Shock move after Aussie artists sacked
A review of the governance of Creative Australia, Australia's arts funding body, found there had been 'a series of missteps, assumptions and missed opportunities' in the decision-making process around their dismissal.
Mr Sabsabi and Mr Dagostino were selected for as the artistic team for the Australian Pavilion at the prestigious 2026 Venice Biennale, an internationally-renowned art show.
But in February, the pair were controversially removed from the art show after questions were raised over previous artworks by Mr Sabsabi.
Two of them - one featuring Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and another video featuring footage of 9/11 and a clip of President George W. Bush saying 'thank you very much' - were attributed as the cause of the initial cancellation.

Acting Creative Australia Board Chair Wesley Enoch said the review was 'emphatic' in finding a 'unique set of circumstances' that the agency's board had to address.
'The Board has considered and reflected deeply on all relevant issues to find a path forward,' Mr Enoch said in a statement.
'The Board is now of the view that proceeding with the Artistic Team, Khaled Sabsabi and Michael Dagostino represents the preferred outcome.'
'The Board's decision reflects its commitment to the important principle of freedom of artistic expression, supported by a strong, transparent, and accountable governance framework.
'The decision the Board took in February has weighed heavily on many people, most particularly the artistic team and for that we are sorry.

The two artists released a joint statement on social media accepting the reinvitation.
'We accept this invitation and welcome the opportunity to represent our country on this prestigious international stage,' the statement read.
'This decision has renewed our confidence in Creative Australia and in the integrity of its selection process.
'It offers a sense of resolution and allows us to move forward with optimism and hope after a period of significant personal and collective hardship.'
Mr Sabsabi and Mr Dagostino said that they extended their 'deepest and heartfelt thanks' to their supporters.
South Australian Green Senator Sarah Hanson-Young welcomed the artists' reinstatement and called for the board to be held further accountable.
'The reinstatement of artist Khaled Sabsabi and curator Michael Dagostino as Australia's artistic team for the Venice Biennale is a win for freedom of artistic expression but it highlights just how much of a farce this whole situation has been,' Ms Hanson-Young said.
'It is clear that the leadership of Creative Australia needs a clean out in order to rebuild trust within the artistic community and the Australian public.'

In an emotional and vulnerable post on social media, the three-time Olympic gold medal winner shared the three powerful words that kept her alive when she 'wanted to end it all'. On Wednesday, Jones posted two photos, the first of her sitting on stairs with her tear-stained face in her hand, the second was of her in an elevator after an hour-long walk along the beach. 'Stay until tomorrow', she wrote, was one of her favourite sayings. 'Yesterday was one of my worst days and I wanted to end it all. I think I have been battling high functioning depression for a little while now and have just gone back to work with a psych. In the dark moments I promise myself to just stay until tomorrow and it's amazing what the next day can bring.' She revealed that just 24 hours later she had a far better day. 'Today was spectacular. I had some free time after work and went on an hour long walk along the beach. No goals. No plans. Just enjoy the sunshine and the view. I was really missing my walking buddy @iammeagennay but walking by myself was enough. It changed my whole perspective on things. 'So if life has felt like a kick in the c..t lately, promise me you'll stay until tomorrow.' Jones' candid words have been praised by Lifeline Australia, which commented on her post to say that her revelation could help many others struggling with depression. Two-time Australian Olympian Genevieve Gregson has welcomed her second child into the world after a 'wild' pregnancy. The star Aussie marathoner, who is married to fellow Olympic runner Ryan Gregson, shared intimate photos of the first few moments of her second son's life on Thursday morning. 'And just like that, he arrived,' she wrote. 'Meet Alfred 'Freddy' James Gregson, born July 2nd, 2025. 'Welcome to the world little guy. We are all just so obsessed with you. 'A beautiful and wild experience that I will be sure to never forget.' Freddy becomes the younger brother of Archer, who was born in June, 2022. Gregson's post was flooded with messages of congratulations from friends and fans in the running community. Jess Stenson, who ran alongside Gregson in the 2024 Paris Olympic marathon, was among the first. 'So precious! Hanging out to give you a big cuddle little Freddy,' Stenson wrote. American middle-distance runner Emma Coburn added: 'Welcome to the world, Freddy!!! You have the best parents and brother.' Gregson's friend, Jake Shaw, said made mention of the cute name. 'Yes. Congratulations guys!! Love the name by the way,' he said. Gregson, who turns 36 next month, fell pregnant shortly after the Paris Olympics last year, where she finished 24th in the marathon, in a time of 2:29:56. Stenson finished 13th in a time of 2:26:45.
