‘They ruined me': Natalie Ennis, tortured in Dublin flat, still awaits psychiatric support

Irish Times6 days ago
A woman who is still waiting for psychiatric support after being
falsely imprisoned and tortured
for three hours in a
Dublin
flat last September has said her life has been 'ruined.'
Natalie Ennis was taken to a flat in Henrietta House in Dublin 7 over a false accusation about missing drugs.
The 38-year-old spent three weeks in hospital having suffered a broken eye socket, broken cheekbone, broken nasal bone, broken elbow, burns, dislocated teeth, bruising and lacerations across her head and scalp, among other injuries.
She was discovered by gardaí who arrived at the flat by coincidence to execute a warrant.

'I thought they were coming for me, because the neighbours would have heard me screaming,' she said, speaking on RTÉ's Prime Time on Thursday night.
'I never thanked police so much in my life, because if they hadn't come through the door that day, I was dead.'
Throughout the three-hour ordeal, Ms Ennis was subjected to 'truly barbaric' violence, said Judge Pauline Codd, who
imposed sentences for the five men
ranging from 8½ to 14 years on Wednesday.
'They really ruined and stripped my life away from me. It took everything from me,' Ms Ennis said.
She is still waiting for psychiatric support some 10 months after the ordeal, saying she needs 'a lot of help'.
'They ruined me, I just kind of need help, that's why I'm waiting on psychiatrists and stuff like that,' she said.
Ms Ennis, who thought she was going to die in the flat, does not believe she will ever be able to live normally.
'I can't get on any public transport, I can't go near the city centre. I'm just going to my local shops and back every day and that's still a fright. I'm still looking over my shoulder,' she said.
'When I sleep, I get night terrors, very bad night terrors and sometimes I urinate myself,' she said.
Ms Ennis was beaten with metal poles, burned with a makeshift blowtorch, cut with a knife, kicked and punched, had her hair cut off and was threatened with rape.
The men took running jumps at her during the assault , threatened to make her drink ammonia and threatened to go to her teenage daughter's school and rape her.
Describing the pain as 'unbearable', she said: 'It was just pure evil what they done to me.'
'I had staples in my head leaving hospital as well. I can't remember how many, but it was a good lot from the hatchet being stuck in my head,' she said. 'I can't feel that side of my face.'
She hopes to move on for her daughter 'but I don't think that's going to happen, it'll always be in my head,' she said.

Good samaritan's forgetful moment prompts gardaí to share urgent safety warning

Gardaí have warned of risks surrounding doing lawn works near a busy road, after passing a good samaritan strimming near a road in Kilkenny. With overgrowth in the summer, some people like to take matters into their own hands and cut the bushes back to try and ensure that people can see past them, or for cyclists who may have to cycle out a bit more into the road to avoid them. However, Gardaí in Kilkenny had to warn a citizen who was strimming near the road that he should be careful; as while he wasn't committing an offence, they were just ensuring that he would be safe in an era of high speeds and dangerous driving. Gardaí have warned of risks surrounding doing lawn works near a busy road, after passing a good samaritan strimming near a road in An Garda Síochána Kilkenny/Facebook 'It's just too dangerous…' Gardaí wrote on their Kilkenny Facebook page. 'One of our lads was travelling to Paulstown a few minutes ago when he noticed a good citizen strimming on the verge. It adjoins the Cycle lane on the side of the road. 'The member stopped for a chat and to warn the man of the dangers and it transpired he had forgotten his Hi Vis. Unfortunately with great speeds and distracted driving, even a Hi Vis might not be enough but it's a good start. 'It is important to point out that this decent individual was not committing any offence but when you've attended fatal collisions, you're just that bit more alarmed.' Gardaí were commended for raising awareness of the safety issue, with one commenting ''Be safe, be seen' isn't just a motto. It's the truth. Too many times I've almost missed someone because of poor choice of clothing for what they were doing, where they're going etc. 'I'm glad I have good eye sight, but not everyone does. Not everyone pays attention constantly. As a cyclist, pedestrian, driver I always aim to be seen. It's a fundamental safety concern I have.' 'Even a white t-shirt if he didn't have anything brighter,' another commented, while another added 'I all ways wear my hi viz when i'm walking, it's common sense.' Irish woman found dead on New York yacht was successful entrepreneur

The Co Carlow woman found dead on a yacht in New York state was a designer and entrepreneur who left Ireland nine years ago and became very successful in the fashion business. Martha Nolan-O' Slatarra (33), a loungewear and swimwear designer, was from Monacurragh, Blackbog Road, close to Carlow town. She was found unconscious on a boat at the exclusive Montauk Yacht Club in the early hours of Tuesday. The results of a preliminary examination into the cause of her death were deemed 'inconclusive', police said. A postmortem examination 'did not show evidence of violence and her final cause of death is pending further examination', a statement from Suffolk County Police said late on Wednesday. READ MORE Ms Nolan-O'Slatarra attended primary school in Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal and became a popular performer with the school band under the guidance of Sr Anna Hyland. When younger she was a keen footballer and played with Éire Óg GAA club up to the age of 16. A local woman who knew her as a young girl said: 'Martha was always smiling and a very personable person. She was a determined young girl even back then and so many people admired her.' Following her education in St Leo's College Secondary School in Carlow town, Ms Nolan-O'Slatarra studied commerce in UCD and gained a MA in digital marketing from the university's Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School. It is understood that both she and her sister Jacqui moved with their mother Eleanor 'Elma' Nolan from Carlow to the Dublin/Wicklow border. Her mother's family are a well-known and highly respected farming family. Ms Nolan-O'Slatarra worked in Ireland until 2015 before emigrating to the United States. She set up East x East, a luxury brand for sunglasses, swimwear and resort wear for men and women. She was also director of operations at investment firm K4 Capital and ran Duper, a fashion brand. Ms Nolan-O'Slatarra kept in contact with her many Carlow-based friends. A family who moved from Bagenalstown to the US helped her set up her business in Montauk. She lived in Manhattan's upper east side and had recently celebrated her brand's pop-up shop on the beach in Long Island's Hamptons. It is understood that her mother and her aunt Jacqui are making their way to New York. Ms Nolan-O'Slatarra was due to visit her family in Ireland this week. Dylan Grace, originally from Ireland and who was a business partner of Ms Nolan-O'Slatarra, based in Brooklyn, New York, paid tribute to her on Instagram. In a post with a photograph of them both he said: 'We dreamed big together, laughed harder than anyone else could understand, and built so much from nothing. I'm truly blessed and grateful to have had you in my life. Love you so much Mar. Fly high girl.' Former mayor of Carlow and Fine Gael councillor Fergal Browne said his thoughts and prayers are with Ms Nolan-O'Slatarra's family and extended relatives. 'My sympathies are with the entire family. The death of a young woman with her life cut short and who did have years ahead of her makes this so heartbreaking. 'Martha is from a long established and highly respected farming family. It is so devastating for them all.' A man found Ms Nolan-O'Slatarra, unconscious on the boat at Montauk Yacht Club at 12am local time on Tuesday and shouted for help. It is believed that two men on a nearby boat performed CPR on the Carlow woman. She was later pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services. A police investigation into her death is being carried out by Suffolk County police detectives. A police statement said: 'East Hampton Town Police responded to a 911 call from a man reporting a woman unconscious on a boat docked at the Montauk Yacht Club, on Star Island Road, at approximately 12am. Good Samaritans attempted to perform CPR on the woman.' The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance. 'As in all cases the department does not comment on individual cases,' a spokesperson said.
