Malaysia launches ILMU: First locally built AI language model
Speaking at the ASEAN AI Malaysia Summit 2025 (AAIMS25), Anwar said the goal is to position Malaysia as an 'AI nation' that uses technology to improve governance, drive innovation and uplift communities.
'This is a generational opportunity. AI can bridge divides, empower small businesses, strengthen public services and expand access to healthcare, education and justice for all,' he said.
Developed by YTL AI Labs in collboration with Universiti Malaya, ILMU integrates local languages and culture with world-class performance.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo called it a 'groundbreaking Malaysian innovation' that safeguards linguistic and cultural identity while delivering global-standard AI capabilities.
Fluent in Bahasa Melayu, Malaysian English (Manglish) and dialects such as Kecek Kelate, ILMU is built on YTL AI Cloud for enterprise-grade performance and local data residency.
It reportedly matches or outperforms GPT-4o, DeepSeek and Llama 3.1 in key benchmarks, and leads globally in Malay language understanding.
The model can process and generate text, voice and images, enabling applications across multiple sectors.

‘Crazy': Farhash Wafa Salvador denies involvement in Rafizi son attack amid rumours
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — Entrepreneur Datuk Seri Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak has reportedly denied today rumours linking him to the attack on Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's son. Malaysiakini reported the former political secretary of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim replying with a one-word response about the allegations: 'Crazy.' This comes after former economy minister Rafizi said two male suspects on a motorcycle, dressed in black and wearing helmets had tailed his wife's car before grabbing his son and stabbing him with a syringe. Yesterday, Rafizi said that a group of whistleblowers had approached him last week with information on a scandal, and alleged that an attack on his son was meant to stop him from pursuing the matter. He said in his opinion this was a strategy to ensure that he drops the matter altogether. Rafizi said police were investigating the possible link between the attack and his work, which he believes is connected. He explained that his son will need repeated blood tests over six months to rule out drugs, poison, or viral infections. Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar has since said the police have tightened security measures for Rafizi following the attack. Formerly Perak PKR chief, Farhash lost the contest for Gombak PKR division chief in 2022 to Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. Farhash is or had been a director and/or shareholder in at least ten private companies including MMAG Holdings Bhd, HeiTech Padu Bhd, 7-Eleven Malaysia Holdings Bhd, Apex Equity Holdings Bhd, Berjaya Construction Bhd, and Pacific Samudera Sdn Bhd.

Anwar says Rafizi, Nik Nazmi to stay active in Dewan Rakyat despite quitting Cabinet
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad will continue to serve and play an active role in the Dewan Rakyat, despite their resignations as ministers. Anwar said the duo's resignations were personal decisions based on their principles, and the government respects their choice. 'The government respects this decision and at the same time expresses confidence that both YBs will continue to serve and play an active role as MP for the wellbeing of the people and the progress of the nation,' he said in a Parliamentary written reply. He was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Shahidan Kasim (PN–Arau) regarding claims of an allegedly unstable government following the resignations. The prime minister said the government remains strong with the firm support of all component parties forming the current administration. 'Close cooperation and mutual respect among these parties form the foundation for the continuity of the nation's administration and the implementation of the reform agenda,' he said. Rafizi resigned from his post as economy minister in May, saying that his loss to Nurul Izzah Anwar in the recent PKR deputy presidency race meant he no longer had the mandate to implement the party's reform agenda in government. Nik Nazmi, who also failed to retain his position as PKR vice-president in the latest party polls, announced his resignation shortly after, citing similar reasons.

Malaysian students from UK unis share ideas with PM to tackle brain drain
KUALA LUMPUR: Representatives from the Malaysian Students' Council in the United Kingdom and Eire (UKEC) shared ideas and suggestions with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on addressing Malaysia's long-standing brain drain issue during a courtesy call to his office recently. In a Facebook post, Anwar said the meeting saw UKEC propose opportunities for more strategic collaboration between the federal government and the council through the Higher Education Ministry, covering various fields within existing policies. The prime minister said he valued the students' perspectives and stressed the need for all stakeholders to fully utilise existing government structures and frameworks to avoid duplication. "We must ensure that engagement and dialogue continue regularly so that various issues can be coordinated effectively and systematically," he said. Anwar added that such collaborations could open new avenues for Malaysian talent abroad to contribute to national development, whether by returning home or through overseas initiatives connected to Malaysia. The UKEC delegation, led by chairman Vincent Tang, represents more than 16,000 Malaysian students studying in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. "They are all currently on summer break and undergoing internships at private companies and government-linked companies (GLCs) in Malaysia and abroad," he said.
