Cedars-Sinai is a nonprofit healthcare organization based in Los Angeles. It's comprised of hospitals, clinics, and research facilities. Founded in 1902, Cedars-Sinai has more than 40 locations, employs over 4,500 physicians and nurses, and serves more than 1 million patients every year.
Situation analysis
Caroline Goldzweig, chief medical officer of Cedars-Sinai Medical Network, told Business Insider that the organization wanted to expand patients' access to primary care in a more efficient and convenient way. For instance, sometimes there are lengthy wait times for in-person doctor's appointments.
At the same time, Goldzweig said the organization was looking to reduce the administrative burden on physicians, including patient intake and data entry, so that they could focus on providing care.
To address these challenges, the organization launched Cedars-Sinai Connect in 2023. CS Connect is an artificial intelligence -powered virtual platform where patients can access healthcare support 24/7.
Goldzweig said the AI technology allows healthcare providers to better support their patients while improving the speed of care delivery. "The other exciting thing is the ability to offer patients care in ways that meet their needs," she said.
Key staff and partners
Goldzweig told Business Insider that CS Connect was built using K Health, a digital healthcare company providing AI-powered primary and urgent care services. Cedars-Sinai's information technology teams worked with K Health to sync patients' electronic health records into the platform, she said.
Cedars-Sinai's enterprise data intelligence and digital strategy teams were also involved in creating CS Connect. They continue to help manage it.
AI in action
The goal of the AI tool is to enable providers to spend more time counseling patients and making treatment decisions, rather than doing patient intake.
To access the AI features, patients log into CS Connect via a mobile app or its website. Goldzweig said a chat feature then starts asking the user questions about their symptoms.
The AI algorithm compares the patient's responses to their existing medical records and the records of other patients in the system who had similar symptoms. It then asks more detailed questions about a patient's specific health problems. The chatbot, for example, may prompt the patient to submit photos of their sore throat or rash.
Goldzweig said the chat function is similar to how a physician might identify a patient's ailment.
The AI then summarizes the patient's information — a task that usually demands manual effort from physicians — and recommends a treatment.
The data collected by CS Connect is "part of the efficiency process," Goldzweig said. "It allows the physicians to review it, to understand what's going on, and to validate things with the patient — ask a couple of clarifying questions and maybe get a little bit more history."
Physicians can choose to disagree with the AI's recommendations. Goldzweig said either way, they're required to sign off on each patient's treatment plan.
Did it work, and how did leaders know?
Goldzweig told BI that about 42,000 individual patients have used CS Connect.
In April 2025, Cedars-Sinai published a study in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine comparing AI treatment recommendations in CS Connect with final recommendations from doctors.
The study reviewed 461 physician-managed visits with AI recommendations for respiratory, urinary, vaginal, eye, and dental symptoms. Results showed that when AI and physician recommendations differed, the AI suggestions were often rated as higher quality.
The study found that 77% of AI recommendations were rated as optimal, while 67% of physicians' decisions were rated optimal.
For example, patients with recurring urinary tract infections sometimes encounter antibiotic resistance. Goldzweig said the AI was successful at identifying these patients and recommended a bacterial culture before prescribing antibiotics. In contrast, doctors sometimes prescribe medication without testing, which she said could result in the infection coming back.
Goldzweig added that the study suggests that the AI tool tends to be more guideline-focused, while physicians have the ability to adapt medical guidelines based on the nuance of a patient's case.
Goldzweig said the study has limitations, though. It examined only a few medical conditions and didn't factor in the nuance of individual patient cases. Another limitation is that the medical chart reviewers could see whether the recommendation was made by the AI or a physician.
Cedars-Sinai is working to expand CS Connect. The organization is piloting remote patient monitoring technology using AI to help people manage chronic diseases, like high blood pressure. It's also planning to use the AI technology to connect in-person urgent care visits with virtual care.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal appeals court has upheld a jury verdict condemning Google's Android app store as an illegal monopoly, clearing the way for a federal judge to enforce a potentially disruptive shakeup that's designed to give consumers more choices. The unanimous ruling issued Thursday by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals delivers a double-barreled legal blow for Google, which has been waylaid in three separate antitrust trials that resulted in different pillars of its internet empire being declared as domineering scofflaws monopolies since late 2023. The unsuccessful appeal represents a major victory for video game maker Epic Games, which launched a legal crusade targeting Google's Play Store for Android apps and Apple's iPhone app store nearly five years ago in an attempt to bypass exclusive payment processing systems that charged 15% to 30% commissions on in-app transactions. The jury's December 2023 rebuke of Google's app store for Android-powered smartphones began a cascade of setbacks that includes monopoly judgements against the company's ubiquitous search engine last year and the technology underlying its digital ad network earlier this year. Although not as lucrative as Google's search engine or ad system, the Play Store for Android apps has long been a gold mine that generated billions of dollars in annual revenue by taking a 15% to 30% cut from in-app transactions funneled through the company's own payment processing system. Following a month-long trial, a nine-person jury determined that Google had rigged its system to thwart alternative app stores from offering better deals to consumers and software developers. That verdict resulted in U.S. District Judge James Donato ordering Google to tear down digital walls shielding the Play Store from competition, triggering the company's appeal to overturn the jury's finding and void the judge's mandated shakeup. But a three-judge panel that heard Google's appeal in February rejected its lawyers' contention that Donato erred by allowing the case to be determined by a jury that deviated from the market definition outlined by another federal judge who mostly sided with Apple in Epic's case against the iPhone maker's app store. Epic's lawsuit 'was replete with evidence that Google's anticompetitive conduct entrenched its dominance, causing the Play Store to benefit from network effects,' the judges wrote in the decision. Unless Google can extend the enforcement delay placed on Donato's order issued last October, the company will have to begin an overhaul that includes making the Play Store's entire library of more than 2 million Android apps available to would-be rivals and also help distribute the alternative options. Google has argued that the required revisions will raise privacy and security risks by exposing consumers to scam artists and hackers masquerading as legitimate app stores. But Epic's lawyers have ridiculed Google's warnings about the changes as scare tactics in a desperate attempt to protect the fortunes of its corporate parent Alphabet Inc. Although Epic fell short in its attempt to have the iPhone's app store declared a monopoly, that case resulted in a judge issuing an order that required Apple to surrender exclusive control over the payment processing of in-app transactions and allow links to alternative systems without collecting a commission. Besides being hit with Donato's order, Google still faces further trouble ahead that could leave an even bigger dent in its finances. As part of the effort to address Google's illegal monopoly in search, a federal judge is weighing a proposal by the U.S. Justice Department that would require the sale of its Chrome web browser and ban the multibillion dollar deals that company has been making with Apple and others to lock-in its search engine as the main gateway to the internet. Google is also facing a proposed breakup of its advertising technology as part of the countermeasures to its monopoly in that business. A trial on that proposal is scheduled to begin in September.

With search today so full of AI slop and sites spamming SEO tricks, it's not unusual for people to append 'reddit' to their queries in hopes of finding useful answers to their questions. Google has tried to integrate results from Reddit in its search interface, and taking notice of the trend, Reddit has been experimenting with its own AI search as well. But the company has loftier ambitions: it wants to become the go-to search engine people use. Reddit's CEO, Steve Huffman, said as much during its second-quarter conference call on Thursday: 'Reddit is one of the few platforms positioned to become a true search destination. We offer something special, a breadth of conversations and knowledge you can't find anywhere else.' Huffman noted that Reddit's search function has more than 70 million weekly users, and its AI-powered Q&A product, Reddit Answers, is now used by 6 million people. Reddit Answers is currently available in a dozen countries, and the company plans to expand it globally as well as give it prominent placement in the site's interface. The company eventually wants to unify the core search function with Reddit Answers, and redesign its app to have the search box be more prominently visible. 'We're unifying those [Reddit search and Reddit Answers] into a single search experience, and we're gonna bring that front and center in the app. So, whether you're a new user opening the app for the first time or a returning user opening the app, that search box will be present immediately,' Huffman said on the call. People are increasingly being presented chat-styled search interfaces from products like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's new AI mode. Reddit understandably believes that tapping its rich trove of user posts and comments to help people find answers will help make its search function more useful. Reddit reported a positive second quarter, with revenue jumping 78% to $500 million from a year earlier. The company launched two new ad tools, which let marketers use Reddit data to spot trends, and leverage comments about brands in their campaigns.

In a court filing Thursday, Microsoft argued that the current version of its Copilot AI assistant for consumers should be excluded from the process of legal discovery — opposing an effort by the plaintiffs to require the team behind the product to turn over documents and materials deemed relevant to the case. The product 'did not exist at the time News Plaintiffs filed their complaints, is built on a different platform with new system architecture than the products named in News Plaintiffs' complaints, and involves hundreds of potential new custodians given that the back-end code was written by an entirely new team,' the filing said, using the legal term for people in possession of materials subject to discovery. But lawyers for the news organizations contend that Copilot is powered by the same core AI systems, performing the same functions, with the same alleged harms. 'Microsoft's refusal to provide discovery into the 'refreshed' version of consumer Copilot hamstrings News Plaintiffs' ability to investigate evidence critical for its case and to rebut Microsoft's fair use defense,' lawyers for the news organizations wrote in a filing Monday. They noted that Microsoft has confirmed that the new Copilot is powered by GPT-4o, an OpenAI model that's already involved in the litigation. They argued that this undermines Microsoft's claim that the new Copilot is fundamentally different, for purposes of the suit and the process of discovery. The lawsuit, filed in December 2023 in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, alleges that Microsoft and OpenAI engaged in large-scale, unauthorized scraping of copyrighted news articles to train AI models. By using their reporting to generate answers, the plaintiffs contend, the AI tools divert readers that would otherwise visit their news sites, impacting the market for their work and undermining their business models. The suit targets both companies due to their close partnership. Microsoft has invested billions of dollars into OpenAI, and the ChatGPT maker uses Microsoft's Azure cloud computing platform to build and train its AI models. These kinds of discovery battles are common in complex litigation. Lawyers for both sides have been arguing for more than a year over discovery issues related to everything from reporters' notes to OpenAI user data. No definitive court rulings have yet been made on the central question of the suit: whether the AI models infringe on copyright. Amazon reached a deal in May to license the New York Times' editorial content for use in its AI platforms, reportedly paying at least $20 million annually. The latest legal wrangling puts a spotlight on the Microsoft consumer AI division created last year under Suleyman, a high-profile figure in the AI world who co-founded Google's DeepMind. Suleyman joined Microsoft in March 2024 in a deal that saw the tech giant also hire a number of employees from his AI startup, Inflection AI. His team launched the new consumer version of Copilot in October 2024, separate from the Microsoft 365 Copilot business AI product. It has a redesigned user interface with features such as a personalized daily news summary, natural voice interactions, and the ability for the AI to act as a companion while browsing the web. Suleyman is not named in the filings, but the language refers to his team — noting, for example, that 'New Consumer Copilot was developed and marketed by a group of people who recently joined Microsoft.' Joining the New York Times in the suit are Daily News LP (parent of the New York Daily News), and the Center for Investigative Reporting.
