After a journey spanning more than half a century, the UAE has returned to make its remarkable presence felt in the heart of Japan, launching its distinguished participation in Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai, following its initial participation in 1970.
Under the theme 'Earth to Ether', the UAE national pavilion opened its doors today to tell the world the story of a nation that transcended the limits of dreams and transformed them into a lived reality. It's an inspiring narrative of deep-rooted cultural origins intertwined with lofty space ambitions, a profound commitment to sustainability, and future-oriented healthcare.
The UAE pavilion pulsates with a unique sensory experience, taking visitors on a journey through three captivating stations, where Emirati and global success stories are embodied, and the path of brilliant Emirati talents and international scientists who have left their mark in vital sectors is illuminated. From space explorers to healthcare pioneers and sustainability stewards, these leaders draw inspiration from their rich heritage to serve the future and make a real difference.
Inside the pavilion, Nawal Al Hosany, the Permanent Representative of the UAE to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), shines alongside environmental innovation pioneers, including Yousif Bin Saeed Al Lootah, Executive Director of SS Lootah Group and Chairman of Lootah Biofuels, and Maryam Al Mazrouei, a renewable energy engineer at Masdar. The pavilion celebrates global pioneers in artificial intelligence and hybrid energy, such as the innovative duo Hayk Vasilyan, Maryam Ahmed Hassani, Co-Founders of Hydro Wind Energy, as well as Martin Takáč and Samuel Horváth, machine learning scientists and professors at Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence.
The pavilion highlights the UAE's role in developing leading medical solutions through influential figures such as Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, Executive Director of the Abu Dhabi Bone Marrow Transplant Programme at the Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Centre Ali Al Loghani, founder of the "Doctor Robot" project, and Dr. Habiba Al Safar, Professor and Dean of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Khalifa University, alongside international researchers in bioengineering and biology.
Emirati astronaut Dr. Sultan Al Neyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs, stands out, surrounded by ambitious young Emirati leaders in the astronomy and space sector, including Mohsen Al Awadhi, Director of Space Missions at the UAE Space Agency, Nora Al Matrooshi, Emirati astronaut - UAE Astronaut Programme at the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre, and Moza Al Maalla, a doctoral student in astronomy and astrophysics at Harvard University. This station provides pavilion visitors the opportunity to explore the success stories of these dreamers who have soared with their nation's hopes towards the stars.

Students from the Hamdan Centre for Giftedness and Innovation, part of the Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation for Medical and Educational Sciences, have concluded their participation in the Pre-University Program at Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge, achieving outstanding results and receiving certificates of excellence across multiple fields of academic research. The program, held from 27 July to 9 August 2025, brought together more than 250 students from 15 countries, reflecting the ability of Emirati students to excel in prestigious international academic environments. Dr. Mariam Al Ghawi, Director of Hamdan Centre for Giftedness and Innovation, said: 'We are proud of the exceptional performance of our students, which reaffirms their ability to innovate and excel in the most distinguished global academic settings. These achievements are the result of a clear vision and an integrated strategy for nurturing talent and refining research and scientific skills. Their outstanding participation at a renowned institution like Cambridge reflects the high quality of academic preparation we provide, their ability to engage in advanced scientific discussions, and their capacity to present research characterized by depth and innovation. We believe that investing in young minds is an investment in the nation's future, and that these talents will be capable of leading research and scientific projects that contribute to the UAE's progress and strengthen its global standing in science and technology.' Student Humaid Al Hooli was named Best Overall Student across all program cohorts for his work in the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering course. His extensive research focused on the Chernobyl disaster, covering its historical background, technical causes, and environmental and human impacts, while highlighting its role in reshaping global nuclear safety regulations and contributing to the development of safer operational systems for nuclear power plants. Student Khalid Al Emadi secured first place in the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering course with research on advanced applications of artificial intelligence in the aviation sector, focusing on real-time aircraft data analysis for early fault detection, enhancing predictive maintenance procedures, and improving air traffic monitoring systems to raise safety standards and reduce accidents. Student Hanadi Darwish earned first place in Physics with a comprehensive research project on antimatter, exploring the theoretical foundations of its formation, possibilities for industrial-scale production in high-energy laboratories, associated technical challenges in storage and utilization, and potential future applications in energy and medicine. Student Sayed Mansour Al Hashemi participated in the Cybersecurity and Computer Science course, presenting an analytical study on password security. His research provided an in-depth review of common hacking techniques and vulnerabilities in traditional authentication systems, proposing innovative solutions such as multi-factor authentication and advanced encryption methods to strengthen data protection against increasing digital threats. This achievement aligns with the Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation's vision to support talented students and prepare them to compete globally, reaffirming the UAE's position as a leading hub for fostering creativity and innovation. The Centre continues to enhance its academic and training programs to expand opportunities for participation in international scientific events, empowering students to lead pioneering projects that contribute to building a knowledge-based future. Advancing polar research through the Emirates Polar Programme The agreement establishes a framework for joint scientific projects, focusing especially on polar research in alignment with the UAE's Emirates Polar Programme. This programme aims to establish dedicated research labs in both the Arctic and Antarctica, positioning the UAE as a key contributor to global polar studies. Through this MoU, both nations aim to foster the exchange of expertise and launch collaborative initiatives in areas of mutual scientific interest. Strengthening the UAE's scientific role Dr Al Mandous stated that the MoU strengthens the UAE's research capabilities in meteorology and climate sciences. He emphasised the UAE's commitment to international cooperation guided by mutual benefit, noting that this partnership will advance understanding of climate change and support the development of innovative environmental solutions. The agreement also offers expanded opportunities for scientists from both countries to collaborate and conduct joint research. Integrating space weather services and AI capabilities A significant element of the MoU includes the integration of FMI's advanced space weather services into joint research efforts. This is expected to enhance AI-driven data analysis and operational forecasting capabilities, with practical applications across sectors such as agriculture, aviation, maritime navigation, and disaster risk management. Establishing joint infrastructure and research exchange During the visit, the Emirati delegation held a series of technical meetings with Finnish counterparts to explore the development of joint infrastructure and researcher exchange programmes. These discussions also addressed the setup of Emirates Research Labs in polar regions and strategies for conducting long-term field research to assess the impact of climate change on ecosystems and societies. Addressing global meteorological reform and funding In addition, Dr Al Mandous took the opportunity to highlight the importance of reforming operational frameworks within the World Meteorological Organization to better meet global needs. He stressed the urgency of ensuring sustainable funding for UN meteorological initiatives, especially amid current financial challenges that could hinder essential programmes. Finnish perspective on the partnership Professor Taalas welcomed the partnership, praising the UAE's growing leadership in scientific research related to weather and climate. He noted that the agreement provides a strong foundation for joint projects in polar and space weather research, ultimately strengthening global forecasting capabilities and climate resilience. A shared commitment to scientific innovation and sustainability This MoU not only reinforces the long-standing ties between the UAE and Finland but also reflects a shared commitment to sustainability, scientific innovation, and collaborative efforts to address global environmental challenges.
