J&K Police's ‘Bharosa' initiative for women safety & empowerment yielding positive results: Officials
DIG of Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban (DKR) range, Shridhar Patil, has launched the initiative structured around the three pillars of prevention, response, and empowerment.
'The initiative has already shown measurable impact on the ground,' said a senior police officer.
The DIG informed that a three-day capacity-building programme, held in collaboration with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, trained 95 women police personnel in gender sensitisation, effective complaint handling, and community engagement strategies. 'As part of its extensive outreach efforts, 94 awareness programmes have been conducted, benefiting over 4,400 individuals. Response mechanisms have been strengthened through the 24x7 women helpline (112), J&K Police eCOP app, and rapid response teams. On the empowerment front, more than 4,700 people have gained that from cyber awareness and legal aid initiatives,' the officer further said.
The officials also informed that the initiative was launched last year in June in the Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban range.
Police officials are also reaching remote areas to educate people. The initiative has led to a notable increase in crime reporting, improved public trust in police services, and the adoption of advanced technology, including AI-powered surveillance and GPS-enabled patrols. It has also ushered in critical reforms such as digitised FIR systems, e-FIR facility, SOPs for crimes against women, and the enforcement of the POSH Act.

Asim Arun's personal secy suspended after harassment complaint
Lucknow: Jaikishan Singh, the personal secretary (PS) to Uttar Pradesh social welfare minister Asim Arun, was suspended on Friday—a day after he was booked for sexual harassment of a woman employee at the department's headquarters. According to the FIR, the survivor, a contractual staffer at Bhagedari Bhawan in Lucknow, accused Singh of repeated sexual misconduct, including two recent instances of inappropriate physical contact. Breaking down before the minister, she recounted incidents that took place on July 28 and four to five days prior, alleging prolonged harassment. Minister Arun, upon hearing the complaint, immediately summoned the police to his office. Singh was taken into custody on the spot and later suspended. Arun also recommended a full administrative inquiry through the state secretariat. "Law doesn't stop at the road—it applies inside offices too," the minister said, praising the woman's courage in speaking up. "No one is above the law—not even my own PS." A former IPS officer, Arun added that the govt will now strictly enforce the POSH Act and Vishaka Guidelines across departments. He also announced a new "Outsourcing Corporation" under CM Yogi Adityanath to address broader structural issues affecting outsourced workers. However, Arun cautioned against linking sexual harassment to outsourcing alone. "This is a gendered crime. The nature of employment does not determine the seriousness of the offence," he said, promising increased awareness campaigns and stronger internal complaint mechanisms.

Raipur: A school principal was arrested in Chhattisgarh's Durg district for allegedly beating up a nursery student and sticking tape on her mouth as punishment for using 'Radhe Radhe' as a greeting on Thursday, police said. The child's father, a daily wage labourer, filed a complaint after his daughter returned home with bruises. Elderly man falls off scooter, gets run over by car in Pune; dies
A 61-year-old man lost his life in Pune's Aundh area after falling off his scooter allegedly due to a pothole and being subsequently run over by a car, police said on Friday. According to police officials, the elderly man fell off his scooter allegedly due to a pothole.(HT File Photo/Representative) The deceased, identified as Jagannath Kashinath Kale, was on his way home on the afternoon of July 30 when the accident occurred. According to police officials, "A 61-year-old man in Pune identified as Jagannath Kashinath Kale lost his life after falling off from his scooter allegedly due to a pothole and being run over by a passing car. The incident also captured on CCTV." The CCTV footage, which surfaced later in the week, has prompted police to initiate the process of filing a First Information Report (FIR). Authorities confirmed that investigations into the matter are ongoing and appropriate legal action will follow. According to Police, "Kale was on his way home when the accident occurred in Aundh area of Pune City. A gap between the road and nearby paving blocks had created a mid-sized pothole. His scooter slipped into the gap, causing him to lose control and fall. Moments later, a car approaching from behind ran over him." Further investigation is underway.
