Tadej Pogacar dances up Mur de Huy to claim victory in Flèche Wallonne

The Guardian23-04-2025
Tadej Pogacar bounced back in style after his Paris-Roubaix and Amstel Gold Race heartbreaks as he claimed a second Flèche Wallonne title with an early attack in the finale on Wednesday.
The world champion attacked when 400 metres from the finish on the brutally steep Mur de Huy and never looked back, prevailing over France's Kévin Vauquelin and third-placed Tom Pidcock of Britain.
The Slovenian, who was pipped by Mattias Skjelmose at the Amstel Gold Race last Sunday and by Mathieu van der Poel at Paris-Roubaix after overcooking a turn, mastered the tough conditions as rain and cold weather affected the race throughout.
Sensing that his main rival, Remco Evenepoel, was struggling, Tour de France champion Pogacar launched his attack early on a hill averaging a gradient of 9.8% and quickly opened a seemingly unassailable lead.
Vauquelin distanced the skimmed bunch to take second place for the second year in a row while Pidcock grabbed the last place on the podium.

Ambitious PSG want to continue making history, says Luis Enrique

Aug 16 (Reuters) - Paris St Germain coach Luis Enrique has been impressed by the improvement his players have shown after one week of training following a busy summer when they finished as Club World Cup runners-up and believes they can retain the Champions League. PSG had only a few training sessions before beating Tottenham Hotspur on penalties to win the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, with Luis Enrique praising his team's fighting spirit as they begin the quest for a fifth Ligue 1 title in a row. "I like the way the team fought in the European Super Cup, with little training. That has been the DNA of this team in recent seasons, fighting all the time," he told reporters on the eve of the visit to Nantes for his side's league opener. "What we want now is to get our feel for the ball back ... at the moment it's normal not to be at 100%." Luis Enrique, who has won back-to-back league titles at PSG, previously led Barcelona to two LaLiga trophies in a row but fell short of a hat-trick. The 55-year-old said he expected a difficult start to the Ligue 1 campaign, but remained hopeful of a win at Nantes, who finished 13th last season. "I can see improvements after just one week. We know how difficult it is for players to play away from home, against any team. In Nantes, we're going to have problems. It will be tight," he said. Asked about PSG's ultimate goal this season, the Spaniard said he wanted to win the Champions League again following their 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan in this year's final. "The prevailing feeling is that of continuing to make history, which has been the primary objective since day one. It's a special moment because it's difficult to see a team win the Champions League twice in a row," he said. "That's our goal. We're very ambitious. We know how difficult this goal is, but it's normal to have this mentality. It depends on us, on our level. And I think it's a very fun goal."

Newcastle renew interest in PSG star as club continue striker search amid Alexander Isak's attempt to force move to Liverpool

Paris-Saint Germain's Goncalo Ramos is back on the agenda for Newcastle, as they continue their search for strikers amid Alexander Isak's attempt to force a move to Liverpool. The 24-year-old was on the club's shortlist earlier this month, only for sources to suggest a move was unlikely after initial enquiries. However, Daily Mail Sport has learnt that Ramos is now a live option for the Magpies. The Portugal forward has admirers within St James' Park and intermediaries have indicated that a deal is possible. PSG would be more minded to sell, rather than contemplate a loan, and we understand Ramos is on an ever-decreasing list of strikers Newcastle are exploring. After scoring in PSG's Uefa Super Cup win over Tottenham this week, Ramos appeared to commit his future to the Champions League winners during a post-match interview. But the former Benfica star has never been a regular starter under Luis Enrique, and a move to Tyneside could appeal. Newcastle are still working to the plan of bringing in two strikers before the end of the transfer window, and that would facilitate Isak's move to Liverpool. Yoane Wissa is expected to join from Brentford next week. However, Eddie Howe will not compromise on quality or character in that search, and there remains an increasing possibility that Isak stays at Newcastle, especially as the deadline of September 1 grows ever nearer.

Keely Hodgkinson admits injury absence since Olympics has been upsetting

Olympic 800 metres champion Keely Hodgkinson admits she has found it 'upsetting' to be out of action for over a year. The 23-year-old has not raced since claiming gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics after sustaining a hamstring injury in February, then suffering setbacks – twice-postponing her season debut. Hodgkinson will return to the track on Saturday in the 800 metres at the Silesia Diamond League meet, though Hodgkinson's signature event is not a 'diamond' discipline in Poland. 'It's been a frustrating year for real,' said Hodgkinson, who still hopes to be in fighting shape for the world championships in Tokyo, now less than one month away. 'Coming back into June, not being able to do anything and it had been so long, coming off the back of winning the Olympics last year, not ideal at all that I couldn't even get on the start line. 'It's definitely been a bit upsetting at times. Missing London was hardest for me, because it was so good last year. I just wanted to be there in front of my home crowd, especially coming back after the Olympics. 'It's been frustrating but it makes the good times sweeter and it makes it even better to be here now. 'I think tomorrow is just a stepping stone on the way there. I'm looking forward to getting out there, just being competitive again. I've come out ready to go, so I'm just excited to put something together.' Hodgkinson was forced to pull out of the inaugural edition of her eponymous Keely Klassic event in February, then the Stockholm and London Diamond Leagues. It was at the latter last season that Hodgkinson set a new national record of one minute 54.61 seconds in the 800 metres, weeks before becoming just the third British female Olympic champion at the distance after Ann Packer and Dame Kelly Holmes. Hodgkinson's trip to Poland has already got off to a speedy start. She revealed: 'The guys yesterday, the organisers, picked us up in a Porsche, we get about 10 minutes in and they were like, 'do you want to drive it?' 'I was like, 'of course I want to drive it!'. He was actually being serious, so I got in the car and drove it all the way back. It was fun.' Hodgkinson hopes to secure her first world title in Japan after back to back silvers at the last two championships, and is making the best of what remains in her control. The Lausanne Diamond League on August 20th – where the 800 metres is a diamond discipline, is next up. Hodgkinson added: 'It's been a long time. Over a year since Paris. It wasn't my plan to be this late, but I'm just super happy to get back on the start line. 'I've missed it. I've missed it a lot. This is what I trained to do, so I can't wait to go out there and just give it my absolute best and we'll see what happens.'
