Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviews execution of three new criminal laws in city
NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Monday chaired a review meeting in the national capital with Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to review the implementation of three new criminal laws in the national capital.
The meeting reviewed the implementation and current status of various new provisions related to police, prisons, courts, prosecution and forensics.
Among those in attendance were Union Home Secretary, Chief Secretary of the National Capital Territory, Commissioner of Delhi Police, Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), Director of the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) and senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Delhi government. The three new laws are Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
These laws were conceptualised with the vision of the Prime Minister to replace colonial-era laws that persisted post-independence and to reform the judicial system by shifting the focus from punishment to justice. They came into force on July 1, 2024, replacing the three old criminal laws including Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act.

2 girls sexually assaulted at Goa birthday party, 3 arrested
Three minor girls who were invited to celebrate a birthday were allegedly sexually assaulted in North Goa's Bambolim, leading to the arrest of two men. The accused, identified as Altaf Mahboob Mujawar (19) and Om Vinay Naik (21), were taken into custody by the Agashi families of the victims filed a missing complaint on the night of June 8, saying that two girls, aged 13 and 15, had been missing since June 7. Around the same time, another complaint was lodged regarding the disappearance of a 11-year-old girl. Investigations revealed that all three girls had gone North Goa Superintendent of Police Rahul Gupta allegedly tried to keep the matter under wraps. However, once the news began surfacing in the media, he formed a special police team to trace the missing girls. Following the formation of the special team, the victims were traced to a hotel in the Calangute area. Police rescued the girls and detained two men present with them. During the investigation, the girls informed the police that they had gone to Calangute to celebrate a birthday. It was then discovered that the 15-year-old and the 11-year-old were sexually registered two separate cases under IPC Sections 137(2), 64(1), 74, 75(1), Section 8(2) of the Goa Children's Act, and Sections 4, 8, and 12 of the POCSO Act. The two men detained earlier were formally Wednesday night, the police also arrested the owner of the hotel where the incident occurred. Rajat Chavan, owner of Krishna Mahadev Hotel in Baga, was arrested by Calangute police for allowing the girls to enter the hotel without parental strict action, Rahul Gupta, Superintendent of Police, said, 'The police are applying for the sealing of the hotel and the cancellation of its license.' He added, 'If any man is given a room without the presence of their family members or relatives, hotel management and owners will not be spared. It is a violation of the Goa Children's Act.' Case registered over display of Pak flag at prayer event in Kochi
KOCHI: The police have registered a case after the Pakistani national flag was displayed during a prayer meeting conducted by a Protestant group at Udayamperoor. The incident took place at the Jesus Generation Auditorium, where a 40-day-long prayer session has been under way since June 1. The police said the flag was displayed as part of a 'World peace prayer' segment during which flags of multiple countries were showcased on Tuesday. Among them was the Pakistani flag, which drew controversy. Following the incident, BJP Ernakulam district secretary Srikuttan Thundathil filed a complaint with the Udayamperoor police. Based on the complaint, a case was registered against the event organisers and the auditorium owner under Section 196(1)(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to promoting enmity between different groups. The police on Wednesday summoned and questioned the event organisers at the Udayamperoor police station as part of the investigation.
