Rangers next manager clues decoded by the Jury with four high profile names pitched to Ibrox takeover kings

Daily Record10-05-2025

If you had to pick a Rangers manager with no previous connection to the club, who would you go for?
Scott McDermott: Sean Dyche. He's out of work, has vast experience of the British game and will be aware of the demands and expectations at Ibrox. He'd bring organisation and discipline. Also, going up against Brendan Rodgers won't faze him.
Andy Newport: Jose Mourinho gave a glimpse of his box office value during his run in with Gers earlier this year but the Special One will require a special wage packet. Marco Rose is a name that won't go away and shouldn't be discounted. He's averaged almost 2 points per game as a boss and has big club experience. He's worth considering
Scott Burns: I would try for somebody like Gareth Southgate. He did well with England. He has a profile and a presence and really progressed their national team. He has also worked in a high-pressured environment where results are everything.
Can you see Brendan Rodgers giving some of his fringe players a chance over the final three games?
Scott McDermott: He doesn't like tinkering too much with a huge game around the corner and he'll want momentum going into the Scottish Cup Final in a fortnight. I'd expect Yang to get some minutes and it would be nice to see Johnny Kenny get a chance to impress.
Andy Newport: He's already made clear the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Callum McGregor will get a rest so expect the likes of Dane Murray, Luke McCowan and Johnny Kenny to get some minutes.
Scott Burns: I would expect the likes of Auston Trusty and Luke McCowan to get more game time over the final three league games. They can give their manager something to think about ahead of the cup final.
Do you think St Mirren can get back into Europe or do you expect Dundee United to end their dream?
Scott McDermott: I've got a sneaky feeling the Buddies could win at Tannadice and put themselves right in contention for that Euro spot. United have gone off the boil a bit whereas St Mirren are playing with nothing to lose. A victory on Tayside could set up some finish.
Andy Newport: It's certainly in United's hands with a five point lead and three games to play. A draw would pretty much secure fifth given Saints go to Parkhead on the final day so maybe the Buddies shouldn't be in a rush to dig out the passports.
Scott Burns: If St Mirren can win at Tannadice then the cat would certainly be amongst the pigeons. Dundee United have injury problems but I think they can still avoid defeat against the Buddies this afternoon and that should get the job all but done.
Ross County are currently in 11th place in the Premiership. Who do you think will finish in the relegation play-off position?
Scott McDermott: I can't see the Staggies getting out of 11th. If they pick up something at McDiarmid Park today they'll give themselves a chance but I think Kilmarnock and Dundee will have enough to steer clear of the dreaded play-off.
Andy Newport: It will come down to next Wednesday Dens dust up between Tony Doc's Dark Blues and Don Cowie's Staggies. I fancy Simon Murray to provide the goals that edge the Dees clear of danger.

Glenn Middleton hails 'some 3 years' at Dundee United as winger opts for English switch

Glenn Middleton has called time on his stint with Dundee United after 'some 3 years' at Tannadice. The winger, who was out of contract this summer, was made an offer to stay at United described by the club as '[reflecting] our desire to retain the winger's services'. However, after considering his options, the 25-year-old has decided to take the next step of his career in England, having signed for Doncaster Rovers. Rovers will compete in EFL League One next season after securing promotion by winning the League Two title last term. And Middleton, who ultimately made 115 appearances for the Tangerines, hailed his rollercoaster stint at Tannadice on social media. He said on X: 'From starting in Europe to finishing in Europe with a relegation and promotion in between, it's been some 3 years. 'Playing over 100 games for the club has been an honour. To all the staff and players I've worked with it's been a pleasure. Thank you Dundee United FC.' United, meanwhile, thanked the Doncaster-bound star for his efforts in tangerine, saying: 'Dundee United can confirm Glenn Middleton has left the club after opting to join EFL League One outfit Doncaster Rovers. 'A contract offer which reflected our desire to retain the winger's services was made to his representatives, however, after 115 appearances in tangerine, Glenn has decided to bring the curtain down on his United career. 'We'd like to place on record our sincere gratitude to Glenn for his contributions and professionalism during his three-year stint on Tayside, as we wish him the best of luck for his future endeavours.'

Russell Martin can transform Rangers as ex-owner loves him

And to this day, the ex-MK Dons owner insists he loves Martin dearly for the work he did at his beloved club. Winkelman gave the Rangers managerial candidate his big break in management in the English lower leagues. The 39-year-old had the Dons playing free-flowing football and quickly attracted the attentions of Swansea. But it wasn't just what he delivered on the pitch. His old boss says he brought the whole club together as his impact went beyond just the training pitch and a game on a Saturday. Winkelman told the Scottish Sun: "I love the man. I wish him every success. It won't just be a little tweak here or there to what happens on the pitch. 'Throughout the club, he'll get everyone together. 'Russ has an understanding of the whole club, and great knowledge of how all the parts come together. 'It's not just about coaching for him, he understands how the club all fits. 'This is probably the kind of talk that impressed the Rangers bosses in his interview. 'You need that understanding if you're competing at the top of the Premiership. It's as tough as it can be. 'I'll be thrilled for him if he gets the job. I'll be excited to see what he can do. 'Rangers will certainly be an attractive team to watch if Russ gets the job. 'I'll be watching for Rangers' results now. You tend to do that with people you really like.' Winkelman once appointed Roberto Di Matteo, who went onto win the Champions League with Chelsea, and former Liverpool and Manchester United star Paul Ince. He holds Martin in similar regard, adding: 'Russ was one of the best appointments I made, and I like to think I made a few. 'I gave Roberto Di Matteo his first job, and he ended up winning the Champions League with Chelsea. 'I gave Paul Ince his second job in management and that went well, too. 'I'm quite pleased with my track record in appointing managers.
