for the most part, they've been OK. 'It's just, like, I've had a few in my other matches, too, that have been very wrong. So yeah, I don't know. Hopefully, they can fix that.' Earlier this season, Clark missed a few games due to a quad injury. She returned to the hardwood on June 14 and reminded the world why she's a generational talent, scoring 32 points in a win over the New York Liberty. A few games later however, she went down with a groin strain. Advertisement Clark last played for the Fever on June 24 against the Seattle Storm. They've gone 3-1 in the last four games without her, which gives the coaching staff reason to be patient with their All-Star guard. "My goal has always been the same: I don't want this to be something that lingers, that we come back too soon," Fever coach Stephanie White told reporters this week. "We want to make sure that she is 100% ready to go and that we put her long-term health and wellness at the forefront." Unfortunately for WNBA fans, Clark will miss her fifth consecutive game on Saturday when the Fever take on the Los Angeles Sparks. Her status was officially announced on Friday afternoon.
