
Saudi Arabia shuts 267 digital platforms to boost unified government services
The move reflects a broader commitment to improving the quality of government digital services and ensuring platform integration in line with Saudi Arabia's strategic digital transformation goals.
According to a statement from the DGA, the closures come under a regulatory framework that includes new governance standards, the adoption of shared technical resources such as the National Single Sign-On system, e-payment gateways, and the Government Integration Channel.
All platforms are also required to adhere to the unified design code known as the 'Platform Code,' enabling streamlined and effective digital services.
The initiative is part of the 'Inclusive Government' program launched in 2022, which has reduced the number of government digital platforms from 817 to 550 as of the end of H1 2025.
The program aims to optimize government resource usage and deliver more efficient and user-centered digital services, supporting the Kingdom's broader digital transformation and improving public satisfaction.
The DGA emphasized the importance of collaboration among government entities in developing and managing domains and digital platforms.
Central to the strategy is the national app "Tawakkalna," operated by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), which is being positioned as the primary gateway for accessing unified government services.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to building an integrated digital ecosystem that enhances the performance of digital platforms and elevates the Kingdom's position in global digital government indicators.

Turkey nears exit from costly FX-protected deposit scheme
ANKARA - Turkey is on the verge of ending a scheme protecting deposits from currency depreciation that is estimated to have cost $60 billion, another step to abandon unorthodox economic policies that triggered a lira crisis several years ago. Turkish officials said the KKM scheme, introduced in late 2021, will be terminated by the end of 2025, though many bankers believe the exit could come even sooner. The value of deposits covered by the scheme has shrunk from a peak of $140 billion to just $11.8 billion, a figure now seen as negligible in the context of Turkey's $1.3 trillion economy. The exit from KKM has progressed much faster than initial market expectations. Under the scheme, individuals and businesses were able to deposit lira in special accounts that were protected against exchange rate losses. The lira lost 44% of its value against the dollar in 2021, 29% in 2022, 37% in 2023, and 16% last year. Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek told Reuters this week the KKM balance had declined steadily thanks to the government's exit strategy and tight monetary policy. The KKM stock has fallen to 478 billion lira ($11.8 billion) from 3.4 trillion lira in August 2023. Its share of total deposits slid to 2% from 26.2%. Until May 2023 elections, the central bank implemented an unorthodox policy, backed by President Tayyip Erdogan, of low interest rates despite high inflation. After securing a new term, Erdogan backed a U-turn towards more orthodox policy, which brought higher interest rates to curb soaring inflation. With inflation having eased to 33.5% from a peak of 75% last year, the bank has begun cutting rates again. According to Reuters calculations based on central bank reports and budget data, the total cost to the Turkish state of the KKM is estimated at nearly $60 billion to the end of 2024 - making it one of the most expensive regulatory measures in Turkey's recent economic history. Last year Turkey ended other such policies, including a rule that forced banks to buy government bonds, effectively ending state control over the bond market. Earlier this year, the opening and renewal of KKM accounts for corporates was halted. Since the return on KKM accounts is capped at 40% of the policy rate, they have long ceased to offer a meaningful alternative to regular lira deposits. As the remaining KKM accounts held by individuals mature, a final regulation is expected to prohibit new openings and renewals, completing the phase-out of the scheme. Meanwhile, the lira has continued to weaken but at a slower pace. This year it has depreciated by 13%. ($1 = 40.6772 liras)

Dana Gas first-half profit up on strength of Egypt operations
Dana Gas, one of the largest private natural gas companies in the Middle East, recorded an increase in first-half profit despite lower oil prices, underpinned by its operations in Egypt. Net profit attributable to equity holders in the six months to the end of June rose 2.7 per cent annually to Dh270 million ($73.5 million), the Sharjah-based company said on Friday in a filing to the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, where its shares trade. Net revenue for the first half declined 4.4 per cent to Dh532 million, on lower realised hydrocarbon prices and production declines in Egypt, partially offset by higher output in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region and improved pricing in Egypt, it said. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and depreciation – a key measure for profitability – was 8.7 per cent lower at Dh105 million. For the second quarter, profit was down 9.7 per cent to Dh112 million, while revenue dropped 3.7 per cent to Dh257 million. Ebitda slid 13 per cent to Dh47 million. The company paid out its 2024 cash dividend of Dh385 million in May. Dana Gas is "optimistic" for the second half of the year, as it "remain[s] focused on execution, value creation and sustaining dividend payments to our shareholders", chief executive Richard Hall said. 'We are now seeing the results of a proactive, hands-on approach across the business, one that keeps us close to the operations and focused on delivery," he added. Set up in 2005, Dana Gas has exploration and production assets in Egypt, the Iraqi Kurdish region and the UAE, with proven reserves exceeding one billion barrels of oil equivalent and average production of about 55,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day, its website says. In Egypt, the Arab world's most populous economy, Dana Gas made "solid progress" in the delivery of its $100 million investment programme. Last month, the company announced the successful drilling and completion of Begonia-2, the first of 11 planned wells, confirming nine billion cubic feet of gas reserves. The additional gas in Egypt is forecast to generate cost savings of more than $1 billion for the country's economy by reducing reliance on imported liquefied natural gas and fuel oil. The Egypt investment programme is "an important step forward, both for Dana Gas and for Egypt's energy sector ... [to] unlock more of the country's gas potential", Mr Hall said. Meanwhile, in Kurdistan, production at the Khor Mor gasfield remained strong during the first half 2025, with daily output exceeding 500 million standard cubic feet per day.
