Here's every game cancelled by Xbox after devastating job cuts
While Microsoft is no stranger to mass layoffs, its latest round of job cuts have been particularly detrimental to its gaming division.
Earlier this week, the company laid off over 9,000 people across Microsoft's global workforce, which is estimated to be around 228,000 people. Something less than half of these cuts were at Xbox, which suggests around 4,000 people within the gaming division may have been affected.
A number of studios have reportedly been affected by the cuts, including Call Of Duty developers Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, and High Moon; along with others like Halo Studios, Rare, Blizzard, Turn 10, and The Initiative – the latte of which has been shut down entirely.
As part of the layoffs, several projects have been axed across the affected studios. While many other unannounced games have also likely been shelved, which we'll probably never hear about, here's all the confirmed and reported cancellations we know about so far.

As confirmed in a memo to staff from Xbox Game Studios boss Matt Booty, the reboot of Perfect Dark from developer The Initiative has been axed. The first-person shooter was last shown off at the Xbox Games Showcase in 2024, but has been marred by development issues for years. The Initiative in its entirety has also been closed down.
In the same memo to staff, Booty announced Rare's Everwild has also been cancelled. The action adventure title was originally announced in 2019 but little has been seen of it since, and it was reportedly rebooted in 2021.
According to VGC, Everwild's director Gregg Mayles has departed Rare after 35 years, in the wake of the game's cancellation, along with producer Louise O'Connor. Mayles is one of the team's most celebrated developers, having directed Sea Of Thieves, Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Piñata, and others.
While a new Banjo-Kazooie has never been confirmed, reliable insider NateTheHate claimed a project related to the IP did exist in January last year. However, in a post on ResetEra, after the layoffs, he wrote: 'I'd assume it was shelved at this stage.'
It's unclear when exactly the game was cancelled, but with the departure of Banjo-Kazooie co-creator Gregg Mayles at Rare, the chances of a new game in the series have never been more slim.
Microsoft's cuts have impacted studios beyond the house of Xbox. Romero Games, the studio founded by John and Brenda Romero, revealed that the publisher of its previously announced untitled first person shooter was in fact Microsoft, and that they had cancelled funding of the project amid the layoffs. According to reports, the studio has been shut down entirely as a result.
ZeniMax Online Studios, the creators of The Elder Scrolls Online, were apparently working on a sci-fi 'third person, online looter shooter' codenamed Blackbird. According to reports, the game made a huge impression on Xbox executives in March this year. But that didn't stop them cancelling it and laying off all the developers.
At the same time as the layoffs, Blizzard announced it will no longer support free-to-play mobile strategy game Warcraft Rumble with new content. While the layoffs aren't directly cited as the reason why, it's very likely connected, with the developers noting that it 'struggled to find its footing relative to our ambition for its long-term success'.
Turn 10, the studio behind Microsoft's long-running racing series Forza Motorsport, has also been severely impacted by the layoffs. According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, nearly 50% of staff have been laid off as part of the cuts. More Trending
As noted on Reddit, former employees have since claimed the studio will remain open but as a support studio for Forza Horizon, which would mean an end to any future Forza Motorsport projects. Activision has a history of doing this with its internal studios and, as in many things lately, Microsoft seems to be taking inspiration from them in this instance.
According to Windows Central, Hideo Kojima and Jordan Peele's upcoming Xbox exclusive OD is still in development, despite the cuts. 'At least for now,' the report notes.
Every game in June's Xbox Games Showcase is also in the clear, according to Variety. This would include Clockwork Revolution, DoubleFine's Keeper, Grounded 2, The Outer Worlds 2, and Gears Of War: Reloaded.
The status of other games are still unclear, namely Contraband which recently had its trailer pulled from YouTube (although reports suggest this might be due to a music licensing issue) and the long-delayed State Of Decay 3.

The retired civil servant and royal fan who swears blind she spotted the Waleses on a £40million superyacht off the coast of an enchanting Greek island
Normally at this time of year the people of the Ionian Islands talk of being overworked and little else. With nearly three million tourists visiting the region during July and August, they certainly have their work cut out. Not that they'd have it any other way, of course. For more than a week, though, another topic, or rather a question, has dominated conversation in bars and tavernas, particularly on beautiful Kefalonia. Has anyone seen Prince William and his family? Locals swear blind that the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children George, 12, Charlotte, ten, and seven-year-old Louis arrived on the island by private Lear jet on July 16. Also in tow, others insisted, were the future King's in-laws, Carole and Michael Middleton. All were then driven to a waiting superyacht. And from there out to azure waters and, well, who knows where? Speculation has been rife. 'Oh yes, sure, I got a picture of their boat,' a taxi driver assures me. He flourishes his smartphone and a photo of the superyacht, Norn, cruising north of the capital Argostoli. He adds: 'It's owned by a Microsoft tycoon, a billionaire tech guy. I know for sure this is the one they're on.' Maybe. But wasn't the smart money on an even bigger boat? On July 19 stories began to surface in the Greek media of how the Prince and Princess were enjoying the largesse of Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a prominent member of the UAE royal family. His £340 million 146-metre (479ft) mega-yacht, Opera, is said to be one of the most opulent private vessels in the world. It boasts every amenity imaginable and in some cases, like Noah's Ark, two of everything – including helipads. While the story was ignored by the British media, it was picked up around the world. The Delhi-based Hindustan Times, for instance, ran its account under the headline 'Prince William, Kate Middleton sailing around Greece on yacht belonging to Emirati sheikh'. Some stories specified restaurants the royals were supposed to have visited. Social media hastened the story's spread, proclaiming certain 'facts' with inflexible certainty. On Kefalonia, meanwhile, where rumours move quicker than the Opera at full tilt, locals added their own embellishments. A taverna waiter in the pretty fishing village of Agia Efimia, where the Opera dropped anchor, tells me the royals were taken to the harbour by tender boat. 'There were about 12 black people carriers waiting for them. Then they were driven to the Melissani Cave which was closed for the day just for them.' But did he see William and Kate and the kids in the flesh? 'No, but my cousin Vangelis did, I'm sure of it.' Once located, however, Vangelis admits: 'I saw their executive cars speeding through the village, but I'm sorry – I cannot truly say that I eyeballed them.' Wiser souls in the village insisted the waiter and his cousin, and many more besides, were simply mistaken. What they really saw, they said, was not the Windsors but the Emiratis – something confirmed when the Daily Mail visited the roofless limestone Melissani Cave. There, cheerful gondoliers row tourists through a stalactite-lined cavern filled with brackish water of a startling ultramarine. One of the gondoliers says: 'It's fake news. The Arab royals and their children came and we closed the cave off for half an hour so they could have a private tour. 'But there was definitely no William and Kate.' It was a similar story at the restaurants on the island where the Prince and Princess and their children were supposed to have 'sampled delightful local delicacies'. Two expressed bemusement but promised a warm welcome should the royals drop by. A third said it was visited by an Opera crew member. 'Nobody from your royal family though,' said the manager. The Ionian Islands are steeped in rich mythology. Was the story of William and Kate's holiday proving just that – a myth? Besides, Lear jets and mega-yachts aren't a particularly good look for a prince who wears his green credentials proudly. William's Earthshot Prize gives £1 million every year to five projects tackling climate challenges. And wasn't it only a couple of months ago that he was hailing Sir David Attenborough on the eve of his new documentary, Ocean? In it, Sir David intones: 'I now understand that if we save the sea we save our world.' And it goes without saying that the great naturalist is decidedly sniffy about fuel-guzzling superyachts, which are said to cause even more damage to the environment than private jets. Maybe William and co had opted for a caravan holiday on the Isle of Wight instead. Sources were still insisting, though, that the royals had 'definitely' landed at Kefalonia's main airport. Then word reached the Daily Mail of a woman – a retired senior civil servant in the Greek defence ministry – who was said to have seen them first hand. The only known person, in fact, to have laid eyes on them. We traced her to her home overlooking enchanting Mavrouna Bay, close to the postcard-pretty village of Kioni on the tiny neighbouring island of Ithaca, which with emerald shores, wooded hills and secluded beaches is even more beautiful than Kefalonia. Aged 64, Penelope Likoudi was born and raised on the island, where she now owns a number of luxury apartments. A friend says: 'She is a respected lady, someone of high standing here.' She's a huge admirer of the royals too, has visited Buckingham Palace and Balmoral, 'devours' everything written about them and 'cried for days' when Princess Diana died. Over lemonade and cake at a cafe overlooking secluded Mavrouna Bay, she takes up the story of her royal encounter. Every day, she says, she swims in the bay, 'where I do exercises in the water for my back'. Last Tuesday was no different but this time there was a yacht moored about 100 metres or so from the shore and vaguely mindful of the stories of William and Kate, she decided to check it out. 'It was a possibility as a lot of celebrities come to this very spot. I think it was sometime after 11.30 in the morning,' she recalled. 'I swam out beyond the warning buoy and was about 30 metres (100ft) from the yacht when I saw them. Kate was standing on the top level with Charlotte and Louis. She was wearing a dark wraparound dress. 'There was an older lady next to them, possibly Kate's mother, but I wasn't able to see her well. 'I literally shivered with excitement. I was shocked, I couldn't believe it. 'Now I wish I'd called out hello to them. But I didn't, I got star-struck and couldn't get the words out. There was no sign of William or George though.' Did they see her? 'I think they must have done. I was the only one swimming that far out. You know, there was only a handful of locals on the beach.' 'They were looking at the wonderful bays, all green with trees coming all the way down to the sea. And I thought that maybe they would take out a boat so I waited for a bit,' she said. 'There was some sort of movement in the lower deck – the crew were untying something. 'But I couldn't stay long. I have only limited time because my mother is 94 and bedridden and I needed to get back to her. First though, when I got to dry land, I went to the top point of the cape and took some pictures of the boat with my phone.' It transpires that the Prince and Princess were in fact on the 50 metre (164ft) Almax, one of the world's first fuel-cell superyachts which is estimated to be worth £40million. Built by Italian firm San Lorenzo, it is described as a 'huge milestone in the future of sustainable boating'. That at least should deflect any criticism heading the Prince's way. Sure enough, Penelope's sighting tallies with maritime records which show that the Almax left Kioni the following day. It returned to Argostoli on Friday. There remains one mystery. Witnesses saw a different party exit the boat the next morning. So had the royals got off elsewhere? Intriguingly, on the morning Almax left Mavrouna there were said to be several other superyachts in the bay, including the Norn, the boat mentioned by the taxi driver when I first arrived in Kefalonia. 'The bay is like a catwalk for these yachts,' said a gift shop owner, adding that basketball legend Michael Jordan's yacht was 'also here on the same day'. Before Almax sped north a man arrived on Norn – which is owned by Microsoft mogul Charles Simonyi – by helicopter. Some locals speculated fancifully that it might be William. Unlikely, says Penelope. 'But either way, it's a shame I didn't get to see him.' Others in Kioni spoke of a visit William and Harry made to the village with their mother in 1995. 'Perhaps he was making a nostalgic return, a trip down memory lane,' says one woman. 'The English royals love it here. Charles and Diana stopped off on their honeymoon. And Charles and Camilla came ashore at Mavrouna in 2012. 'Now William has returned like Odysseus.' The Greek hero's delayed return to Ithaca is the plot of Homer's epic poem Odyssey. As Penelope heads for home, she speaks of the 'magic of Mavrouna and its special energy'. She adds: 'Kate has been unwell and I hope their holiday helped them. I hope they come back again. But I have no wish to see Harry and Meghan as I just can't stand them. 'For now I will treasure this special memory. I just wish I'd said hello. Maybe we could have had a chat.' William and Charlotte subsequently flew to Switzerland on Sunday to cheer on the Lionesses as they won the Euros final. It is understood that the family are now back in Britain.

Games Inbox: When is the next State of Play for PS5?
The Wednesday letters page is shocked at how old Football Manager is, as one reader is very impressed with the money he saved on PS Plus. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@ PlayStation Direct There's so much chatter about a new Nintendo Direct that I can only assume it will happen this week but since I haven't got a Switch 2 I'm only casually interested. What I am interested in though is when are we going to get a new State of Play? I know no-one knows but it feels like we haven't any proper ones this whole year, given none have had any really big announcements. The June not-E3 one was especially bad, to the point where I really don't know why they even bothered. It seems to be about four months between each one, so I guess we're looking at around September or October for the next? The yea will be almost over by then, especially in terms of video game releases, and then we'll just be relying on The Game Awards to announce new stuff… which Sony doesn't tend to use. At some point they're going to have to announce the PlayStation 6 too, so are they going to try and turn on the charm then or just make the reveal another boring blog? Korbie New name I think the big mistake for Call Of Duty this year is making it another Black Ops. I assume this is because all their studios are out of alignment still, because they're still not taking turns in the same order they used to, but I really think that the same thing twice in a row is just going to emphasise that these are the same games again and again. I guess the logic was that Black Ops is set in lots of different time periods and it'll seem different that way but then why not give it a different name? Make it seem more different even if it isn't really. I'm not even sure what the last original one was. The WW2 game I guess but that barely counts, after that it's… Infinite Warfare? If Battlefield 6 puts up more competition than usual, then I think that will be for the best for both series. EA needed to make a real effort with Battlefield and Activision needs a wake-up call to stop letting everything stagnate. Wooshi Battlefield magic RE: Lotto's email on 28th July. I fully agree that I am looking forward to Battlefield 6. I really enjoyed the series up to Battlefield 4 but didn't gel with any of the settings or ideas after that. Call Of Duty can be fun but it's just a bit too arcadey for me. I find Battlefield has a deeper, strategic side which rewards tactics over just reflexes. I also enjoy it being less gimmicky than Call Of Duty, which has ridiculous skins and weapon effects. Not to mention I am looking forward to a game which won't be out of favour 12 months after launching. When you spend so much on a game, knowing that it will be 'old' in a year or less really puts me off. Fingers crossed Battlefield 6 recaptures some of the old magic! The marble-counting minigame in 1-2-Switch was incredible, but unfortunately, barely any games truly took advantage of this function, not even Nintendo themselves. I get the feeling the same is going to happen with the mouse controls for Switch 2. But maybe (hard to predict Nintendo, of course) they're going to release a new Super Mario Maker and possibly Zelda Dungeon Maker (expand the one in Link's Awakening?) to showcase the benefits of mouse controls. Mario Paint just dropped on the Switch Online catalogue, so there is hope! ttfp saylow (gamertag) Now playing: Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom GC: We agree that a Super Mario Maker seems a no-brainer, but then again Nintendo rarely does the obvious thing. 80s management I'm going to be honest, I had no idea that Football Manager went back so far. 1982 is crazy for any franchise to still be going today. I can think of a couple of arcade games (including Mario/Donkey Kong) and that's about it. I got curious about it all though, after reading your story, and after a quick search on YouTube came up with this video of Kevin Toms playing the game in the modern day. Fascinating stuff to me as a 32-year-old, as the original game both looks impossibly prehistoric and also strangely similar to the current version. It is still football at the end of the day, I suppose, but still crazy that the concept is that old. DrEd Only in America I actually would've liked to have seen a Horizon spin-off set in China, which seems to have been original idea of this Tencent clone game. I really am sick of playing games set in the US and there are a whole bunch of franchises, like Fallout and GTA that are always set there, for no reason other than that's where the most customers are. Except that probably wouldn't be the case if publishers were more willing to reach out and feature other countries. We've seen how things like Black Myth: Wukong have done on Steam, purely because of China, but do you think GTA 6 is going to do that well over there? Or whatever Fallout game finally comes out next. Europe may be used to putting up with games set in America, because they won't set ones here, but China and India and other emerging markets won't. They'll either make their own games or just ignore the whole concept. It's a shame because everyone would benefit from more variety in settings. I'd much rather the next Fallout was set somewhere else than the US, because it being in the US really isn't important, even though you could make that argument for GTA. But even then a change would be far better than a rest, especially as there already is a GTA game set in London. Mork Retro immersion I really like that Nintendo has released Mario Paint for Switch 2 but I really wish they'd get rid of those ugly borders for their emulated stuff, it is so unnecessary and completely ruins the retro immersion as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure people have been complaining about that for years but Nintendo never listens, which is for good and bad. Mostly good though, so I won't whine too much. I really hope they accelerate their GameCube plans though, because at this rate – and based on how they've been previous generations – the Switch 3 will be knocking on the door an they'll only have got round to the very basics. Scolom Cheap thrills So, I got a PlayStation 5 not long after launch, not owning a PlayStation since the PlayStation 2 I knew there were a few games I'd missed out on but honestly, after I played the excellent God Of War reboot it gathered dust really, as I had an Xbox Series X and was mainly using that until God Of War Ragnarök came out and my dad passed away, which left me a little time off to enjoy that amazing game. Then I sold the PlayStation 5 and my Xbox Series X, as I found out I had a funeral to pay for. I picked up a cheap second-hand Xbox Series S for around £150 and that kept me busy. Then last month my TV broke. So I decided to upgrade to a lovey 65' 120Hz TV which almost looked sad when I plugged the Xbox Series S in. Then I walked past Cash Converters and they had a PlayStation 5 slim disk version for £280, so I put a deposit down and got it about 10 days ago. I have to say, with a £10 subscription to PS Plus, I have blitzed thorough God Of War again, The Last Of Us Part 1, Astro Bot, and started off on Ragnarök, Cyberpunk 2077, and Ghost Of Tsushima. All I can say is how impressed I have been. Had I had a PlayStation 4, maybe I wouldn't be so impressed but with all those under my belt, plus anything I can get through in the next 20 days, I have to admit for £290 I've been absolutely spoilt rotten. And I still have a huge list of games to get through. So thank you Xbox, for making such a mess of this generation and convincing me to jump ship. I have more than enough to keep me busy until the next generation, which I will not be joining early. And people say gaming is expensive!
