Nawabzada Mohsin joins PML-N

ISLAMABAD: In a move underscoring the evolving political landscape in the country, Nawabzada Mohsin Ali Khan, a former stalwart of the embattled Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), formally joined the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Friday.
Khan, who had earlier expressed unwavering support for PTI chief Imran Khan's leadership, has now extended allegiance to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's vision, marking a notable shift in the province's political contours.
The defection comes at a time of considerable flux within the political landscape, where ideological consistency often takes a backseat to strategic recalibration.
During a meeting with the prime minister, accompanied by his son and several close associates, in the presence of Federal Minister Amir Muqam – who leads the PML-N's efforts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – Khan endorsed the party's developmental agenda and pledged to advance its policies in the province.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the move and called on Khan to play an active role in strengthening the party's presence in the province. The development comes amid growing fissures within the PTI and escalating political competition across key constituencies.
Khan's political journey has been marked by multiple shifts in party affiliation, reflecting a trajectory driven more by political pragmatism than ideological commitment.
A longstanding political figure in Karak district, he has contested elections at both the provincial and national levels under various party banners.
In the 1988 and 1990 general elections, Khan won the PF-33 (Karak-II) seat as a candidate of the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI), defeating Zafar Azam on both occasions.
He later joined the Awami National Party (ANP) and played an active role in the 2014 Political Parties Joint Committee on FATA Reforms, advocating for constitutional integration and democratic representation in the erstwhile tribal areas.

12 PTI workers arrested for rioting granted bail by Karachi court

A Karachi court on Tuesday granted bail to 12 workers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) who were detained on charges of rioting, stone-pelting, and attacking police during a protest rally in the metropolis on August 5. The judicial magistrate for District East approved the bail pleas filed by defence lawyers and ordered the release of the accused against surety bonds of Rs5,000 each. Earlier, police had produced the accused before the court and sought their physical remand for further interrogation. According to the investigation officer (IO), the PTI workers had blocked the road during a rally led by senior party leaders, including Firdous Shamim Naqvi, Awab Alvi, and Raja Azhar, at Hassan Square. The IO claimed the protest turned violent when the accused pelted stones at law enforcers and attacked them with sticks, injuring a police officer identified as Aijaz. The IO requested physical custody of the accused for criminal record office verification, adding that several other suspects were still at large. Later, PTI Sindh President Haleem Adil Sheikh visited the city court to meet the released workers. Speaking to media persons on the occasion, he said that the bail order was a victory for truth and justice. The protest at Hassan Square was peaceful, and that the FIR registered against party workers was fabricated, he claimed. "Police used baton charge and fired shells on peaceful demonstrators," he alleged, adding that his name was not included in the FIR but was later inserted in the remand papers. He reiterated the party's resolve to continue the protest movement until PTI founder Imran Khan is released from jail. "The frustration among the youth is growing with each passing day. Continued incarceration of Imran Khan is not in the country's interest," he added.

Bankruptcy law reforms to boost industrial stability: SAPM Haroon Akhtar

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan on Wednesday said that proposed reforms to Pakistan's bankruptcy legislation will serve as a 'comprehensive and supportive legal framework' to ensure industrial stability and revive struggling enterprises. He made these remarks while chairing a high-level meeting of sub-committees on the Bankruptcy Law and prevention of undue harassment by state authorities, according to a press release. The meeting was attended by PM's Coordinator Rana Ehsan Afzal, representatives from the Pakistan Business Council, Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), various chambers of commerce, the Anti-Money Laundering authority, and other stakeholders. Pakistan plans to revisit FTAs, mulls bankruptcy law The committees proposed amendments to the Corporate Rehabilitation Act, 2018, including the removal of eligibility thresholds based on receivables, a formal mechanism for stay orders through judicial directives, relief for companies facing winding-up orders, inclusion of companies availing relief under SBP Circular No. 29, and a comprehensive system for asset valuation and mediation. The Corporate Restructuring Companies Act, 2016, was also reviewed, with the committee noting that the Corporate Rehabilitation Board's operations have been delayed due to stringent appointment criteria and budgetary constraints. Khan said the reforms will encourage banks and borrowers to work together under a collaborative framework. Govt to save Rs70bn annually through 100 reforms across 24 ministries The subcommittee on undue institutional harassment also proposed a legal framework to protect the autonomy of the SECP and promote foreign investment through a non-political, interference-free environment. 'Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's vision is clear: to revive sick industrial units and eliminate undue harassment from state authorities,' Khan said, praising the sub-committees' work and commitment to business-friendly reforms.

The court also ordered that the two not be arrested during this time. May 9 Riots The May 9 riots erupted nationwide following the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan, after which PTI leaders and workers staged protests targeting both civil and military installations, including Jinnah House and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. The military condemned the events as a "Black Day" and decided to try the protesters under the Army Act. As a result of the unrest, many PTI members were arrested and tried in military courts. In December, a military court convicted 25 individuals, including Imran Khan's nephew, Hassan Khan Niazi, and later sentenced 60 more. The military trials had initially been halted following a Supreme Court ruling but were resumed following the court's instructions to finalise pending cases and announce judgments for those involved in the violent incidents.
