Rahul Gandhi to launch campaign to revamp Congress in Madhya Pradesh
Ahead of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi's Bhopal visit on June 3, the Madhya Pradesh Congress on Monday said that the tour would consist of multiple meetings and discussions aimed at revamping the party in the State before the next Assembly elections in 2028.
Mr. Gandhi, who is set to visit the State just three days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi was here on May 31, is scheduled to launch the 'Sangathan Srajan Abhiyan (Organisation Rejuvenation Campaign)' aimed at reorganising the party in the State.
The nationwide campaign had been announced on December 26, 2024, at a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held in Karnataka's Belgavi. The party has already declared 2025 as the year to strengthen its organisation across the nation.
Addressing a press conference in Bhopal, former Union Minister and former State Congress chief Arun Yadav said, 'This campaign is a decisive step towards reorganising the Congress in Madhya Pradesh and building a deep connection with the public. Under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi ji, the party is once again committed to connect with public sentiments and build a strong organisation at the grassroots level'.
'This is not just an organisational discussion, but an effort to connect the soul of the Congress with the public movement again,' Mr. Yadav added.
During his one-day visit, Mr. Gandhi is scheduled to have separate meetings with the MPCC political affairs committee, the party's MPs and MLAs in the State, and the AICC-appointed observers, as well as the State unit-appointed in-charges for the campaign.
The party had on May 31 announced 11 additional observers for the campaign in Madhya Pradesh.
Mr. Gandhi is also slated to address a gathering of State unit office bearers, district and block presidents, and several other party leaders.
State unit's media department in-charge Mukesh Nayak said that the campaign would be focused on connecting with the public through thought, connect and dialogue on the ground.
'This campaign will create catalytic groups which will remain active in the field and expose the politics of lies and illusion of the BJP,' Mr. Nayak told reporters.
Losses over the years
The party has been out of power in the State since 2003, except for the 15 months from December 2018 to March 2020 when Kamal Nath was the Chief Minister. The government, however, was toppled after 22 MLAs led by Jyotiraditya Scindia, now a Union Minister, walked over to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The party also failed to return to power in the 2023 Assembly polls after it was reduced to 66 seats against the BJP's 163. Months later, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party failed to open its account in the State and lost the lone constituency, Chhindwara, that it had won in 2019, to the BJP.
While it managed to win one of the two seats that went to bypolls in November 2024, the Congress has faced various organisational challenges in Madhya Pradesh, including the lack of coordination among State leaders in targeting the ruling BJP.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday said that the demolition drive conducted at Madrasi Camp was action taken in strict compliance with court directives. She stated that the court had ordered the removal of this slum four times in order to clean the Barapulla drain aimed at preventing future flood-related disasters in the capital. "Today, when I went there, women, elderly, youth - everyone cried bitterly. They were saying that they made a mistake by voting for the BJP. If Kejriwal were here, he would not have let our slums be demolished," posted Atishi. The operation was carried out to resolve the flooding issues caused by the narrowed drain, which obstructs water flow during heavy rains. 370 encroachments have been demolished, with 189 residents deemed eligible for resettlement and allocated flats in Narela, while 181 are ineligible for resettlement.

Telangana suffered due to BRS greed for commissions: Uttam
HYDERABAD: Telangana has suffered a permanent loss in the irrigation sector due to the 'wrong decisions' taken by the previous BRS government and its 'greed for commissions', alleged Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy. In a press statement issued on Saturday, Uttam countered the claims made by BRS MLA and former irrigation minister T Harish Rao while making a PowerPoint presentation on Kaleshwaram earlier in the day. Uttam said that only 162 tmcft water was lifted from Godavari from Kaleshwaram in five years. The BRS termed Medigadda as the 'heart' of Kaleshwaram and though its construction was completed in 2019, officials lifted only 61 tmcft in 2019–20, 31.82 tmcft in 2020–21, 33 tmcft in 2021–22, 25.97 tmcft in 2022–23 and 8.93 tmcft in 2023–24, a total of 162 tmcft, he said. During the flood season in these five years, around 63 tmcft water went waste into the sea. How was the BRS government able to provide irrigation to 22 lakh acres with just 99 tmcft, he wondered. 'In July, 2022 the Annaram pump house was submerged in water. In the same year, all the motors of the Kannepalli (Medigadda) pump house were damaged. In that year, officials could lift only 25 tmcft,' Uttam said and recalled that the piers of Medigadda sank on October 21, 2023. While Farakka barrage was constructed with a rock foundation to divert Ganga waters, three barrages in Kaleshwaram were constructed to divert funds, he alleged. The minister recalled that a huge rally with elephants was taken out during the BRS regime after the KCR government signed an agreement with Maharashtra to construct a barrage at Tummidihetti. However, it was later shifted to Medigadda as they thought they could not get money if Tummidihetti barrage was constructed, he added. Uttam also informed Harish that Sriramsagar, Yellampali, Lower Manair, Upper Manair and Singur projects were constructed by previous Congress governments. 'The Congress government spent Rs 6,156 crore on Pranahitha-Chevella project before the formation of the state. Till 2016, the total amount spent on Pranahitha-Chevella was Rs 11,679 crore,' he said.
