'Best pub in London' that was once owned by Madonna and Guy Ritchie
London, with its impressive collection of over 3,500 pubs, offers a diverse range of watering holes from traditional taverns to themed hotspots scattered across the city. These establishments vary from well-known chains to hidden treasures and even some celebrity-owned venues.
Some of these pubs boast a rich history dating back centuries, with a few of the oldest believed to have first opened their doors in the 1500s.
Recently, one pub has been crowned the cream of the crop. The Punch Bowl, nestled in Mayfair, clinched the title of 'best destination pub' in the Muddy Stilettos 2025 London Awards.
This historic pub, believed to have been established around 1750, gained fame in the 2000s when it featured in the documentary I'm Going to Tell You a Secret, which chronicled Madonna's life in 2004 and captured her and then-husband Guy Ritchie enjoying an evening at the pub.
Fast forward to March 2008, and the couple, along with nightclub mogul Piers Adam, bought the pub for a reported £2.5 million. Following their divorce in November 2008, Madonna's shares in the pub were transferred to Ritchie/
In 2013, Ritchie sold the pub to Alexander Langlands Pearse, owner of Cirrus Inns, which operates numerous pubs nationwide, reports the Express.
During its golden era under A-list ownership, the pub was a favourite haunt for the wealthy and famous. Notable patrons included Prince William and Prince Harry, David Beckham, Leonardo DiCaprio, Justin Timberlake, and Jude Law.
Visitors to the pub, since the change in ownership, have left rave reviews on TripAdvisor, with one writing: "Very cozy, old school pub. The service team and bar team dressed and fit the character of the property.
"The fire was much needed after the windy walk and the Mulled wine was great. Food looked good but we only went for drinks during our afternoon stroll. A must see for out of town visitors."
Another added: "A superb dining experience! Great service and excellent meal. The staff were all friendly and efficient - we were made to feel very welcome and special...menu suggestions were spot on and thoroughly enjoyed! Will definitely be back soon!!"
While a third penned: "So impressed by the amazing team at The Punchbowl. The food was fantastic and I have never seen a Head Chef walk casually around ensuring everyone is enjoying their meal.
"It was also a great indication how well run the kitchen is to enable her to do this. Thank you Mira! The service, the ambience, the bar - all top tier! We had a fab night and felt well and truly spoilt! Thank you Punchbowl team!"
A fourth visitor said: "Amazing date venue with a really good ambiance and amazing staff! We were served by Jess and Anabelle who were lovely! And what a Great wine list!"

BBC MasterChef fans demand contestant is 'disqualified' after major error
MasterChef viewers were left fuming after a contestant made a huge error during a taste test with judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode - and they demanded he be disqualified BBC audiences called for a contestant's immediate removal from MasterChef following a catastrophic error during judging. The remaining six contenders - Naomi, Martin, Joy, Michael, Reuben and Victoria - faced the challenge of impressing Gregg Wallace and John Torode with their "basic to brilliant" creations. Contestants were instructed to transform everyday home cooking into something "extraordinary". IT project manager Reuben chose to present traditional beef and pork mince meatballs alongside handmade pappardelle pasta in tomato sauce. Catastrophe unfolded when Gregg sliced into the meatballs, revealing they remained completely raw inside, reports the Express. Despite compliments for his pasta and sauce, the judges didn't mince their words about the glaring issue. Gregg declared: "Big issue with the meatballs," whilst John stated: "I cannot ignore the fact that you've got meatballs that aren't cooked all the way through." A dejected Reuben confessed: "I'm feeling deflated. After all, they weren't cooked all the way through, so I can forgive them for not wanting to eat them." Viewers immediately flooded social media, demanding his elimination for the dangerous mistake. One viewer said: "Undercooked meatballs should be instant disqualification." Another questioned sarcastically: "Were they cooked with a blowtorch?" A third declared angrily: "Sorry, but that's a major schoolboy error at the stage he should absolutely be disqualified. Shame." This will be the last series for Gregg Wallace and John Torode, with both the BBC stars being axed. Gregg was axed from the show after law firm Lewis Silkin upheld 45 out of 85 complaints against Wallace of inappropriate behaviour. While the 60-year-old has admitted using inappropriate language at times, he denies the more serious allegations. John did not have his contract renewed with Banijay UK - who make MasterChef - after he was alleged to have used racist language amid an investigation into his former co-star's behaviour. He claimed he had no memory of making the comment and denies it ever happened. The BBC came under fire for their decision to air this new series featuring both Gregg and John. They issued a statement, which read:"After careful consideration and consultation with the contestants, we have decided to broadcast the amateur series of MasterChef on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 6 August. MasterChef is an amazing competition which is life-changing for the amateur chefs taking part. The focus of it has always been their skill and their journey. "This has not been an easy decision in the circumstances and we appreciate not everyone will agree with it. In showing the series, which was filmed last year, it in no way diminishes our view of the seriousness of the upheld findings against both presenters. We have been very clear on the standards of behaviour that we expect of those who work at the BBC or on shows made for the BBC."

Dakota Johnson reveals she's 'weird friends' with Madonna... six years after Ellen DeGeneres clash
Dakota Johnson revealed that she has secretly been friends with Madonna since childhood, after a photo of them went viral last month. Madonna posted a shot of herself and Dakota with Dave Chappelle, plus the singer's manager Guy Oseary, at a birthday party for Tom Cruise 's agent Maha Dhakil. Fans went into meltdown over the connection between the Materialists actress and the Queen of Pop - which Dakota has now explained. She shared that their bond dates back to 1996 when Madonna starred in Evita with Antonio Banderas, who was then married to Dakota's mother Melanie Griffith. 'I really love her,' said the 35-year-old Fifty Shades of Grey actress, while speaking to E! News. 'We've been like weird friends for awhile.' She described Madonna as having 'an energy to be near that is so beautiful and so wild. It's just like cool that she even wants to talk to me.' Dakota explained: 'I met her when I was really young because she did a movie with my stepfather, and then I got to know her later 'cause we were gonna work together on something and we've always kind of circled each other.' Although Melanie and Antonio split up in 2014, Dakota has maintained warm ties to him and revealed a few years ago that she still refers to him as 'Papi.' Recently Dakota, whose father is Miami Vice star Don Johnson and whose maternal grandmother is Hitchcock blonde Tippi Hedren, gave her view of the sort of person she would prefer not to have as a colleague. 'I can't waste time on toxic sets anymore, or in situations that are not fun or fulfilling or healthy,' she told Variety, elaborating that she had no desire to work with 'anybody who's mean or condescending or unkind.' She added: 'We all know what a toxic set is by now. We're artists, so there's room for expansive personalities, and we're working with emotions.' Dakota clarified: 'I love a healthy argument on a set, and I also believe that the most excellent idea wins. It's not a fight. It's not a race. It's a collaboration.' The remarks came six years after her awkward on-air clash with Ellen DeGeneres, whose long-running daytime talk show ended in 2022 amid a torrent of allegations that she had presided over a 'toxic' work environment. In 2019, Ellen had Dakota on her show and pointedly accused the young actress of not having invited her to her 30th birthday party. Although Melanie and Antonio split up in 2014, Dakota has maintained warm ties to him and revealed that she still refers to him as 'Papi'; Antonio and Dakota pictured 2019 'Actually no, that's not the truth, Ellen. You were invited,' said Dakota, in a moment that became a lasting viral meme online. 'Last time I was on the show last year, you gave me a bunch of s*** about not inviting you, but I didn't even know you wanted to be invited. I didn't even know you liked me!' Ellen then backpedaled, asking a crew member: 'I was invited? Why didn't I go? Oh yeah, I had a thing. It was probably in Malibu. That's too far for me to go ― I think I do remember I was invited. But I really didn't remember that until just now.' It later emerged that Ellen was unavailable the night of Dakota's party because she was with George W. Bush attending a Dallas Cowboys game. After Ellen's show ended in 2022 in a maelstrom of controversy about the backstage treatment of staff, she largely withdrew from the spotlight. She and her wife Portia de Rossi led a mainly private life in Montecito, and have since decamped to England, settling in the Cotswolds. Last year she staged a comeback, going on tour with an act called Ellen's Last which was filmed as the Netflix special For Your Approval. While promoting her tour, she addressed the scandal that had overshadowed her career, saying she was 'kicked out of show business' for being 'mean.' She recalled: 'The hate went on for a long time and I would try to avoid looking at the news. The "be kind" girl wasn't kind. That was the headline,' via Rolling Stone. Sarcastically saying there are 'no mean people in show business,' she noted: 'I became this one-dimensional character who gave stuff away and danced up steps.' Ellen joked: 'Do you know how hard it is to dance up steps? Would a mean person dance up steps? Had I ended my show by saying: "Go f*** yourself," people would've been pleasantly surprised.' She confessed she 'didn't know how to be a boss' and pointed out she learned to practice her profession at 'Charlie's Chuckle Hut' rather than at business school. 'The show was called Ellen and everybody was wearing T-shirts that said "Ellen" and there were buildings on the Warner Brothers lot that said Ellen, but I don't know that that meant I should be in charge,' she observed. Madonna's own behind-the-scenes behavior has been subject to criticism by no less than her fellow pop star Cher, who has described her as 'rude' and a 'b****.' 'It seems to me,' Cher told Steve Kmetko on CBS in the 1990s: 'when you reach the kind of acclaim that she's reached, and you can do whatever you want to do, you should be a little bit more magnanimous and a little bit less of a c***.'
