PNB scam: Court clears release of Nirav Modi's ₹66.3 cr assets for recovery
A special court in Mumbai has permitted the release of properties valued at ₹66.33 crore, belonging to fugitive jeweller Nirav Modi and his sister Purvi Modi. These assets had been attached by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as part of the money laundering investigation in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam.
The court approved a request made by PNB to release the assets so they could be sold or auctioned to recover the losses caused by the fraud. The ED had initially attached the properties while investigating Modi and others in the multi-crore bank fraud.
Special Judge AV Gujarathi, who heard cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), passed the order on June 17. The judge also directed PNB to provide an undertaking confirming that the amount earned from the sale would be recovered if needed in future.
The assets consist of jewellery, coins, watches, and cash found at Nirav Modi's residence in Samudra Mahal, Worli, Mumbai, worth ₹40.83 crore. There is also a flat valued at ₹19.50 crore in Purvi Modi's name and other movable items found at the same address. The total loss reported by a consortium of banks, led by PNB, exceeds ₹8,526 crore — much higher than the value of attached properties, which total approximately ₹2,324.97 crore.
ED raises no objection to release
The ED informed the court that it had no objection to releasing the assets, provided certain conditions were met. After reviewing the submissions, the judge noted that Nirav Modi remains a fugitive and granted PNB's request to release the properties.
Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi are the main accused in the ₹13,500-crore PNB scam. While Choksi is facing legal proceedings in Belgium, Modi has been in a UK prison since 2019.
Earlier on May 15, 2025, the UK High Court had once again denied bail to Nirav Modi, marking his tenth unsuccessful attempt since his arrest in 2019.
The Enforcement Directorate posted on X: "The UK High Court has once again refused to grant bail to Nirav Modi, the mastermind of the $1 billion fraud against PNB, while hearing his fourth bail application on Thursday, 15/05/2025."
The agency further said: "After detailed deliberations on the arguments of the defence (Nirav Modi) and counter arguments of the prosecution (Government of India), written submissions by the ED (which highlighted the money laundering aspects of laundering of proceeds through shell companies to external jurisdictions including the UK) and considering the extent of fraud (part of which has already been attached/confiscated by the ED and returned to the victim banks), the UK High Court dismissed the application and refused to grant bail to Nirav Modi."
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) confirmed the decision in a press statement: "Fresh Bail Petition filed by Nirav Deepak Modi was rejected by the High Court of Justice, King's Bench Division, London. The bail arguments were strongly opposed by the Crown Prosecution Service advocate who was ably assisted by a strong CBI team consisting of investigating and law officers who travelled to London for this purpose."
The CBI added: "CBI could successfully defend the arguments which resulted in rejection of the bail. Nirav Deepak Modi has been in UK prison since 19th March 2019. It may be recalled that Neerav Modi is a fugitive economic offender who is wanted for Trial in India in a Bank fraud case of CBI for defrauding Punjab National Bank for Rs. 6498.20 crore... This is his 10th bail petition since his detention in the UK which was successfully defended by CBI through Crown Prosecution Service, London."
Extradition approved
Nirav Modi was arrested in the UK in March 2019. The UK High Court has already approved his extradition to India. The ED filed its money laundering case against him and Mehul Choksi in 2018, and multiple assets have since been seized. Modi's efforts to block extradition, including a petition to the UK Supreme Court in 2022, have all failed.

ED conducts search operation at 11 locations in Bihar Constable Recruitment Scam 2023
Enforcement Directorate (ED), Patna Zonal Office conducted search operations on Thursday (June 19, 2025) at 11 locations in Patna, Nalanda, Ranchi, Lucknow and Kolkata in Bihar Constable Recruitment Scam of 2023. ED in its official press statement on Friday (June 20, 2025) stated that during these searches several incriminating material, documents and digital devices have been found and seized. The ED further stated that as per the FIR No. 16/2023 dated 31.10.2023 registered by Economic Offence Unit (EOU), Patna and the subsequent chargesheet dated 22.08.2024, the Central Selection Board of Constable (CSBC), which conducted the Bihar Constable Recruitment of 2023, awarded the question paper printing contract to M/s Caltex Multiventures Pvt. Ltd., a company formed in 2021 that reportedly lacked prior experience or its own printing press. ED stressed that this company had an undisclosed agreement with M/s Blessing Secured Press Pvt. Ltd., whose director, Kaushik Kumar Kar, was blacklisted due to involvement in previous paper leak cases. 'Kaushik Kumar Kar helped to incorporate a new company M/s Caltex Multiventures Pvt. Ltd. and used close associates to secure the tender indirectly. Sanjeev Mukhiya, a habitual offender involved in several paper leak cases, and his gang reportedly gathered information about the printing press, warehouse, and transportation vehicles. Question papers were then removed from sealed boxes during transit from the warehouse to examination centres and sold via social media, 'The ED said the press statement. During the searches, incriminating documents have been found at several spots like handwritten candidates lists with OMR Nos of their answer sheets, fake degree certificates, documents of several candidates, blank cheques seemingly submitted by candidates, handwritten questions with candidate lists etc. ED stated that further investigation is under progress.

Advocates body seeks CJI intervention after ED issues summons to senior lawyers
The Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) on Friday raised concerns over the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoning yet another senior legal professional — this time, senior advocate Pratap Venugopal, and urged Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan R Gavai to take immediate suo motu cognisance of what the body described as a serious infringement on the independence of the legal profession and lawyer-client confidentiality. Venugopal was the Advocate-on-Record (AoR) for a legal opinion rendered by senior counsel Arvind Datar that supported the allotment of the Employee Stock Option Plan (ESOP) by Care Health Insurance to former Religare Enterprises Chairperson Rashmi Saluja. While ED had earlier this month summoned Datar as well, that notice was subsequently withdrawn after protests from the legal fraternity. In a letter dated June 20, SCAORA President Vipin Nair termed the ED's action 'a deeply disquieting development,' cautioning that such coercive measures strike at the heart of legal privilege and the fundamental tenets of the rule of law. Venugopal, who was designated as a senior advocate earlier this year, received an ED summons on June 19 under Section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. The summons relates to the ongoing investigation into the ESOP matter. In its letter, SCAORA asserted that such actions amount to an 'impermissible transgression' of the sacrosanct principle of lawyer-client privilege. It warned that if left unchecked, this trend could have a chilling effect on the entire legal community, discouraging lawyers from rendering candid legal advice and undermining the independence of the Bar. 'The role of an advocate in offering legal advice is both privileged and protected. Interference by investigative agencies, particularly in respect of opinions rendered in a professional capacity—strikes at the core of the rule of law,' the letter stated. SCAORA urged the Supreme Court to intervene and examine the legality and propriety of issuing summonses to advocates for professional opinions, besides framing guidelines to prevent future incursions into lawyer-client confidentiality. This is the second time in recent days that the Association has raised its voice against such summonses. On June 16, SCAORA issued a public statement condemning the ED's notice to Datar, terming it 'unwarranted' and indicative of a growing trend of investigative overreach. On June 17, the Delhi High Court Bar Association also passed a resolution strongly criticising the ED's move, calling it a direct threat to the constitutional right to legal representation and fair trial. The Gujarat High Court Advocates Association too convened an emergency meeting the same day, with its president Brijesh Trivedi denouncing the ED's actions as violative of legal independence. The body demanded immediate government action to protect attorney-client privilege through statutory amendments to the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023.

Tasmac case: Madras HC halts ED probe against film producer, businessman says no direct evidence against Akash Baskaran, Vikram Ravindran; declares ED raids illegal, orders return of seized items
CHENNAI: In a major setback for the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the Madras high court on Friday restrained the agency from continuing its investigation into the roles of film producer Akash Baskaran and businessman Vikram Ravindran in the Tasmac money laundering case. A division bench comprising Justices M S Ramesh and V Lakshminarayanan observed that there was no direct evidence in the documents submitted by the ED to prove the duo's involvement in the alleged money laundering. The court also declared the searches conducted on their premises illegal and directed the ED to return all items seized during the raids. Akash Baskaran of Dawn Pictures and businessman Vikram Ravindran had moved the High Court seeking relief after the ED searched their homes and offices as part of its probe into alleged money laundering through Tasmac (Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation), and sealed their premises. The ED had earlier conducted searches at Tasmac outlets, distilleries, and breweries in March, claiming to have unearthed illegal cash generation worth Rs 1,000 crore. In May, fresh searches were carried out covering Baskaran and Ravindran while the ED was interrogating Tasmac Managing Director S Visakan at its office.
