Unity Ministry Seeks RM250 Mln Under Budget 2026 For Five Initiatives
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The National Unity Ministry (KPN) is seeking a RM250 million allocation under Budget 2026 to implement five initiatives aimed at strengthening community harmony and empowering communities. Its minister, Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said the Unity and National Identity initiative involves an allocation of RM100 million to implement the Flagship Kembara Perpaduan programme to strengthen the nation-building agenda. 'The Community Harmony and Well-being initiative, with an allocation of RM100 million, aims for a more progressive Neighbourhood Watch Areas (KRT) by revitalising the Voluntary Patrol Scheme, empowering Community Mediators, and implementing the MADANI Harmony Initiative. "Under the 'Ini Warisan Kita' (This is Our Heritage) initiative, an allocation of RM10 million is for the acquisition of historical materials and national heritage treasures to be preserved and inherited by future generations, while the 'Transformasi Pendigitalan' (Digitalisation Transformation) initiative, with an allocation of RM20 million, is for the digitalisation of national heritage treasures including museums, archives, and libraries to make them more accessible to the public," he said in his speech during the ministry's Budget 2026 dialogue session here today. He said that the fifth initiative, Conducive Unity Premises, with an allocation of RM20 million, aims to improve the facilities and amenities of agencies under the KPN for the well-being of the people. "Last year, the allocation we requested was RM290 million, but we only received RM90 million. For next year, we are requesting RM250 million, and we hope it will be considered because there are many more activities we want to carry out," he said. In a similar development, Aaron also hopes that the Finance Ministry and the Inland Revenue Board will consider providing tax exemption incentives to companies that contribute directly to unity programmes or activities at the community level. "We know that in Malaysia, there are many large companies that can help us provide funds for activities, but these companies, no matter how much money they give, will claim tax relief under social responsibility," he also said. Today's dialogue session involved government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), KRT, associations, and students from institutions of higher learning (IPTs) to discuss needs, suggestions, and priorities related to the Budget 2026.

Carbon tax aligns with climate policy and carbon market, says Amir Hamzah
KUALA LUMPUR: The carbon tax set for 2026 will be streamlined with climate policy and the national carbon market, says Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizah. 'The implementation framework will align with climate change and carbon market policies,' he said during his 13th Malaysia Plan winding up on Monday (Aug 18). 'It will also account for fossil fuel subsidy rationalisation, which has begun,' he added. Amir Hamzah said the government plans to introduce the carbon tax next year as part of its net‑zero 2050 commitment. He added the tax will target high‑emission industries such as iron, steel and energy. 'The carbon tax supports industrial decarbonisation and protects exports from the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism,' he said. Amir Hamzah then said that the ministry is reviewing practices in Norway, the UK, Canada, South Korea, Japan, Singapore and Indonesia on carbon taxes and emissions trading schemes. He said over 36 countries already implement carbon taxes, and Malaysia announced plans during Budget 2025. Amir Hamzah then said that tourism will be supported under 13MP through a Special Tourism Investment Zone in key areas. 'Investors can optimise existing incentives to ensure efficiency and returns,' he said. Anwar said support includes STIZ, heritage conservation in the capital, and homestay empowerment during 13MP. He said foreign tourist spending reached RM102.2bil last year.

‘No country is safe with hatred': Anwar urges Malaysians to stay alert against attempts to stir division
CYBERJAYA, Aug 18 — Malaysians have been reminded to remain vigilant and not fall prey to attempts by certain quarters to exploit sensitive issues with the aim of undermining national unity, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, stressed that every issue in the country must be addressed responsibly, as Malaysia is a nation governed by clear laws. Citing the Jalur Gemilang issue as an example, he said the government would not protect anyone found guilty of misconduct and that appropriate action would be taken against them. 'This is a nation of laws, with its own rules. That is why I established the Ministry of National Unity, because I believe political stability is essential for the country. 'A nation must be taught, and must learn from the experiences of others. No country in the world can remain safe when racial or religious hatred is allowed to grow,' he said during the 'Temu Anwar@Multimedia University (MMU)' programme here yesterday. — Bernama
