Pick up a penguin! Care home residents visited by the usually arctic animals, who even wandered through the dining room
Humboldt penguins Widget and Pringle waddled into Gregory House, Grantham, Lincolnshire on Wednesday.
It was part of the home's efforts to give memorable experiences to the people staying there in their old age.
Some of the residents even got hugs from Widget and Pringle who came from Amazing Animals in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, to see them.
They were happy to be stroked and dotted on as they plodded through the dining room.
Pamela Parker said 'When I heard of penguins coming to the home, I did wonder why there wasn't a paddling pool filled up for them.'
Home Manager Marie Young said: 'It was an absolute joy to see the residents' faces light up when the penguins arrived.
'We like to think outside the box and bring something different for our residents. On this occasion, I think we certainly did.'
The penguin's visit to the care home is also part of the zoo's programme of animal enrichment activity, providing mental and physical stimulus for the penguins.
It's not Widget and Pringle's first care home jaunt as the pair visited residents at Brendoncare St Giles View in Winchester, last year.
Pensioners took turns giving them a hug or even a pamper in the sink under the tap.
And the duo have even been to a wedding together, with Pringle acting as a ring-bearer.
Jen and Tom Loveland were joined by the penguins for their big day in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, in February 2024.
Unsuspecting family and friends were told that Jen's brother, Adam, and Tom's sister, Carys, would be the ring-bearers.
During the ceremony, the pair pretended they forgot the wedding bands and quickly exited the room - leaving guests feeling rather uncomfortable.
However, they quickly returned with the 25-inch penguin who accompanied them down the aisle with the rings.
The visitors were obviously on their very best behaviour. Photos show the delight on the faces of the care home residents
Humboldt penguins are known for their strong swimming abilities and can reach speeds of up to 15mph.
Despite once being a plentiful species, Humboldt penguin's are now an endangered creature due to the threat of fishing and climate change.
The animals, which typically nest on islands and rocky coasts along Chile and Peru in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, usually have a black breast band, head and bill and white circles around their eyes.
Usually growing to about 26 to 28 inches long and weighing between 4-5kg, the creatures feed primarily on fish, especially anchovies, herring and smelt.

Notting Hill Carnival 2025 guide: Parade route, where to watch and how to get around London
West London prepares to welcome some 50,000 parade performers this weekend as over two million people descend on the technicolour roads of Notting Hill for London's largest street party. Notting Hill Carnival is just days away, returning bigger and better than ever for 2025's exuberant festivities. The community-led celebration of history and Caribbean culture started in 1966, and the iconic parade champions a procession of dancing to soca and calypso music. Three days of live stages with a lineup of steel and mas bands, elaborate floats and dozens of sound systems greet carnival attendees sparkling in prints, patterns and neon brights. Sunday's family day draws crowds of excited children while Monday's adult parade puts on the ultimate show – both events are free to attend. Food stalls pepper the route with offerings of fiercely flavoured Jamaican jerk chicken and Trinidadian roti, and pre- and post-carnival parties keep the good vibes going well into the night. Here's our guide to the Notting Hill festivities, including where to go, how to get there and where to stay if you're visiting. When is it? Notting Hill Carnival 2025 spans the August bank holiday weekend from Saturday 23 to Monday 25 August, and most of the celebrations are free for anyone to attend. Saturday 23 August Saturday is the Panorama Steel band competition, a national contest to crown the best from a ten-minute pan composition. From 4-11pm at Emslie Horniman's Pleasance Park, W10 3DH, tickets £20pp. Sunday 24 August J'Ouvert – the traditional celebration to ring in the carnival with colourful paints and powders before sunrise – is back for 2025, starting at Sainsbury's by Canal Way Roundabout from 6am to 9am. The carnival opening ceremony officially kicks off at 10am on Sunday at MAS Judging Point on Great Western Road. New this year, the Judging Zone Grandstand is open to the public with tickets available from £30. Sunday is 'family day' with a children's parade dancing the streets, Dutty Mas – a mayhem of brightly coloured paints or even melted 'chocolate' – and live sound systems of reggae and house music. At 3pm on both Sunday and Monday, a 72-second silence will be held to remember the 72 lives tragically lost in the Grenfell Tower fire. Sound systems from 12-7pm at Emslie Horniman's Pleasance Park and Powis Square, W11 2AY. Monday 25 August Adults Day is on bank holiday Monday from 10.30am, when the traditional parade and intense carnival party kicks off. Ticketed after-parties continue the festivities late into the night. Sound systems from 12-7pm at Emslie Horniman's Pleasance Park and Powis Square, W11 2AY. Where does the route go? Follow the crowds through Notting Hill and Kensington's W10 and W11. The three-and-a-half-mile route across west London starts near Westbourne Park tube station, down Chepstow Road to Westbourne Grove and then up to Ladbroke Grove, looping down Kensal Road back to Westbourne Park. You can track the parade's progress on the official map. Where are the nearest Tube stations? The closest stations within walking distance of the popular route are: Paddington (Elizabeth line from Stratford) Shepherd's Bush (20-minute walk from the carnival) Notting Hill Gate (exit only from 11am to 6pm) Royal Oak (exit only from 11am to 6pm when station closes) Westbourne Park (exit only from 11am) Holland Park (exit only 11am to 3pm when station closes) Kensal Green (expect queues) Kensal Rise (queuing system from 6pm) TfL has advised that several roads will be closed in Notting Hill, so buses and taxis will not be able to take you to the heart of the action, and there is no Night Tube or Overground on Sunday or Monday evening. Ladbroke Grove Tube station will be closed on both days. Where to stay? Here are the best hotels to stay in for a prime position near the carnival: The Pilgrim, Paddington Located by Paddington station within walking distance of Notting Hill, this hotel is as stylish as it is welcoming, with wood-panelled rooms and a relaxed vibe ideal for winding down after dancing the day away in the carnival's parade. The Kensington This chic hotel in South Kensington is a stone's throw from Hyde Park and an upmarket option for carnival dwellers looking to stay away from the vibrant centre of the lively weekend.

Watch agonising moment X-factor star Lucy Spraggan tore her vulva on Celebrity SAS after eye-watering harness malfunction
Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins star Lucy Spraggan revealed last week that she 'ripped her labia' while filming the gruelling Channel 4 military training series. Now the horrifying moment has aired on the show, showing Lucy, 34, doubled over in pain and clutching her crotch as she reveals to her co-stars that she had cut her labia on the harness during her bungee stunt. The nasty ordeal left the former X Factor star bleeding, in agony, and now facing reconstructive surgery. Speaking to The Sun earlier this month, the singer recalled her 'dignity had gone' when the doctor came over to inspect her following the incident. She told the publication: 'I ripped my labia - it was bad. That's not a common injury. Actually, genuinely, that's never been the same, so much so, I'm having some surgery soon to correct it. 'I don't really know even what happened, I guess the harness was tight. I was like: "This feels really bad. Surely there can't be anything." And I looked, and there was a tear, there was lots of blood, and the doctor came over, and I turned around, And now, the horrifying moment has aired on the show, showing Lucy, 34, doubled over in pain and clutching her crotch as she revealed to her co-stars that she had cut her labia on the harness during her bungee stunt 'Because at that point, you literally don't care about anything. Dignity has gone. It was like: "Oh my God, I thought it was your leg." And I was like: "No, no, it's not!" In an interview with LadBible, Lucy explained that she was bungee jumping off a viaduct, and the incident happened after she was in free fall for five seconds before suddenly coming to a halt. She told the publication: 'You hit that sort of lowest point, obviously there's quite a lot of like "yank" and I knew that my harness was, in a bit of an odd position, 'But you've got so much adrenaline when stuff like that's happening, you can't really be like, "Oh, can I just move this?".' Knowing that something was wrong straight away, she added: 'I knew straight away that, like, that was a sincere amount of pain and it was f*****g sincere pain.' However, Lucy's SAS woes didn't end with the harness. During filming, she also nearly knocked a tooth out, fainted, and face-planted into the sea after jumping from a helicopter onto a boat, which left her with a black eye and permanently displaced facial filler. The injury was so bad that it was still visible on her wedding day in June 2024. The clip then showed Lucy in free fall for five seconds before suddenly coming to a halt at the bottom, with the tight harness leaving her with significant injuries Lucy also revealed that the force of hitting the water was so strong that it caused her facial filler to shift to one side. By that time, she was experiencing pain all over, and once she returned home, she needed to have the filler dissolved. The interview comes after the Daily Mail reported earlier this month that Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins stars will reportedly receive their full appearance fee even if they drop out early. The likes of Hannah Spearitt, Tasha Ghouri, Louie Spence, Chloe Burrows, Adebayo Akinfenwa, Harry Clark, Lady Leshurr, and Rebecca Loos have now pulled out of the gruelling Channel 4 show. But according to The Sun, even stars who decide to pack it in themselves still get the full fee they were promised upon signing up. Hannah, who only lasted a minute before bowing out, will still reportedly earn an impressive £10K for her brief appearance. A source said: 'Hannah Spearitt, Chloe Burrows and Tasha Ghouri will all have been paid over £10k - some as much as £20k - but unlike other reality shows, they do get paid if they pull out. 'So even though Hannah only lasted one minute, she'll still get paid over £10k for that minute. 'It's well worth stars signing up even if they don't think they can complete the show just for the payday - it might be embarrassing taking their armband off early in the show, but it's good money!'
