Netanyahu faces toughest test yet with first vote to dissolve Knesset

New York Posta day ago

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could see himself booted from power as Knesset faces the first vote to dissolve parliament on Wednesday over frustrations of the protracted war in Gaza.
Israel's longest-serving prime minister is facing the most serious challenge to his power yet after his government began enforcing the mandatory draft for the ultra-Orthodox community to help fight the war against Hamas.
While the general public had demanded the sect of religious scholars no longer be exempt from fighting, the move caused a rupture in Netanyahu's far-right coalition, who may turn against the premier and vote to dissolve the Knesset on Wednesday.

The Shahs party, which has traditionally supported Netanyahu, said Monday that they plan to vote in favor of dissolution unless their terms are met.
The Degel HaTorah faction, another group Netanyahu needs to stay in power, has been threatening to leave the government since last week.
'Basically, they don't really care about the war and the economic situation of the state and anything else but their communal interest, and the focus of this communal interest is getting the exemption from serving in the army' said Shuki Friedman, an expert on religion and state affairs and vice president of the Jewish People Policy Institute, a Jerusalem think tank.
The vote would be one of four needed to bring forward new elections, which polls show Netanyahu would lose given the majority of Israelis no longer back him over the decision to end a cease-fire deal in March and return to all-out war in the Gaza Strip.

The prime minister has also seen his popularity wane over the years-long corruption charges levied against him, as well as his government's role in the security failings that allowed Hamas to pull off the Oct. 7, 2023, terror attack that saw more than 1,200 people killed.
A March poll from the Israel Democracy Institute found that around 70% of Israelis wanted Netanyahu to resign after ending the cease-fire.
Netanyahu, however, can still pull through with a last-minute deal with members of his coalition to survive the vote from the opposition.
4 If new elections are triggered, Netanyahu will likely be ousted from power, according to Israeli polls.

Even if he survives the first vote, his coalition is likely to suffer a major blow from the politically connected ultra-Orthodox community, who continue to protest the draft that is interfering with their full-time religious studies and way of life.
If the vote passes, additional elections will be held in the government in the following weeks to move forward to dissolution and holding a new round of elections for prime minister.
If Netanyahu is able to survive, another vote for dissolvement can't be held for another six months, allowing the prime minister to stay in power until 2026.

Fox News Politics Newsletter: Maxine Waters' History of Fanning Flames

Welcome to the Fox News Politics newsletter, with the latest updates on the Trump administration, Capitol Hill and more Fox News politics content. Here's what's happening… Eighteen-term Democrat Rep. Maxine Waters resurfaced in the news after several run-ins with federal authorities during the ongoing illegal immigration riots in California, just as her House tenure began amid prior Angeleno unrest. In 1992, as she was finishing her first term in Congress, the not-guilty verdict against White LAPD officers seen beating a Black motorist named Rodney King sparked a similar conflagration in Los Angeles, and Waters was in the midst of it then as well. The riots greatly affected her South Los Angeles district, and Waters was quoted at the time as appearing to downplay the violence not as a "riot" but as "just a bunch of crazy people who went out and did bad things for no reason."…READ MORE RIFT HITS RATINGS: Musk's favorability among Republicans drops 16 points after Trump feud SUPPORT SLIPS AWAY: Public opinion turns against Trump-backed tax and spending bill, new survey finds 'NEXT-GENERATION': Trump's 'next-generation' missile defense plan gains momentum as US faces foreign threats WIN FOR TRUMP: Appeals court grants Trump short-term win over Boasberg in immigration ruling 'ABSOLUTE EVIL': Hamas attack on aid workers leaves eight dead as org fears some were 'taken hostage' WINS BIG: Israel's Netanyahu holds on to power, attempt to dissolve government falls short RED ALERT: Taiwan ramps up Coast Guard and military readiness in face of Beijing's 'gray zone' warfare SPENDING SHOWDOWN: GOP lawmakers prepare to slash $9.1 billion from USAID, NPR and PBS in rare vote POWER OF THE PURSE: Fate of Trump's $9.4 billion spending cut package hangs on House GOP moderates TRUMP TEAM TARGETED: Democrat congresswoman draws boos over 'shameful' sexism remark in committee hearing with Treasury Secretary TAX BOMB TICKING: Pence group warns Senate not to rubber-stamp Trump's 'big, beautiful bill' 'WIN THE ARGUMENT': Fetterman issues 'DO' and 'DO NOT' list, doubling down on anti-violence message after calling out LA 'anarchy' TRIMMING THE FAT: Republican senators roll out DOGE budget proposals for Trump's 'big, beautiful bill' TRACK RECORD LOOMS: Mayor Karen Bass' handling of LA riots adds to decades of political baggage 'GET THE HELL OUT': California Dem tells Hegseth he's an 'embarrassment' to the US, should 'get the hell out' of the DOD LAW ENFORCED: National Guard authorized to detain ICE attackers, DHS says Get the latest updates on the Trump administration and Congress, exclusive interviews and more on

Simone & Riley's spat over women's sports: Letters to the Editor — June 13, 2025

The Issue: Simone Biles slamming Riley Gaines for not 'uplifting' trans athletes in women's sports Simone Biles obviously attended former Vice President Kamala Harris' school of nonsense speech. Her apology tweet was straight up gobbledygook ('Finding Balance,' June 11). Advertisement Biles' original tweet was much clearer in establishing her cowardice in supporting men in women's sports, only once she herself had all her medals and bowed out. Elizabeth Clancy Barnegat, NJ Advertisement Simone Biles has seven Olympic gold medals tucked away safe and sound where no transgender female can defeat her out of them ('Gaines back flips script,' June 9). In 2017, Biles tweeted that men competing against women could take away gold medals from women. But now, Biles has blasted sports activist and former college swimmer Riley Gaines for consistently standing up for women's sports to be for true women only. I'd bet my last dollar that Biles is setting herself up for a lucrative deal to be a sportscaster in gymnastics. Advertisement She can't do that if she doesn't carry the transgender banner in support. Dan Arthur Pryor Belvidere, NJ Oh, horror: A Biles tweet from eight years ago has been cited to justify the hate campaign against a trans athlete who actually shared her top spots with three biological females. Advertisement It says a lot that Gaines and The Post decided to gloss over that fact for their own pointed purposes. Fredrick Beondo Richmond Hill I agree with Simone Biles that sports should try to be as inclusive as possible. Yet female-only categories should be maintained. And if all-female teams are competing against mixed-gender teams, there should always be an award for the top all-girl team, even if that team is not the overall winner. This approach would allow everyone to compete while maintaining the integrity of all-girls teams. Bruce Couchman Advertisement Ottawa, Canada For those of you on Biles' side, who think that transgender athletes competing in all-women's sports is fair, I have one question I'd like answered: How are trans boys doing competing against biological boys? Greta Thunberg has the audacity to say she was kidnapped ('Greta refuses to watch 10/7 film,' June 11). Get a dictionary and learn the meaning of the word 'kidnapped,' Greta. Advertisement Innocent Israelis were kidnapped by Hamas terrorists, rapists and murderers — and many of them remain hostages in horrific, inhumane conditions. Yet she has never uttered a single word about them. Her voice may have carried weight as a climate activist, but as for creating awareness of what is happening in Gaza, she knows nothing. Betty Schwartz Advertisement Livingston, NJ My recommendation to Greta Thunberg is to watch the Oct. 7 video. If you know both sides of the story, at least people can't call you ignorant. Rob Spieler Sharon Springs Thunberg was drawing attention to an issue that she was concerned about, an activity she has been doing for years and developed quite a following for. The Israeli military's approach of storming boats with weaponry against unarmed civilians was a great way to bring Israel bad publicity, given live-streaming is so easy now. Dennis Fitzgerald Melbourne, Australia Greta is an ignorant coward, unable to look the horror of terrorism in the face. Thomas Birnbaum Manhattan Want to weigh in on today's stories? Trump: Israeli attack on Iran not 'imminent,' but could well happen

US President Donald Trump on Thursday said he does not believe an Israeli strike on Iran is "imminent," amid high tensions in the region. "Well, I don't want to say imminent, but it looks like it's something that could very well happen," Trump said, after US personnel were withdrawn from bases in Iraq over fears that Teheran could retaliate with attacks on US facilities in the Middle East. Trump said an agreement with Tehran over Iran's nuclear programme is close, ahead of another round of negotiations in Oman on Sunday. US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said he considers an Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear facilities without US approval to be unlikely. "I just don't in my mind see that that would be something that would likely happen because of the closeness of the relationship and the trust," Huckabee told the Israeli newspaper Jediot Achronot amid speculation about an imminent attack by Israel against Iranian nuclear facilities. "There is a trust between the US and Israel," he added. However, he said that the decision whether or not to attack Iran ultimately lies with Israel. The ambassador also repeated threats by US President Donald Trump over what could follow if the talks fail. "If the Iranians don't come to the conclusion that they're not going to have a nuclear weapon, that it will be a very unfortunate decision on their part," Huckabee said. Several US media outlets have recently reported that Israel is preparing an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities. However, it is unclear whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government has already made a final decision.
