Bend It Like Beckham sequel in the works, director says
The 2002 comedy-drama starred Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley, who chase careers in professional football despite their parents' wishes.
Directed by Gurinder Chadha, it is credited with inspiring a generation of women to take up football.
Chadha teased the sequel in Basel, Switzerland, on Saturday (July 26), where England are set to take on Spain in the final of the Women's Euros on Sunday (July 27).

She has earmarked 2027 for the next instalment, to mark both the film's 25th anniversary and the FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil, BBC News reports.
Chadha said she was still unsure what form the sequel might take, but suggested it could either be another film or a television series.
"I'm pretty certain that everyone's going to want to come back"
Discussing with Deadline about the sequel, Chadha shared: "I'm excited to revisit the original characters and revive the enduring story and build on the legacy we helped to create for the women's game."
The original cast members 'are aware that a sequel is being developed, but they obviously want to see a script before they commit".
'I'm pretty certain that everyone's going to want to come back,' she adds hopefully.
She added: 'Everything hinges on the script and if the original cast likes it.
'I am working really hard to make sure every character I bring back has a decent arc and scenes.'
Alongside that, there is the hope that members of the current England squad would be "queuing up" to take on cameo roles.
Although the environment around women's football has changed significantly since the film's release, Chadha says there is still some work to be done.
She explained: "A lot has changed since the original movie, but I think that people still don't think that women should play football.
"There are people who still don't take it seriously, although the Lionesses are riding high.

Lohan carried a miniature guitar-shaped bag by Judith Leiber, a playful wink to her character Anna's band girl past. Where the original character wore hers on a strap, Lohan clutched this one like a clutch, turning teenage angst into red carpet moment. She finished the look with simple Manolo Blahnik heels which gave the look a more grown up feel. The Mean Girls star has been on a full nostalgia streak lately. Earlier this week, she paid tribute to another one of her iconic roles - this time from her film debut, The Parent Trap . Fans bewildered by actor 'set to replace' Jesse Eisenberg in Social Network 2
Fans have been left baffled at the prospect of an actor replacing star Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg in the sequel to The Social Network. They've called the move 'odd' and questioned its impact on the film's success. There's been a flurry of reports regarding a sequel to the 2010 Oscar-winning movie about the birth of social media platform Facebook and its founder. In June, it was said that original writer Aaron Sorkin had found the right angle for the second movie after teasing the possibility for years and was confirmed to direct it as well, replacing original director David Fincher. According to Deadline, insiders revealed its title was currently The Social Network Part II although it was 'not a straight sequel' to the first movie, which also featured actors Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Max Minghella and Armie Hammer. Since then, the publication has reported that Sorkin is also keen to cast this year's best actress Academy Award winner Mikey Madison, from Anora, and The Bear's Jeremy Allen White, who will soon be seen in the lead role in Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere. But the latest report reveals that Succession star Jeremy Strong is being eyed by Sorkin to play Zuckerberg, whose company has rebranded as Meta, having had a meeting with the filmmaker. As per The Hollywood Reporter, a source claimed that A Real Pain star and scribe Eisenberg – who was nominated for an Oscar for his work in the first film – had 'passed, at least at this time' on the opportunity to reprise the role. 'As much as I love Jeremy Strong he needs to pass on this. This will not help his career. Without Eisenberg, they should cancel this or find a way into the story without Zuckerberg as a character,' announced @WhereIsBatman89 on X, while another fan insisted: 'Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg or this movie is dead on arrival.' 'We do not want him. Bring Jesse back,' commented Poppy, while @DxTCinema asked: 'Why why why we want Jesse.' Meanwhile fan Chandler called the casting rumour 'odd' and others shared their confusion over a lack of immediate similarity in Strong's and Zuckerberg's looks. 'Ah yes that's perfect they look like twins,' quipped Michael K, while Joelyn added: 'The resemblance is uncanny.' But others were thrilled at the prospect of Strong, who also impressed with his turn as Donald Trump's ruthless mentor Roy Cohn in The Apprentice – for which he was Oscar nominated for best supporting actor. Beloved British film confirmed as coming to Netflix just days after sequel news
Netflix knows how to treat its fans right after confirming one of the most popular British films ever made will be added soon – just days after its sequel was announced. In 2002, director Gurinder Chadha blessed the world with Bend It Like Beckham, which inspired a whole generation of girls to get involved with football. It tells the story of British Indian girl Jess Bhamra (Parminder Nagra), who is trying to pursue her football dream, inspired by David Beckham, in the face of parental disapproval. Along the way she finds best friend Jules (Keira Knightley in her breakout role) and a possible love interest in her coach Joe (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). Following Chadha confirming that a sequel is now officially in the works, Netflix UK took to Instagram to confirm that the original film would be attended to the platform for British fans on August 15. 'One of the greatest feel-good movies ever made,' enthused critic Emily Blunt at the time, while the Philadelphia Inquirer went one step further, claiming: 'No mere feel-good movie, it's a feel-great movie.' Others were charmed by the energy and vibrant charm of Bend It Like Beckham too, with Empire's Alan Morrison writing: 'Delightfully upbeat, it will send you back out onto the street grinning from ear to ear.' 'You seldom leave a theatre walking on air, much less float all through a movie. But the joyous Bend It Like Beckham never lets you down,' agreed the Washington Post's review, while the BBC's Jamie Russell observed: 'It's the kind of film that'll have the whole audience clapping by the time the credit sequence outtakes appear.'
