Viceroy calls semiconductor unit of Vedanta a 'sham op'
NEW DELHI: Continuing its tirade against mining heavyweight
Anil Agarwal
's Vedanta group, US-based Viceroy Research has alleged that the group's semiconductor unit was a "sham commodities trading operation", designed to avoid classification as an NBFC, a charge the conglomerate called baseless.
The short seller, which last week published a scathing report about Vedanta Group and followed it up with similar reports on group companies, in fresh allegations said Vedanta Ltd's subsidiary, Vedanta Semiconductors Pvt Ltd, was part of a scheme to allow the Mumbai-listed firm to remit brand fees to parent Vedanta Resources in April this year, when it faced a severe liquidity crisis. In a statement, Vedanta spokesperson said the group "strongly rejects the baseless allegations made in the report regarding Vedanta Semiconductors Pvt Ltd (VSPL)".
"All business activities of VSPL have been transparently disclosed and are in line with statutory norms," it said.
Viceroy said, "VSPL is a sham commodities trading operation designed to improperly avoid classification as a Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC)". "This scheme was devised to facilitate Vedanta Ltd's remittance of brand fees to Vedanta Resources' (VRL) in April 2025, when it faced a severe liquidity crisis," Viceroy said.

"VSPL's operational illusion needs 24 months of regulatory silence to fulfil its purpose, repaying its offshore lenders and hiding the near-catastrophe of April 2024. While credit analysts are snoozing through the alarm bells, India's regulators are famously light sleepers," it added.

Analysts stay bullish on Infosys after steady Q1 show; Should you buy in?
Infosys Ltd. retained bullish calls from several brokerages after the information technology (IT) major posted better-than-expected earnings for the first quarter of the current financial year (Q1FY26). As the tech firm only raised the lower end of its revenue guidance, analysts said that this reflects heightened global uncertainties. The net profit of Bengaluru-based company came in at ₹6,921 crore, marking a sequential decline of 1.6 per cent. The top line grew 3.3 per cent on quarter-on-quarter (Q-o-Q) to ₹42,279 crore. Both the numbers beat Bloomberg estimates, where analysts had estimated a net profit of ₹6,778 crore and revenue of ₹41,724 crore. The second-largest software-services provider raised the lower end of its guidance to 1 per cent from nil growth it had guided a quarter earlier. A quarter of strong deal wins worth $3.8 billion helped the company raise the guidance at the lower end, Chief Financial Officer Jayesh Sanghrajka said. For the IT giant, financial services and manufacturing, which contributed 28 per cent and 16 per cent to the top line, respectively, were up 5.6 per cent and 12.2 per cent. Growth in manufacturing was a contrast at a time when other companies have seen their revenue hammered due to tariff fears. Analysts on Infosys Q1 results Infosys reported decent Q1 results, with revenue in constant currency (CC) terms significantly ahead of estimates, Nuvama Institutional Equities said. Infosys delivered solid growth, both in magnitude and quality, supported by a reduction in third-party revenue, the brokerage said. While the guidance upgrade was modest, it appears reasonable in light of prevailing macro uncertainties. Nuvama retained their 'Buy' rating with a revised target price of ₹1,850 per share from ₹1,700 apiece earlier. The operating environment remains challenging for Infosys across several verticals, particularly where discretionary spending is under scrutiny, analysts at Centrum Broking said. Segments such as communications, high-tech, and retail continue to witness cautious IT budgets, while financial services and energy offer opportunities, it said. Despite macro headwinds, Infosys' hiring plans for FY26 remain intact, indicating management's confidence in deal conversions and execution capabilities, according to Centrum Broking. The 'Buy' rating was maintained with a revised target price of ₹1,942 apiece. The company narrowed its FY26 revenue growth guidance, reflecting its Q1 performance, robust large deal wins, M&A contribution, and prevailing macroeconomic uncertainty, analysts at Emkay Global said. It expects the first half of the year to outperform the second half. The upper end of the guidance assumes macro stability, while the lower end factors in risks from further deterioration in the external environment, Emkay said. The brokerage maintained FY26-28 earnings estimates and reiterated their 'Buy' rating with a target price of ₹1,750 per share. ALSO READ:

Indian rupee likely to get a fleeting lift on US trade deals-driven risk rally
MUMBAI (Reuters) -The Indian rupee is poised to open higher on Wednesday, supported by upbeat risk appetite following progress on U.S. trade deals, although traders expect the move to be short-lived based on recent price action. The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated the rupee will open in the 86.34-86.36 range versus the U.S. dollar, compared with the close of 86.4075 in the previous session. Recent sessions have shown that the rupee's opening strength often fades quickly. Tepid inflows, one-off dollar outflows, importer hedging, and weak near-term technicals have been cited as factors behind the currency's subdued performance by bankers. "Intraday fades (on dollar/rupee) have not been sticking - importers are lying in wait and speculators are not showing up on the sell side," a currency trader at a Mumbai-based bank said. "It's hard to build a case for a move lower, no matter how positive the Asian cues are." The rupee has been depreciating in a slow, orderly fashion, with volatility remaining subdued. Despite slipping to a near one-month low, the 10-day realised volatility has dropped to 2%, the lowest since January. Asian currencies and equities climbed on Thursday following more positive developments on the U.S. trade front. After the U.S. and Japan reached a deal to reduce tariffs, Washington and the European Union are reportedly moving toward a similar agreement that could include a 15% baseline U.S. tariff on EU goods—mirroring the terms of the Tokyo deal. Japanese shares extended Wednesday's rally and the euro crept toward its highest level in nearly four years on Thursday. Announcements of U.S. trade deals with Japan have boosted optimism that more agreements will be finalised ahead of the August 1 deadline, ANZ said in a note, pointing to an upcoming meeting between U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and China's trade delegation next week. Trade negotiations aside, markets will also be focused on a rate decision from the European Central Bank later in the day. ** One-month non-deliverable rupee forward at 86.46; onshore one-month forward premium at 11.75 paise ** Dollar index down at 97.14 ** Brent crude futures up 0.3% at $68.7 per barrel ** Ten-year U.S. note yield at 4.38% ** As per NSDL data, foreign investors bought a net $535.4 million worth of Indian shares on July 22 ** NSDL data shows foreign investors sold a net $9.4 million worth of Indian bonds on July 22 (Reporting by Nimesh Vora; Editing by Janane Venkatraman)
