Welcome to the age of office paranoia, when layoffs, AI, and job insecurity are terrorizing workers
Before that, she was already jumpy. She'd be unnerved by everyday workplace tasks, like when her manager asked to hop on the phone on short notice, or a companywide meeting suddenly appeared on her calendar.
It's a sign of the times as workplace power swings away from workers, and layoffs dominate headlines. While layoffs are still low relative to historic levels, they loom large in workers' minds.
A miasma of new stresses is also permeating white-collar offices: the threat of AI taking jobs, stricter return-to-office pushes, and a new hardcore culture that's eroding work-life balance. There's also the hollowing out of middle managers, and the Great Flattening has left some with fear that they'll be next.
"Workers are feeling disempowered," Michele Williams, a professor of management and entrepreneurship at the University of Iowa, said, adding that this trend reared its head during the 2008 recession and is now back again.
"If the boss walks by and doesn't say 'hi,' are they planning to fire me, as opposed to the boss was just busy that day and just didn't notice you?" Williams said. "They're looking for these social cues and overinterpreting social cues because of that insecurity."
It's what experts call " paranoid attribution," where employees read negative meaning into regular workplace occurrences. Do worse snacks mean the company is struggling financially? Is a warmer office a sign that management is cutting costs on air conditioning? Are more interns a good sign or a bad sign for the hiring budget?
The fear isn't good for anyone — when employees are anxious, they probably also aren't doing their best work. The paranoia may be more psychological than based in reality. Overall, layoffs are still low and concentrated in white-collar sectors, especially at big-name companies that dominate headlines. While hiring has slowed in the last year, the unemployment rate is still relatively low, as well. However, it has gotten much more difficult to get a new white-collar job, and promotions have slowed way down.
The paranoia over employment uncertainty pushed Smith out of the corporate world completely. These days, she's self-employed as a content creator and reseller. "I feel so much better because being self-employed, obviously, I'm not going to get laid off," Smith said.
Monica Wiant, a 47-year-old copywriter in Minnesota, has completely changed her perspective on work and her career after getting laid off twice in two years. The first time she was laid off was the day that she had arranged a return-to-office party for the workers reporting to her. She was also coming off a glowing performance review in her role as a VP.
"The day that I got that news, it was like going to the worst surprise party I've ever been to," Wiant said. In retrospect, she said, there were some warning signs. Budgets for her department kept getting reduced, and they were asked to do more with less. Advertising budgets shrank, and some hiring was paused.
"I feel like so many companies have lost sight of how important the human experiences of their employees are. There's no place that's less motivating than a downsizing workplace," Wiant said. "It's really hard to go to work every day and to know that you may not have a future here no matter how hard you work."

How paranoia is reshaping workers and the workplace
Mark Freeman, 65, has some advice after spending the last 25 or so years in supply chain technology and getting laid off twice throughout his career.
"As soon as they say, 'don't worry, no one's going to get laid off,' you should get your résumé out there and start looking, because you can't believe them." He said he's learned it's important to be agile and constantly looking for other job opportunities; waiting until after a layoff will mean you're already behind.
Attention on layoffs, as Business Insider's Tim Paradis writes, might bite into productivity amid worker unease. Williams said that workers become less engaged as their energy shifts from actually getting work done toward worrying and becoming hypervigilant.
On the other hand, employees might also cling harder to old adages about becoming indispensable at work. This is what some Big Tech companies are hoping for when they place more emphasis on performance reviews in a shift toward a more "hardcore" management style.
Williams said working harder is good advice when a promotion or raise seems realistic.
"But if you push it to the extreme, you're going to have workers hoarding information and knowledge because then they become indispensable," she said. "But the sharing of that knowledge is what the organization needs to increase collaboration and innovation."
Benjamin Friedrich, a professor at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management, said that, in isolation, workers might not be willing to put in extra effort if they feel their trust has been broken by their firms.
Of course, Friedrich said, not all power is lost among workers right now: While the worker power pendulum is still swinging, the "amenities" of the Great Resignation and the pandemic era haven't faded completely.
"If you look at the breadth and the coverage of remote work or what share of workers can work some of the time at home, it's been very stable," Friedrich said.
By the time her second layoff rolled around, Wiant wasn't as surprised and was more attuned to those warning signs. While weathering two layoffs was far from pleasant, it's also made Wiant turn introspective.
"I don't feel as deep of a need to have all of my needs met from work," Wiant said. "I realize that I can cultivate a sense of purpose and creative challenge and intellectual challenge from other things in my life."

A laid-off Accenture manager has been job hunting for 21 months. Recruiters keep telling him he's too expensive.
Alexander Valen thought his more than two decades of experience in the tech industry would help him find a job, but he said it sometimes feels like a disadvantage. In November 2023, Valen was laid off from his project manager role at the consulting firm Accenture, where he said he managed up to 150 developers, architects, and software testers, depending on the project. Over the past 21 months, Valen said he's had more than two dozen interviews but hasn't been able to land a job. He and his wife, a stay-at-home mom, have relied on DoorDash earnings, unemployment benefits, and family support. But it hasn't been enough, and Valen said they've fallen behind on their mortgage payments. "More recently, it's just dead — I don't hear anything," Valen, who's 51 and lives in Florida, said of his job applications. "It's like a black hole, and I don't know what's going on." In recent months, Valen said even landing interviews has become challenging. The end of his Accenture tenure and his conversations with recruiters have led him to draw one conclusion: It's a particularly tough job market for workers with a lot of experience and corresponding pay expectations. "The first thing recruiters say when they see my profile is it's very expensive," he said. Valen's experience reflects a broader shift in the US labor market that's made it more difficult for workers in managerial positions to find jobs. Several corporations, including Microsoft, Google, Intel, Amazon, and Walmart, have announced plans to reduce the number of managers. And it's not just big businesses. Gusto, a small and midsize payroll and benefits platform, found that manager firings and layoffs have risen 66% between January 2022 and September 2024 for those ages 45 to 54 — and more than 400% for those ages 35 to 44. This trend, dubbed the Great Flattening, reflects a broader push to reduce costs and bureaucracy, moves business leaders say will make their organizations more efficient. But for some laid-off managers, finding new employment has been far from easy. Amid economic uncertainty, ranging from tariffs to the early impacts of AI adoption, US businesses are hiring at nearly the slowest pace in more than a decade. Struggling to find jobs at his pay level Throughout his final year on the job, Valen said he noticed a shift: clients were requesting lower-cost workers, and he spent as long as two months "on the bench," meaning that he wasn't assigned to any client projects. Since being laid off, Valen's pay level has continued to feel like a barrier. His Accenture role paid about $87 an hour, and he said he's targeted roles that pay between roughly $65 and $85 an hour or roughly $135,000 to $177,000 annually. But in the current hiring landscape, some recruiters have told him that his compensation level is too steep for their clients. It's left Valen struggling to find openings where there's demand for someone with his experience and salary expectations. "I applied for one job and they're like, 'We're going to have to pay you $35 an hour.' That's really, really low." Valen said he decided to stay in the running for the role but didn't get an interview. While he's willing to stray a bit from his target compensation range, he said he doesn't want to go below $50 an hour — about $104,000 annually. A competitive job market has him exploring other options Over the last few months, Valen said his job search has been particularly frustrating. When he manages to find a job posting that seems like a good fit, there are often already hundreds of applicants, making his chances of landing the role feel slim. Valen said recruiters he's connected with have told him they get up to hundreds of LinkedIn connection requests a day, and that it's become difficult to figure out which candidates to prioritize. AI tools are partially to blame, as they make it easier for job seekers to apply to more roles than ever, and perhaps even help some people misrepresent their skills and qualifications. In response to his job search challenges, Valen said he's expanded his search beyond project manager positions to business analyst and sales roles — even applying for a kitchen team member role at Chick-fil-A, though it didn't lead to an interview. He's also tried to build his AI knowledge through experimentation with various tools, though he's unsure how much of an edge this will give him over other candidates. If he could give advice to other struggling job seekers, he'd tell them not to give up and to look for opportunities to improve their skills while looking for work. But as his search drags on, he said it sometimes feels like no advice makes much of a difference. "It's a crazy market," he said. "I don't know what to do right now."

Gen Z's career cliff is worse for men — thanks to one corner of the job market
It's harder to be a man in finance lately, let alone a tech bro. Zoomers have had a rocky debut on the job market. Traditional paths to success in fields like tech, law, and government are disappearing, and AI is disrupting the entry-level rung of the career ladder. Zoomers are questioning the ROI of a college education and increasingly pivoting toward blue-collar work. The overall labor market also took a dive in July, indicating that companies have less demand for workers and fewer Americans are participating in the labor market. But not all 20-something job seekers are struggling at the same rate: Gen Z men appear to be speeding toward a career cliff faster. The cohort has tended to have higher unemployment rates than their female peers since the pandemic, and young women's dominance in the few healthy corners of the market could be a key reason. "Employers are holding steady with the workers they have, and workers are also holding steady in their roles. That can make it harder for new labor market entrants to come in," Elise Gould, a senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute, said, adding that "it could be tougher for men who are looking for jobs where there's just not a whole lot of hiring right now." Gen Z women dominate in the growing healthcare sector Gen Z women tend to have higher job stability, partially because of their dominance in in-demand sectors like healthcare and the nursing field. Healthcare is one of few industries showing job growth for the six months ending in July. Hospitality and education — two of the other fields with growing job numbers — are also predominantly women. The data comes as the labor market is cooling: the US fell short of the expected 106,000 jobs in July, adding just 73,000 roles with an uptick in employment to 4.2%, and revisions to the previous two months showed that there were more than 250,000 fewer jobs created over that period than previously estimated. Tech and business especially are seeing a hiring slowdown and increased layoffs. BLS data shows that the primarily-male information and business sectors — which often employ jobs like computer scientists, consultants, and analysts — have had among the lowest employment growth in 2025. They're also some of the entry-level roles that are most impacted by emerging AI and the Great Flattening. About 9 in 10 licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, and nurse practitioner roles were held by women in 2022, per the most recently available Bureau of Labor Statistics analysis. The number of men entering the profession stalled between 2019 to 2021 after decades of consistent growth. Nursing was among the college majors with the lowest unemployment rate, per a 2023 New York Federal Reserve analysis. Semee Lim, 26, spends her days caring for babies and supporting new parents in a Tampa-area newborn intensive care unit. It's a busy job, but Lim said her role is always in demand. "I've been blessed enough to have a pretty smooth experience job hopping," said Lim, who moved to Florida after starting her career near her Maryland hometown. "There's always a nursing shortage." Since graduating in 2021, Lim said she can remember working with just three male nurses. As Gould explained, this isn't a new trend: young men have long had a higher unemployment rate than young women. But the employment gap between 22-to-27-year-old women and men with bachelor's degrees is widening. The unemployment rate for recent male graduates has risen steeply from less than 5% to 7% over the past 12 months, per a Financial Times analysis of the Census Bureau's Current Population Survey. For young female graduates, joblessness is largely unchanged over the same period. It's also becoming more common for young women to economically and educationally outpace men. In 1995, one-quarter of both young men and young women held bachelor's degrees, an analysis of population data by the Pew Research Center found. By 2024, 47% of women ages 25 to 34 had one, compared with 37% of men. A Lending Tree analysis of 2021 US Census Bureau data found that single women also owned 2.7 million more homes in America than single men. At the same time, industries with predominantly female workers tend to have lower pay — even if they have more job stability. It's a challenge that Lim said she thinks about often: "Nursing doesn't pay as much as I would like it to, but it's definitely such a rewarding job," she said. The median entry-level nurse salary was $65,000 annually in 2023, for example, while the median entry-level computer scientist salary was $80,000. It's likely that healthcare jobs will become even more necessary as baby boomers age. "If you can do something about or improve working conditions and pay and benefits in sectors that may have been traditionally female-dominated, then you may attract more men into those occupations," Gould said. "I don't think it's rocket science that we have undervalued some of the work that we have historically done."
