NEW DELHI: Continuing its tirade against mining heavyweight

's Vedanta group, US-based Viceroy Research has alleged that the group's semiconductor unit was a "sham commodities trading operation", designed to avoid classification as an NBFC, a charge the conglomerate called baseless.
The short seller, which last week published a scathing report about Vedanta Group and followed it up with similar reports on group companies, in fresh allegations said Vedanta Ltd's subsidiary, Vedanta Semiconductors Pvt Ltd, was part of a scheme to allow the Mumbai-listed firm to remit brand fees to parent Vedanta Resources in April this year, when it faced a severe liquidity crisis. In a statement, Vedanta spokesperson said the group "strongly rejects the baseless allegations made in the report regarding Vedanta Semiconductors Pvt Ltd (VSPL)".
"All business activities of VSPL have been transparently disclosed and are in line with statutory norms," it said.
Viceroy said, "VSPL is a sham commodities trading operation designed to improperly avoid classification as a Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC)". "This scheme was devised to facilitate Vedanta Ltd's remittance of brand fees to Vedanta Resources' (VRL) in April 2025, when it faced a severe liquidity crisis," Viceroy said.

"VSPL's operational illusion needs 24 months of regulatory silence to fulfil its purpose, repaying its offshore lenders and hiding the near-catastrophe of April 2024. While credit analysts are snoozing through the alarm bells, India's regulators are famously light sleepers," it added.

Microsoft says some SharePoint server hackers now use ransomware

A cyber-espionage campaign centered on vulnerable versions of Microsoft's server software now involves the deployment of ransomware, Microsoft said in a late Wednesday blog post. In the post, citing 'expanded analysis and threat intelligence,' Microsoft said a group it dubs 'Storm-2603' is using the vulnerability to seed the ransomware, which typically works by paralyzing victims' networks until a digital currency payment is made. The disclosure marks a potential escalation in the campaign, which has already hit at least 400 victims, according to Netherlands-based cybersecurity firm Eye Security. Unlike typical state-backed hacker campaigns, which are aimed at stealing data, ransomware can cause widespread disruption depending on where it lands. The figure of 400 victims represents a sharp rise from the 100 organisations cataloged over the weekend. Eye Security says the figure is likely an undercount. 'There are many more, because not all attack vectors have left artifacts that we could scan for,' said Vaisha Bernard, the chief hacker for Eye Security, which was among the first organisations to flag the breaches. The details of most of the victim organisations have not yet been fully disclosed, but on Wednesday a representative for the National Institutes of Health confirmed that one of the organisation's servers had been compromised. 'Additional servers were isolated as a precaution,' he said. The news of the compromise was first reported by the Washington Post. The spy campaign kicked off after Microsoft failed to fully patch a security hole in its SharePoint server software, kicking off a scramble to fix the vulnerability when it was discovered. Microsoft and its tech rival, Google owner Alphabet, have both said Chinese hackers are among those taking advantage of the flaw. Beijing has denied the claim.

Trump raises base tariff to 15%, hints at 50% cap ahead of Aug 1 deadline

US President Donald Trump announced that there will be a baseline tariff starting at 15 per cent and going up to 50 per cent on all imports, during an artificial intelligence summit in Washington on Wednesday (local time). 'We'll have a straight, simple tariff of anywhere between 15 and 50 per cent,' Trump said, adding that countries with which the US has strained diplomatic ties could face duties at the higher end of the range. Trump administration confirms August 1 deadline The announcement comes just days before the revised rates are set to take effect on August 1, and marks a shift from Trump's earlier stance. At the beginning of July, the administration had proposed tariffs between 10 and 15 per cent on imports from over 150 countries. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick reiterated the timeline in a CBS News interview on July 20, noting that many smaller economies in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa would face lower tariffs closer to 10 per cent. ' The new rates will be effective from August 1,' Lutnick had confirmed. 'That's a hard deadline. Countries can still negotiate after that date, but the tariffs will apply in the meantime.' White House prioritises tariff-based deals over formal trade pacts In a significant departure from conventional trade diplomacy, the White House is now treating tariff notifications themselves as de facto deals. A report by Bloomberg suggests that President Trump is moving away from formalised trade agreements and using tariff levels to set the terms of engagement. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said earlier this month that few nations should expect tariff-free access. 'There's not a lot of evidence right now that we're going to get a tariff-free deal,' he noted. 'The global trade landscape has fundamentally changed.' Reduced tariffs for pro-US markets Despite the steep tariff band, Trump has indicated that nations willing to open their markets to US firms could secure lower duties. One such example is Japan. Trump confirmed this week that a planned 25 per cent tariff on Japanese goods had been lowered to 15 per cent after Tokyo agreed to lift import restrictions and back a US-led investment plan worth $550 billion. The European Union is also engaged in ongoing talks. 'If they agree to open up the union to American businesses, then we will let them pay a lower tariff,' Trump said, adding that a simplified rate structure would apply where detailed negotiations were not feasible. India seeks interim trade pact before deadline India is among the countries racing to finalise a bilateral arrangement. Five rounds of negotiations have taken place since March 2025, with the latest held in Washington between July 14 and 18. Talks are reportedly focused on market access for US tech firms, easing agricultural regulatory barriers, and lowering duties on Indian exports such as pharmaceuticals and textiles. While a formal deal has yet to be announced, both sides have expressed interest in fast-tracking an interim agreement before the August deadline. India-UK likely to sign FTA today India and the UK are set to sign a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on Thursday, marking a major milestone in their bilateral relationship. The deal, set to be signed by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Keir Starmer at Chequers, comes after years of negotiations and is expected to significantly boost trade and investment between the two nations. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and UK Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds will formalise the pact, followed by a business summit featuring top Indian and British executives. The agreement will reduce, and in some cases eliminate, tariffs on the vast majority of goods traded between the two countries, enhancing Indian exports in sectors like textiles, jewellery, and leather, while also increasing UK access to the Indian market.

Indian Rupee gains amid soft dollar index; opens higher at 86.33/$

The Indian rupee traded higher on Thursday, providing some relief after a consecutive losing streak as pressure persisted due to continued dollar demand driven by foreign outflows. The domestic currency opened 9 paise higher at 86.33 against the dollar on Thursday, according to Bloomberg. The rupee has witnessed nearly 0.75 per cent depreciation in the current calendar year. Despite a decline in the Dollar Index and a rally in risk assets, the Indian rupee has not registered any significant gains, reflecting the presence of short positions and sustained dollar demand in the system, according to Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) net bought $1.76 billion in May, after a net sell of $1.6 billion in April. The central bank bought $9.12 billion, while it sold $7.36 billion of foreign currency in May. The rupee opened is expected to close around 86.33 and is expected to trade in the range of 86.10 to 86.60, Bhansali said. "Exporters have a good opportunity to hedge by selling dollars at current levels. Importers, however, may consider holding off on hedging, as the rupee is likely to strengthen despite headwinds such as the lack of progress on the U.S.-India trade deal, especially when other global trade agreements are moving forward." Attention now shifts to next week's US interest rate decision, which will be a key directional trigger, Jateen Trivedi, VP research analyst - commodity and currency at LKP Securities, said. "Rupee is expected to trade within a range of 85.80–86.70," he added. Meanwhile, equity markets in Asia rose amid optimism fueled by US-Japan trade deal and positive signals pointing to a potential agreement with the European Union. The EU and US are moving towards a trade agreement that could include a 15% US baseline tariff on all EU exports, as per reports. The dollar index, a measure of the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was down 0.06 per cent at 97.15.
